OT - Rick Snyder for Michigan

Submitted by Flying Dutchman on
#10 in triple-alum Rick Snyder's plan is 'Bring "Winning" Back To Michigan.' This works on so many levels. I'm sure it was worded exactly this way for a reason. Somebody needs to make a t-shirt out of this.

On some rare occasions, a human being is able to make a joke or an observation about someone in a political situation without intending to stir up political debate. It is possible, and it has just happened.

Maybe Coach Rod is overdue for his own website highlighting his own 10 pt plan for bringing Winning Back To Michigan. 1) Barwis for Michigan - Tate shows up with a 20lb flak jacket made of pure Barwisian Muscle. Organic. 2) Spaceballs for Michigan - by September, they figure out how to have Denard with the ball and a one-on-one with any defender in the country. See ya! 3) Redshirts for Michigan - Devin Gardner decides that "2014 Heisman Trophy Winner" has a certain ring to it. I'm tired, so 4-10 are up for grabs. Humor me, Blue Faithful.

and yes, from my end, none of this was intended to be political. While you might use the powers of deduction to determine my own political leanings, I simply thought the caption of 'bring winning back to Michigan' was too good not to share...here.

That could be the most awesome campaign ad ever. It blends arrogance with Snyder's undying love for MI. It's like Dos Equis meets Apple meets political campaign ads. Not gonna lie, I would vote for that man for president tomorrow. I also love that last shot in the ad when he does his sign off "for a better MI" or something and that pseudo-random woman (presumably his wife) just turns her head and smiles at the camera from out of nowhere.

That is a good comercial, I don't care about the politics of it, it was serious yet humorous. The guy poked fun at himself but it was cool. I must admit I did think it was pretty original.

Wasn't mentioned in the commercial, but he was also chairman of the Ann Arbor SPARK program, which focused on economic development. Snyder is a saavy businessman and has experience in economic development. He has no experience in politics which, ironically, makes him perfect for the job.

His new ads are just as ridiculous - there's two on the site, they're having a voting contest to pick the next one. All three of them feel like they wouldn't be out of place as Saturday Night Live fake commercials. Honestly, I think this kind of campaign is a brilliant move. He's simultaneously catered to nerd culture (without coming off as pandering or insulting), appealed to youth voters with his sense of humor, shown off his credentials and success, and painted himself as a maverick/outsider that can bring some change to Lansing. It also gives him a gimmick for name recognition, which he definitely needs starting this late. I'm disappointed that his 10-point plan isn't as detailed as the commercial implied, but that could be because I'm used to engineering documents and academic papers.

1. His campaign is going to have a very difficult time winning the Republican party, much less the general election. His policy positions appeal to economic conservatives and certain younger voters, particularly college students (to an extent) and more recent graduates. However, he has not made any strives to show himself as a social conservative, meaning that winning over the Republican base in the state will be extremely difficult. Furthermore, his roots lie in southeastern Michigan, while the base of the Republican party in the state lies in the western half of the state. As he has not been a major player in state politics, he will have difficulty making inroads there. 2. His 10-point plan is actually fairly detailed when you read the PDFs that he has for each subheading. It isn't at the level of detail as an engineering report, but it still is more detailed than the vast majority of plans put forth by political campaigns. For the record, I'm not trying to state an opinion on the merits of Snyder's policy positions. I'm just saying that I don't think he has much of a chance to win. And yes, I know this is a major grey area with regards to the no-politics rules. Actually, this probably crosses the line, but what the hell, I spent enough time writing it that I might as well post it.

He doesn't have much of a chance to win? Umm, he just won the last straw poll at the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference. So right now he is technically the favorite to win the Republican gubernatorial bid. Just statin' facts, no opinion or bias here.

I go to MGoBlog to read about sports, not politics. From the random posters I hope for at best some insight and humor. But not politics! From OT threads I hope for at least some sophomoric entertainment, but this is less than sophomoric. I want to vote for this guy because he has clever ads! or I want to vote for this guy because he went to Michigan. These guys went to Michigan also. Alireza Jafarzeda Ted Kaczynski Richard Loeb Dr. Harvey Crippen John Delorean Herman Webster Mudget I am not saying Rick Snyder is a serial murderer, terrorist, etc. I am saying that it is stupid to vote for somebody because they went to Michigan. It is even stupider to vote for somebody because they can afford clever ad strategies. In the post "Citizens United" world we live in where unlimited corporate money can be spent on political ads, expect the slickness level of ads to skyrocket. I have no opinion about Rick Snyder but if you are interested you should ask yourself what does somebody have to sign up for to win a Republican or Democratic primary. One thing for sure, you have to suck up to the base, which is either far right or far left. If you are a straight non-political outsider wh1o is bringing a business approach to government, yet you are not running as an independent, you probably have sucked up to all the interest groups, but left your commitments out of your 10 point plan. Maybe you support the party, maybe you just like the ads, hopefully you will make your research more in line for a 400 level class than intro to poli sci. And even better - NO FUCKING POLITICS on MGoBlog

Actually, the only point of this thread was to indicate that his ads are clever and funny, and discuss the same. Your inability to grasp and partake in that is a reflection of your intellectual capacity, not everyone else's. If you can't see that this entire thread is at most quite satirical, and at least outright nonsense for the sake of nonsense, then you need to look at it with new eyes.

So Blazefire, you are responsible for the intent of this thread? So the eeeeh-Barwisian OMGshirtless gushing about this outsider he live in a2 he grew a business he has 10 points in the comments is only about the ad? Yes clever and funny, and somehow does not mention his endorsement from Pro-Life Michigan etc. So you might like the add, but this thread had definitely devolved into something else. I say, keep the fucking politics off of Mgoblog.
