OT - Richt pays staffers, apparently a minor violation
http://espn.go.com/colleges/georgia/football/story/_/id/7372776/georgia…
apparently richt thought that his assistants weren't being paid enough so he gave them money from his own pocket. that violates the ncaa's not at all well-reasoned no supplemental pay rule, so he was admonished.

Good by Richt, giving his own cash to keep his assistants and pay them what he felt they deserved. A violation sure, but he is a good coach and doesn't deserve the "grief" he gets from UGA fans every year.

While the principle underlying his gifts should be applauded, the prudence of such is extremely questionable.
Assuming he didn't know it was a violation, a bit negligent not to ask compliance... assuming he did know, christmas is a time for giving generous non cash gifts to assistant coaches, completely unrelated to job performance.

According to the AJC report, Georgia did not consider any of the payments to violate NCAA rules at the time because they were made with knowledge of the athletics administration.
Admittedly he might have told the AD without it ever going to compliance, but it doesn't look like this is entirely on Richt.

I actually thought it was pretty cool of him to do what he did. Apparently he informed the University that he was doing it. I know he broke a few rules but it seems like a very nice gesture.

Another example of why Richt is one of the good guys left in the game. I understand why they have the rule, but still. Kind of silly.

Richt also refuses to oversign, and he and his wife adopted two orphans from Russia (one of whom has a developmental disorder). He seems like a downright decent guy.
Georgia just became my favorite SEC team.

One of his first two games next year and all of georgia will call for his firing. Dopes

I would like to see Richt win a National Championship (though not at Michigan's expense, of course) and show the rest of the SEC, as well as Georgia's own fan base, that it can be done the right way. The guy really is a class act.

the people down here in Ga. Through the first two weeks of the season they wanted his head on a stick. Some of the oddest most discouraging comments were "He's to nice" "He needs to stop suspending all his good players when they get in trouble". These people in SEC country don't care. Its definitely a win at all cost mentality and a guy that tries to do it the right way run a good program and had the results he does is a " Shitty coach" in their eyes.

Great story! That's the kind of guy you want in your foxhole. Nice to hear something good about college coaches.

they were passing $ on to recruits and this is a cover up? The NCAA can't allow this.
