OT- Red Wings trade for Kyle Quincey
3 team trade. Downie to Colorado, Quincey to Detroit, prospect Sebastien Pische and our 2012 1st round pick to Tampa. I was displeased when we let him go for nothing a few years ago. I think Holland moves one of our dmen before the deadline now (Stuart, Ericsson, Commodore, or Kindl), for a top 9 forward. Thoughts on the move? Also, kinda cool to see Holland making a deal with Stevie Y.

It'd be cooler if Hollard made a deal for Stevie Y.

Good ole Ker Hollard

Yes, I seem to be on a role with those today.

I'd be very surprised in Stuart was moved. He's a key part of the push for the Cup this season.
Ericsson has a NTC, and there's no chance in hell they move Kindl. He's a solid defensive prospect for a position that is getting pretty old.
Commodore is worthless in a trade. He'll be the one to bite the dust if we ever want to call up another forward, but for now we'll carry 13 F and 8 D.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:37 PM ^
He's been playing great since the finals in '09, and has gotten better every year, it seems. Everytime I get a chance to actually watch a Wings game, he definitely looks the second best defenseman on the team to me.
February 21st, 2012 at 6:07 PM ^
I was so pissed off when he got cheapshotted by that guy from Calgary last year. He was having a great season before then. Was a little slow after the injury but still played well. In reference to the trade, nothing will really come from a Commodore trade unfortunately and a Stuart trade would probably bring the most value but I doubt they move him. He is really valuable back there and losing him would lose more toughness and physicality on D which is presumably what they wanted when they got Quincy. Unless they have a trade lined up to lock up a difference maker on the offensive end I doubt a significant trade will really happen.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:55 PM ^
Stuie's staying here for now. Holland came out a few weeks back and said he feels they'd have a better shot at winning a cup with him in the line up. (smiles and points to the heavens)
I'd like to see Ericsson get moved, but, unfortunately, that's not possible with the NTC. I think it was a bad deal in the first place, but we're stuck with him now. Arguably the most over-paid 3rd line D in the league? Maybe. 2nd on the team in turnovers (37) and he struggles with his one-on-one coverage.
Would love another Stuart-type, plz
February 21st, 2012 at 7:27 PM ^
If you look at the other deals involving defensemen during this most recent offseason, Ericsson was actually somewhat of a bargain. Brendan Smith plays with the kind of grit Stuart does, and with much more offensive upside. Still hope we can re-sign Stuie, though. (For the record, I think he will ultimately decide that he would rather stay in D than hit the FA market. Only way I see him going anywhere is if the Sharks go after him.)
February 21st, 2012 at 8:11 PM ^
I hope your right All Aboard. But I think he's gone. I think being closer to his family is ultimately make him go. Obviously they aren't moving to the D, and I think that he's tired of being gone.

a few weeks back that this might be Stuarts last year here because his family still lives in San Jose? or some where in California?
February 21st, 2012 at 6:49 PM ^
Yeah, he has a step daughter that is in high school in San Jose.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:23 PM ^
No one on the roster will be traded away now (on defense), but because he is a restricted free agent, he provides insurance in case Lidstrom retires and Brad Stuart signs with a team on the west coast (his family didn't move with him when he was moved to Detroit). Great depth move by Holland.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:25 PM ^
Stuarts not moving anywhere. Kindle has promise. Ericsson on the other hand just hasnt lived up to his promising rookie season. Still, unless they can get some good value from Ericsson they might stand put.

Now I'd like to see us flip Kindl and another player (Hudler?) for someone like Grabovski.

February 21st, 2012 at 6:56 PM ^
see the point in hanging on to Kindl and Quincey (who's our youngest D now other than Kindl I believe). Commodore has no trade value and any worthwhile forward will take more than just Kindl. That said, I wouldn't be surprised or upset to see them hang onto him. I personally like Kindl a lot, but I wouldn't mind seeing him moved to add another scoring threat.
February 21st, 2012 at 7:07 PM ^
Well, Lidstrom could retire, and Stuart could go west to be with his family, so there might be some point in hanging onto D-men.
February 21st, 2012 at 7:31 PM ^
Dude. we have more than enough scoring, and have a bevy of very solid forward prospects in Nyquist, Pulkkinen, Jarnkrok, et al. The only legitimate defensive prospect that could be NHL ready in the next two years is B. Smith. Moving Kindl would be moronic.
February 21st, 2012 at 8:04 PM ^
One word. Depth. You look at the other cup winning teams and they all had depth. Plus it appears that the wings have more confidence in Kindl then Commodore. Kindl has play 46 games and Commodore has played 17. If you think there going to pay to get a top 6 guy, think again. Asking prices are way to high. The only way that happens is if Illitch says win this one at all costs, otherwise Holland isn't dumb enough to get into anything like the Nash sweepstakes. If they do anything, it'll be for the bottom 6 like a Travis Moen type guy. I just don't see them getting rid of a roster player. Especially with this team clicking the way it has lately.

