Which team will win more games this season, the Wings or the Pistons?
OT: Red Wings v Blue Jackets (here's hoping the other night was a fluke) all purpose thread
The Pistons will screw around and win 30-35 games this year. The Red Wings are probably going to be a few games over .500, somewhere around 22-25 wins.
Given the sheer volume of lousy teams in the NBA, and there being more parity in general in the NHL, plus the shortened hockey season, plus the Wings are missing Lidstrom, Stuart, Kindl, Holmstrom, Helm, Hudler, and Bertuzzi from last year, I'm going with the Pistons winning more games.
I think you are overstating what the wings are missing... Kindl is day-to-day with a sore groin. Helm is day-to-day with a sore back (no damage shown on MRI last week). Bertuzzi's mono could prove an issue but that all depends on how long he may/may not be out. Hudlers was replaced by Samuelsson (pretty even statisticaly).
That being said I agree with your intial comment about lousy NBA teams being the reason the Pistons win more games. I see the wings winning something between 26-29 games and being the 6th-7th seed.
Bert's mono test came back negative and he is playing tonight on the third line. We also have Eaves back tonight for the first time in two seasons from concussion issues.
My outdoor hockey game tonight got cancelled due to a wind chill advisory of between -15 and -25 degrees. Bunch of wimps over here in Chicago, apparently!
Anyway, at least I can watch the whole game tonight. Go Wings!
This is this worst wings team in 20 years.
In their defense, that's not a hard feat to accomplish. Tonight we may find out just how bad this team is though.
good thing we've made the playoffs the last 21! #SoYoureSayingIHaveAChance
One game. At least give them a week. Not saying you are wrong but I will withhold conclusion for at least a week or so.
Pistons beat the Celtics last night! But as pointed out, this will mainly just hurt our draft positioning.
we flat out failed to skate on Saturday. we didn't have our legs under us, and we didn't put in that extra effort. its the same as last year.
honestly, as much as losing nick and stevie y has and will hurt this franchise, the most underrated retirement was losing drapes. dude was the wings best defensive center in his prime. he could win faceoffs and was the grittiest mofo ever. he would skate hard, win battles in the corners, finish every check, and do all of this against the opponents top line. and because this old dude was playing his ass off, all the kids followed his example.
helmer is the heir apparent, but the dude needs to stay healthy.
but its sad, cuz i just dont see the same effort out of abdelkader, mursak, emmerton, etc.
also, this team needs more gustav nyquist.
This team is a mess. Time to blow it up and rebuild for the future.
Money wasn't an issue. On top of Lidstroms and Holmstroms contracts ending we freed up $16 mil from Hudler leaving. We picked up 4 FAs with that same $16 mil, plus almost $30 mil in new contracts. We had plenty of cap room and prospects to trade for Nash last year. At least the majority of our contracts are 2 and 3 year deals so they have some flexibility in the future.
This team is not 6-0 bad.
Columbus vs. Detroit. Let's do this.
what are you drinking thread. whisky and diet for me.
Maybe a loss tonight will force them to bring up Goose and Tater-Tot. I can dream right?
Anyone have a stream?
first row. always first row.
I tried firstrow. I'm in England, which is probably why they aren't working. Oh well.
Oh good Gotham. Murph got him some new glasses... yeesh.
Was he blind or drunk when he picked those out? Good grief...
Not a very impressive fight.
What's the beef between Boll and Tootoo?
Soooo that's why we signed him?
This PP looks like shite.
We're doing our best Flint Generals impersonation.
Have we Wings fans been spoiled or what? Not pretty.
this PP didn't look too bad. Lots of chances.
Acceptable movement and maintenance of possession that time around.
i'll take 3 posts in a pp over 2 shots in a period (ala the first prd vs stl)
much better. one thing i noticed on previous pps was that our break out of our zone and into the opposing zone was piss poor. on this last pp, we were able to get the puck in the zone, possess it, and give our playmakers a chance to work their magic.
thats the curse of a puck possession team like the wings - when they don't have the puck, or even proper control of the puck, they can be abysmally bad.
Eaves back in the line up!
This Brunner kid looks real good.
Just weird not seeing number 5 out there.
I never thought I'd reach a point in my life when I would actually like Jordin Tootoo.
And I still don't.
I just hope that damn train whistle doesn't show up at The Joe. I hate that fucking thing, which is why I always hated Tootoo.
I've never actually rooted for a player from my own team to get his ass beat until tonight. I fucking loathe Jordin Tootoo.
I hate to say it but I think he's growing on me... until he starts getting really dumb penalties all the time.
Which will happen.
Ummm let's do something with this PP please?
Or just get a penalty.
PP #3 after the BJs tried to tackle Howard.
tough sequence for brunner. wish we'd had some more training camp to get him up to speed.
End of 1st tied at 0.
Now score some goals, Wings.
Should've swung a deal and gotten rid of a couple forwards. Didn't see the point of picking up Sammy and Tootoo when it just created a glut of forwards, most of whom are mediocre
For the the third year in a row. As soon as Parise and Suter signed elsewhere and Nik retired they should have changed course and began the rebuilding process. Time to dump the mediocre vets, play the kids and create cap space.
