Because it's a sports team that is actually good this year. Glendening is a pest doing a fantastic job in a not so glamorous role. Datsyuk is playing like he's in his 20's again. The goose is loose. Let's beat the leafs.

Has to do with leaf being used as a pronoun. In a situation in which a pronoun becomes plural, a s is added. For example, babies and if someone had the last name baby. Their plural version of their last name would be babys
