OT - RGIII to the pros

Sweet. Convention wisdom says RG3 would fill the pro niche slightly better than Denard. We may know better, but we are not conventional wisdom. Hopefully this is just another reason Denard wants to return...

RG3 and Denard are not part of the same conversation and have nothing to do with each other in terms of pro prospects. RG3 is a consensus top 5 pick.

Plus the fact that any quarterback with that skillset that declares early is cutting in line in front of Denard. If X amount of teams want a quarterback this year, Denard moves down that list by one for every other junior that declares. I don't understand what part of that concept is hard to realize?

because Barkley pulled out. Prior to that he was going to be the third qb drafted and most likely would be pick 10-15.

Nothing left for him to prove in college. Baylor wasn't going to win a national championship and he has done everything he can at that program.
He strikes me as a smart kid, great head on his shoulders and tremendous accuracy. I suspect he is going to have a very impressive pro career. The other guy on that team that is going to be a great pro player to me is Kendall Wright. He is an absolute monster and has been horribly under appreciated nationally.

I think he should probably listen to the draft advisory board first. It certainly seems like a lot of players get pressure from their families to turn pro and get some money coming in, though.

.........to the OP, I remember some of the ESPN "experts" claiming they would take RGIII over Luck in the draft. Most of those who said so gave the Cam Newton situation in Carolina as their reasoning. Basically stating that unless a team has all the pieces to surround Luck, that taking a playmaker like RGIII instead would make more sense. As crazy as it sounds, their logic actually kinda makes sense.

They're not at all the same player. The only things they have in common are that they're black, fast, and awesome. The whole "compare every black QB to other black QBs" thing is really annoying.

..of player. Neither are RGIII and Luck. Luck, although somewhat mobile, is definitely more of the prototypical NFL qb while RGIII is closer to the Vick/Newton type.
RGIII is a much better passer than Newton and although not as good a runner, can extend plays to get his wr's open.
It really depends on what type of situation you are in as to what you would do. Take Luck, take RGIII, or parlay the #1 pick into an additional 1rst round pick for the next 3 to 4 years.

I think he's awesome.
My point is that Newton's success shouldn't have any impact on Griffin whatsoever, because the only real thing they have in common is "being black."

And I wasn't implying that you thought RGIII isn't any good. Still, RGIII and Newton have more similar skill sets than Luck and RGIII. And that is why those ESPN "experts" rationale KINDA makes sense.
IOW, I think RGIII could have more success than Luck could, earlier, with a weak offensive line. However, if Luck goes to a team with a decent to good O-line, I think Luck could be the better player, earlier.
And I don't think that either the Colts or the Rams end up with Luck. I think the Dolphins or the Redskins trade up to get him, and will give away 3-4 1rst round picks to do so. RGIII will probably go somewhere in the top ten, possibly top five. If the Colts end up with the #1 pick, they could, conceiveably, trade away that pick, get those 3-4 extra 1rst round picks, and still be in a position to get RGIII somewhere in the middle of the top ten picks. And that would be a great move by them if it happens.

I would think that another year at Baylor would be anti-climactic if you've won the Heisman, and therefore his potential positioning in the draft will never be better. If this is what he wants to do, then I wish him luck, but he seems like a sharp guy, so I assume he's thought it through carefully enough.

...my only concern with Griffin is that the Big 12 has more or less become flag football in the past few years. there are obvious sample size issues with what I'm about to say, but three Big 12 QBs were statistically (I'm using passer rating) the three worst regular passers in the NFL this year -- bradford, mccoy and blaine gabbert. and Josh Freeman, after taking the Yuccaneers to the playoffs last year, turned in a forgettable performance this season. (EDIT: they went 10-6 last year but missed the playoffs.) sure, i'm ignoring supporting cast and all that other stuff, but when was the last time there was a good pro QB who came out of the Big 12? i'm not saying Griffin can't or won't do it, but the learning curve will be steep when he jumps from the Big 12 to the NFL.

Good for him. His draft stock will never be higher. He seems like a really likable kid; I loved his Heisman acceptance speech.
