Nice catch - didnt realize he went to the U.

He also was an OC at FSU for many years.  Makes a ton of sense.  Knows southern Fl and now has all the GA connections.  Go there, get your 10 wins a year at Miami and go to the ACC championship game 2 out of every 4 years and everyone is happy.

Virginia is just up the road - they should hire him today.  Miami should too.

I dont get why people want coaches to go to Maryland.  Eff this UA money.  Its not going to beat Harbaugh Meyer and Dantonio.  That's like going to the SEC West.  The MD job is going to be a career killer.  Your ceiling is Miss State at Maryland.

Go to the ACC Coastal, get your 10 wins at a school that would worship you for it and then have a 1 off vs FSU/Clemson in the championship game.

Well they are already paying London 2.4 million/year with a 3.1m buyout. UVA has the money to pay in 3m range easily. No clue on appetite but they have elite facilities for every sport and are already building or upgrading the football complex. Football is the only underperforming program to the school. They one the Capital one cup last year (for men's sports) despite football winning 2 games. Multiple natties in several sports plus elite bball. Pretty sure they'd like to be good at football again too. Not sure how Cuse, UCF, or MD are considered better jobs.

Maryland is an unpolished gem. Facilities aren't great but they are less than three hours from 20 million people in five states with no D1 football competition besides Temple and Rutgers.

If UA is really a big partner and it can help sell recruits on being cutting edge and other benefits, they may be able to get some of the guys from NJ, PA, MD, and Virginia that Michigan and PSU get now.

But that still doesn't change the fact that you're in a division with Dantonio, Harbaugh, and Meyer every single year. Plus the likelihood that Penn State figures out what they're doing again sometime. Even with UA money and recruiting the NJ/Tidewater regions better, you're still staring down a gauntlet each and every year.

The really great thing about Maryland is low expectations in a school that's underperforming it's improving fundamentals. Prior coaches had poor facilities, no student interest, and no money for anything. Now with UA + B1G money and viewers, those will be getting better, making it relatively easy to say "we're doing better than any other coach recently."

Will they be better than OSU? No. Could they be better than they've ever been, making a coach seem like a turnaround artist just for a quite achievable 8-4? Yes.

Has been waiting for this job for forever...and he was just getting impatient about to head to S. Carolina. This is a game changer...

He'll go to UGA, Richt to Miami...and the UGA defensive coordinator will go to Bama to replace Smart. Jeremy Pruitt is from Alabama, went to West Alabama and has coached at Bama in 3 different roles. Also coached at Hoover HS in Bama.

This couldn't be more obvious, IMO. All great fits too.

Honestly can't believe they did this this year.  He was supposed to get an extension and it fell through so I guess the writing was on the wall, but this is possibly the worst year for them to pull the trigger.  That being said, I could see RichRod in GA.  I think he would actually do well there.

As a UM grad living in Athens I can shed light on this matter. Can confirm. He's a definition Bible thumper. He holds a team prayer in the middle of the field after every game. Part of the reason he hasn't been canned sooner is because he has a reputation as a "good Christian man". Shocking day down here in Athens, but one that a lot of fans have clamored for. On the list of coaches that do the least with the most Richt is up there. Go back and look at his recruiting history before you say "not everyone can be OSU or Bama". He was a great fit and a great ambassador for the university, but he's never quite been able to be quite as successful as it seems he should have been (under performing/undisciplined players, embarrassing big game losses, lack of SEC champ game appearances, etc)

Interesting definition of "Bible Thumper"... If holding a prayer with players on the middle of the field - which a lot of coaches do - is the only criteria used to warrant such a negative connotation (that implies a person who forces their worldview upon others and stands in judgemental condemnation over those with different beliefs), that would be quite a stretch. It would be a little different if he actually forced his entire team to pray regardless of their religious beliefs, but inviting those players who share his beliefs - of which I'm sure are many in the south - to pray with him on the field (or anywhere for that matter) can be understood as one who is just exercising his faith. I guess I'm saying there needs to be more concrete information (than speculation) to justify such a harsh label on a self-professed Christian man.

and richt is a sincere Christian and a class act.  he is/was the only reason i ever rooted for georgia.  those fans will rue the day they fired him, not just because they are about to have a nebraska-style lesson, but also b/c i'd bet that georgia's fairly problem-free program is about to enter the twilight zone.

Exactly!  See how it worked for Tennessee after they canned Fulmer.  This is a horrible decision.  Because he hasn't won an SEC title in 11 years.  Most other SEC teams haven't either.  All of those titles belong to Bama, Fla, Lsu and Auburn.

What about Eason coming in as the #1 QB recruit?  He may go elsewhere now which adds to the horrificness of the firing.  Be careful what you wish for GA fan.

Athens. Many people on the blog who can see reality have referred to our situation as "Late Carr era-like" and I agree with that. I have been in Athens for 16 years and while, yes, winning seasons are winning seasons, the mediocrity has very much affected the games and overall feel here. Especially in the last 5-7 years. So, I get it. People are gonna think this is a crazy decision but I'm excited for the thought of something, anything new. Even if it sucks at first.

I wasn't necessarily referring to the team or standings with the word, more Richt and the general feeling in Athens. Here it's valued highly to win, a lot and with passion. Others looking in might not understand but Georgia could be elite and when that isn't happening, the natives are restless.
