Georgia needs someone respected and experienced, who knows the southeast for recruiting and playing against those tough teams. The best available option is Mark Richt.

(This was what someone said after the Eagles fired Andy Reid.)

Seriously, anyone who can win 10 games regularly is just has bad luck to not win 12 once in a while. There's no magic about winning it all vs. almost doing so, except that they're competing against Saban in a brutal division. But Georgia's not getting Saban.

IMO, Georgia made a huge mistake.  Richt, by all accounts, is a class guy, runs a relatively clean program, and has done nothing but maintain a positive image of the UGA program and university - all while winning at a .750 clip.

The $$ arms race in college football has skewed priorities so badly. I hope UGA goes through the same dysfunction experienced by us, TN, NE. Greed and arrogance have a cost.

As for comparing UGA vs. USC (Trojans, not Gamecocks), I think the USC job wins hands-down. UGA is attractive, and Georgia is fertile recruiting territory, but SoCal has 20 million people, with an embarrassment of football talent.  For the most part, USC gets their choice. I'd rather recruit for USC than anyone, including 'bama.

Has anybody mentioned Dabo Swinney for UGA? I know he has Clemson in the thick of the national championship hunt but that will never be a premier job. UGA is as premier a job in the South as he could hope to get other than maybe Bama when Saban retires. Swinney played and coached at Bama so he obviously has deep SEC roots. I could see him bolting to Athens if he comes up short for the NC.

CNN is reporting that he's stepping down to take on other duties at UGA.  Maybe he's moving to assistant AD for a bit?  That would potentially keep him out of the U for this cycle.

Georgia is now the 2nd best job available behind USC. I think Richt was in that Lloyd Carr/Phil Fulmer position of being good but not good enough and after 15 years it was just time.

As far as candidates if USC and Georgia aren't making calls to Gary Patterson, Art Briles, Dabo, Dantonio, and David Shaw then they're dumb. Not that I think any of those coaches leave their current schools but those are the types of coaches you should go after first.

Wait to see if Chip gets fired. Jeff Fisher is a disaster waiting to happen. Dude has spent the past 25 years in the NFL and he's only been okay as a coach.