I love the energy he plays with, but he is just plain too stupid to wear the winged wheel. Did you see that game Sunday where he dropped the gloves with 5 minutes left up 2 goals? It fired up San Jose and they almost tied it near the end. You don't fight up 2 late, it's hockey 101.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:30 PM ^
Having a solid depth defensemen, though, is not a bad trade off. I wonder what Holland offered for Kubina, because I would have rather seen him in Motown (especially since the price was a 2nd and 5th round pick). At the end of the day; however, it is hard not to just trust in Holland given how good he is at his job.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:34 PM ^
Is that the draft class is pretty thin. The pick isn't that big of a deal at all, especially with all the young talent Detroit's got in the system.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:31 PM ^
Even if they plan to keep him around, Quincey's not worth a 1st rounder, especially with this year's draft, which is especially deep. Couldn't they have talked Tampa into a 2nd + another prospect?
This might go down as a bigger mistake than the Robert Lang trade.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:32 PM ^
Kindl is not going anywhere. He started the season of strong got hit with an injury and hasn't been able to bounce back. He is a young prospect with a lot of promise in an area of need for the Wings.
Stuart might not be back next season and I believe it will be Lid's last as well, as painful as that is to think. So we need all the young DMen we can get.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:32 PM ^
Well, I guess the mock draft that had the Wings taking PDG at the end of the 1st round are bunk now.
But I think it's a solid trade overall. Quincey is solid and if he does well, he might get offered a contract at the end of the season.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:39 PM ^
A recent mock draft had Detroit draft PDG, there goes almost any chance of him coming to Detroit, good luck to the kid where ever he lands now.

Datsyuk will be out for two weeks after knee surgery and Conklin cleared waivers and is going to GR.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:55 PM ^
Wow, I had no idea about Datsyuk. At least it was just arthroscopic, it happened now, and he's out 2-3 wks, so will be back for the end of the season and the playoffs.
February 21st, 2012 at 6:15 PM ^
The Datsyuk thing was apparently an old chip of some sort they wanted to clear up before the playoffs. Not major, but also not something they want limiting him or getting worse in the playoffs.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:43 PM ^
It's one of those interesting trades that seem neither good nor bad until long after the trade is made. Time will tell.
February 21st, 2012 at 5:56 PM ^
Detroit's been hinting for a while that they needed another d-man, and this is going to go a long way towards solidifying that 5-6 pairing. Still, this sets Detroit up for a very interesting set of offseason decisions. 4 guys are more-or-less locks for next year:
-Kronwall ($3MM)
-White ($2.875MM)
-Kindl ($0.883MM)
-Ericsson ($3.25MM)
So they will need to add or retain 3 guys out of a group that will include Stuart and Lidstrom (depending on what they decide to do) plus Quincey and Brendan Smith, plus any big name free agents on the market (Ryan Suter?).
That sure looks to me like Stuart made his intentions to head west after the season known. It should also be noted that even though Quincey is an RFA after this season, if he's not part of the plan, I would think his rights are worth at least a 3rd rounder at the draft. That's a steep price to pay for a sort term rental, but not as bad as trading a 1st for a guy who is going to walk.
February 21st, 2012 at 6:00 PM ^
Chelios currently leaving 200 voicemails for Holland saying he's not busy this time of year /just sayin'
In all seriousness though, I could see him as an assistant in the future. Guy isn't capable of staying away from the game. Gongshow props.

February 21st, 2012 at 6:19 PM ^
Well, he spent more time with the Griffins than with the Wings. I presume more PT with the Kings and Avs has improved his game. I'm going to give Holland the benefit of the doubt.
February 21st, 2012 at 6:16 PM ^
This year is a weak draft, so a guy like Quincey who we can easily re-sign is pretty good value for the 30th overall pick the in the draft.
February 21st, 2012 at 6:30 PM ^
Who told you it was a weak draft?

February 21st, 2012 at 8:32 PM ^
I've heard that numerous times as well. They even just said that on the Wings telecast a minute ago.
February 21st, 2012 at 6:57 PM ^
I really don't know how I feel about this trade. I think Quincy adds a level of physical play and shores up the 3rd/4th D pairing. That being said I'm not so sure he is worth a 1st rounder.
I'll be okay with this if Detroit decides to add another big body up front for a good price.
With everything being said, I think this team is stronger THIS YEAR and will have a better shot at a Cup with the addition of Quincy.
February 21st, 2012 at 7:04 PM ^
This seems like a move made for next season, all indications have been that Stuart wants to play on the west coast to be around his family in the 12-13' season. I like the move for now, we'll see if they stop here or make another move.
February 21st, 2012 at 7:41 PM ^
I would mind seeing Ericsson traded. He's one of the only guys on the roster that I wouldn't really miss if he was not on it anymore. I think he's pretty inconsistent at times and takes stupid penalties. He also has zero contributing capabilities on offense-which I know is not his first responsiblity as a defenseman. However, I think we just wouldn't be very hurt if we let Big Foot, as I call him, go.
