OT: Return of the Tuesday NCAAFB Open Thread

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on

College football on a Tuesday. Something about it just seems right. So it's some small school from the South 9 times out of 10. It's college football. It's fans of some small school estatic to have their team on ESPN with the big boys.

Tonights EPIC SUNBELT GRUDGE MATCH features the Troy Trojans from Troy (We're from Troy!) versus the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, a team that lost to Minnesota. Both teams are 2-2 overall (3-way tie for best overall record in their conference) and 1-0 in the SunBelt coming in.

Troy is best known for their passing attack, currently ranked 6th in total passing yards (318/game) on the season. They aren't an air raid team, but comparable to Indiana with about 55% passes. They'll work at a jet speed type pace for much of the game as well. They, like Michigan are all about the offense. Troy is 99th in points allowed (32.5/game) but in points scored, they're 66th in the nation (34.5/game).

Middle Tennesse is quite the opposite. Against a tougher schedule (including Okie State), they've run the ball about 45%. They currently rank 32nd in the nation in rushing yards at 195.8/game. MT is allowing just 23.8 points a game.

Kick off is about an hour away at 8ET on ESPN/ESPN3. The line is Middle Tennessee -3 or -3.5 depending the site. O/U is 63, 63.5, or 64.

I'm liking Troy in the "upset." Their offensive system normally can tear a team up, and their QB this year has been pretty good for SunBelt Standards. If anything, it's better than bickering over frivolous things that you'd be doing in other threads.

Who ya got?

Fuck Ohio State

Remember that MTSU didn't have their do-everything QB, Dwight Dasher, for that game, and they still only lost by 7 to the LOLphers.

As for my pick, since it's at MTSU, I'll take the Blue Raiders.

My fiancee just told me that one of the girls on Teen Mom is transferring to MTSU.  Because that show is on every fucking day, and thus on my TV every day making me hate life, I'll be cheering for Troy.

Since I'm unwaveringly lazy, I'll repost my comments from the other mention of that article.

Yeah, that's me.  That photo is from four years ago, but I still have the helmet, the beard, and the pasty white skin.

It's been a little while since the photo has popped up anywhere, but it was oddly popular among Spartans looking to mock the M fan base.  Somebody on RCMB posted about raiding a meth lab, and somebody else posted that photo with the query: "Two of the perpetrators?"  (Elsewhere in the thread, somebody decided I looked like the lead singer of the Spin Doctors.  That's actually pretty accurate.)

Does MTSU count for our SoS?  They're our opponents' (the eight B10 teams on our schedule) opponent's (Minnesota) opponent.

Big game, folks...

Can we make it a rule that you must have black as one of your actual school colors before you can have black jerseys.  And that if your primary color is blue, you can't have black jerseys.

I'm specifically looking at you, MTSU, Duke Basketball, and the Millen-era Lions.

So I'm a teacher, and it's Homecoming Spirit Week in my neck of the woods.  The spirit day tomorrow is "Little Kid Day" and the flyer says "Dress like you did in 1999", so I'll be rocking my replica Tom Brady Orange Bowl jersey.  I did kind of make me wish I could find a #3 jersey, however, to honor my favorite player from when I was in elementary school, two-time consensus All-America Tripp Welborne, the proto-Woodson.

My question for the open threaders is, who was your favorite Michigan player when you were growing up?

Navarre. Growing up in Texas, Michigan wasn't someone we got to see every week growing up. By the time I was in high school, that's when cable started to show more and more games. Navarre was blowing up the scene in the early 2000s. I only had vague memories of Woodson from junior high, and Desmond graduated when I was 6. I had nearly zero idea who he was at the time.

Tyrone Wheatley is completely inseparable in my mind from the beginning of my Michigan Football fandom (and thus sports fandom in general); as far as I can tell, I wandered past the TV one day in 3rd grade and thought, "that guy is totally awesome, and hey those other guys with him are cool too."

I hardly even believe it now, but for some reason Wheatley came to my tiny Lutheran school in Dearborn when I was in 4th grade (I guess it makes a little more sense now that I have learned from Wikipedia that he went to Robichaud HS down the road in Dearborn Heights?). It's a shame that cameras weren't as ubiquitous and pictures weren't as marginally cheap back in the day as they are now, because somebody could have preserved a picture of the most excited, most awkward-looking kid ever.

Chuck Winters came too.