Instead Holland went the Joe D route which ensures a long and painfull period of not not competing but not quite rebuilding
Detroit goal!!! 1-0
Finally our first goal! And by Brian Lashoff?!
Raise your hand if you thought Brian Lashoff would have the first goal of the Red Wings season.
Very unlikely, but is there any chance the Wings offer sheet PK Subban?
I'd say highly unlikely but it'd be a good move. There isn't a deep or good UFA class this year. Our only other option is parting with young talent that we don't want to do via trade or signing an offer sheet. I can't think of another RFA of decent enough caliber.
Actually nevermind. I forgot about the picks you had to give up.
Good on Franzen for battling in front of the net on that goal.
Two veterans that excel at the PK. One of those things you don't see on every team.
What a stupid rule! Like people want to watch a 20 second tie up on a faceoff?
I can understand if a player takes his hand off his stick to move the puck, but to call it on what happened there seems like BS.
The intent was not there neither should the penalty.
White? 2-0 Wings!
White with Frazen with the assist.
Dammit, they score, 2-1 now.
Breakaway goal for them, 2-1 us.
Another defender gets beat.
It's not another defender. It's Quincey. Again.
No, I believe that was Smith.
The skater split the two of them. Seems like nothing good happens when Quincey is out there. But we'll be able to tell that from his plus/minus once we get a couple of games played.
I'm flipping between the wings and the ND-Georgetown game and I started wondering why Notre Dame, based in talent rich Indiana, isn't better and roping in any of that talent. I looked at their rivals page and they've had exactly one recruit from Indiana in since 2008. Do they not care?
To Hell with Notre Dame!
End of 2nd 2-1 Wings.
One thing Wings fans are going to learn to hate if they don't already are 3-point games. I find myself just rooting for someone to score in a game like NSH/STL tonight which was tied late. Don't want to see division or conference opponents rack up extra points.
That guy's granddaughter is hot as hell.
Hey, did you guys see the time-lapse transformation of the Joe from auto show to hockey rink?
Let's close this one out.
Argh, PPG them, 2-2.
That is why.
Refs should not want to be seen during the course of a game. Oh wait this is the NHL. Never mind.
Shocking. 2 games into the season and Coliacovo is injured. Scouting report on him was spot on. "Injury prone" is an understatement. Hopefully it's nothing serious.
Annnd it's panic time in Detroit.
FUCK! PPG them, 3-2.
And now Carlo's hurt, we are losing defensemen at an alarming rate, and now we're losing the game.
If you can't kill a power play don't take a penalty. Defense needs work
When the officials make it known early that they're going to let them play, you don't see any of the diving and nonsense that has been prevalent in this game. Wish they'd just let these guys play hockey and put the whistles away.
Another penalty?! WTF!
Looked like a check on a guy who had just played the puck. That's not interference.
Great fucking play by Z. And nice vision by Kronner as well to find Pav.
Must take the game to OT at least, need to get a point out of this.
Screw that, just win in regulation.
Man Pav, Z and Brunner looks like it will be dangerous as long as its together this year
Just put the puck on net!!!
A point each.
This team needs some work if they want to make a playoff run.
defense needs a serious upgrade. like serious upgrade.
our second line needs to get its shit together. and we need helmer back. deperately.
Could've signed Redden but passed. Management doesn't think it's a dire situation. Waiting patiently for the right move.
Understatement of the year?
I think people underestimate how big of a difference Helm makes.
I don't. Team really misses him when he gets hurt. Hope he's back soon.
Lets end this in OT. Shootouts are much less enjoyable to watch (and harder to win) without Bertuzzi.
Wow. That might be a no-goal.
No goal, I hope.
Hate that clanging sound when you're shooting. Best friend when you're in net, though.
The posts have not been our friends tonight
Understatement of the day.
They've been our enemies
Three saves by Howard!
Bertuzzi and hudler were shootout regulars last year... maybe missing them tonight (though I remember Hudler kind of sucking)
I was going to say that Hudler is definitely not a loss on shootout front. Never liked him in the regular shootout lineup. Bert is big though.
What a deke by Brunner, welcome to the show son!
That was simply disgusting!
Nice move. Red Wings win.
Brunner == breakfast + lunch + dinner all in one!
Lets hope he can start doing it in regulation
HOMESTAR BRUNNER, you're my boy!
They needed this win. In response to OP, I am not sure this shows that opening night was a fluke, but these are the games the Wings need to win to make the playoffs.
is just really good
is crazy good. Not 6 goal favorties over us in my opion, I think just some rust coming off plus missing 3 of our better players in Burt, Helm and Ericsson. I was surprised by the loss but wasnt really panicking.
was not a fluke, but not because of the Red Wings. Its because the Blues really have gotten a lot better over the last few years and this year they seem to have some of the pieces finally fall into place. I live in St Louis and I've noticed some of their acquisitions lately and they're doing things right...they're building a very solid team around Oshie and Co.
