OT: Red Wings Sign Nyquist

Submitted by Fhshockey112002 on

In what is shaping up as a great off season the Red Wings have reached a 2-year deal with Gustav Nyquist. The deal is for $1.9 mil or $950k cap hit. This signing looks like a steal to me, and I think this kid has a break out season in 2013-14.

UPDATE: The #RedWings have agreed to a two-year deal with Gustav Nyquist.

I know we are close to the season but thought this wasn't crazy off topic.

Edit: I know it's the Freep but only news outlet with an article so far.

That's a great deal, to be getting him for under a million. He reminded me a lot of Datsyuk with the puck during the playoffs last year.

Too bad they couldn't sign Brunner, but he asked for too much from the Wings (and apparently everyone else so far)

Unfortunately, compliance buyouts that impact this upcoming season's cap number had to be announced by July 1st.  Now, any compliance buyout will apply towards the following season.  Thus, the only way to bring the Wings under the cap is to make a trade/salary dump, or put some waivers-free players in the minors -- namely Dekeyser and Nyquist.  I don't like the latter option, but the former requires other teams to be interested in Sammy, Bert, or most likely, Tootoo.

Wow, that's a great deal for the Wings IMO.  Nyquist looked very good in the playoffs against the Blackhawks.  Still has a great deal to learn but solid potential there.

is now seemingly part of the core. But if the Wings had a healthy Darren Helm last year, I'm thinking they skate past the Blackhawks into the Cup round. Now, it appears Helm and Samuelson could both be gone or unavailable and that cap compliance means some other veterans will be forced off the roster. The Nyquist news is great, but to compete for the Cup again will take some additional roster manipulation to keep the energy level and forward defense strong especially on special teams. That's where they missed Helm.
