OT: Red Wings playoff streak officially over

Submitted by Lionsfan on

With a 4-1 loss to the Hurricanes tonight, and the Leafs and Bruins both winning, for the first time since 1990, the Detroit Red Wings will not be playing postseason hockey

Detroit's streak of 25 consecutive trips to the #StanleyCup Playoffs has officially ended; it ties the 3rd-longest such run in NHL history.

Most Consecutive Appearances in #StanleyCup Playoffs:
29: BOS, 67/68–95/96
28: CHI, 69/70–96/97
25: STL, 79/80–03/05 and DET, 90/91–15/16

While I wish we could have broken Boston's 29 year record, this was a good streak. Unlike the Blues and Blackhawks during their streak, we actually won the Stanley Cup, and unlike the Bruins, we did it over multiple decades of our streak

it has been a great run with stanley cup wins. Now its time to shake things up, starting with the front office, head coach and roster. I will always be a wings fan through good and bad times.

Head coach can wait. We won't contend until we truly rebuild, which will take a few years. Blashill has done just about what you'd expect given the roster. He did a good job developing the kids in Grand Rapids so I'm fine with giving him a couple more as we bring along more youngsters

While it is sad to see the streak end, it's nice to see that Holland finally recognized some things had to change and traded some guys away at the deadline. Will probably have to do the same next year, which is fine

And at least in our playoff streaks, we won Cups unlike Chicago and the Blues during their long streaks

End of an Age - Hockey at its best.

Gotta clean house managment on down - NHL too.

Watched the 20 year Wings Colorado brawl videos with my son, he commented that sports aren't like that any more.

NHL has gotten so wimpy - like soccer on ice.

Goodell has to go, another 10% ratings drop this year. "Taunting" penalties. We went from Probert to "Taunting" penalties?

NFL is going down same road. Too many rules, too many penalties, too long.

I used to watch the Wings every other game - I haven't watched a single game this year.

I so badly want to slide tackle you, my friend.  Just so you could experience first hand how "wimpy" soccer is.

And I'm a big Wings fan, and don't particularly like what Gary Bettman has done to the game.  I'm with you there.  But still, I'd love to catch you on a clean slide, watch you become one with the turf, and ask you whether soccer is a soft game.

Knew that it was going to end at some point time to rebuild and fire Ken Holland and trade for Stevie Y and fire the head coach. Redwings need to clean house in front office.

It was a hell of a run making it to the playoffs 25 years in a row even know for the couple of years that the Redwings wasn't going to make it out of the 1ST round of the NHL playoffs.

As crazy as it sounds the streak didn't have to end this year but Holland's mismanagement of the salary cap over the past few years made this season's mess inevitable. Too many bad contracts in the organization and too much reluctance to play the younger players. Passing on Jacob Chychrun was the last straw for me. Kenny was the master in the non cap era but the Red Wings need new blood in the front office. It's time to bring Stevie Y home.

isn't coming "home". Just like Stamkos wasn't leaving Tampa for another team. He has everything he needs here and has built his own legacy with another team. He is only a piece or two and a couple of injuries away from a cup in Tampa.

Holland's former Number 2 has assembled some solid young talent together in Dallas despite the Stars not making the playoffs with Seguin and Benn together (Lindy Ruff isn't meant to coach in the Central.) Nill would probably be willing to come back and has a history of good trades.

Ken Holland said 'we are not that far from making the playoffs' (his only goal at this point) and (in his opinion) it would take 10-15 year for a rebuild...so not going there - he just needs to retool, something he has no idea how to do or the Cap space to do it.

I'm a diehard Wings fan, but this was a pretty annoying benchmark for management to hold on to. The Detroit Red Wings should settle for better than the 16th best team in the league.

The Maple Leafs game winning goal (that knocked them from the playoffs) was scored by former Michigan star Zach Hyman. Flip side of that, Dylan Larkin has been bed shittingly bad during this "sophomore slump" of his. I hope he rebounds and along with Athanisiou and some of the other youngsters help to start a new playoff streak for the Wings.

It's a more impressive streak than the others thanks not only to the Cups, but also the fact that a good chunk of it came during the salary cap era.

That could have happened to this franchise. Getting into the playoffs as a 7 or 8 seed has done them nothing for the positive. They've won what, 3 or 4 total playoff series since 2009? They haven't been to the conference finals since then.

This streak was really hiding the fact the team needs a rebuild from the top to the bottom. Contracts, the sudden horrible scouting, a GM that hasn't made a worthwile trade since Brad Stuart, the team needs to be blown up. Just like the Pistons.

Curse that 3-1 lead we blew against the Blackhawks...it's one of my toughest sports memories from games I've attended - that game 7 overtime loss at United Center.

Also on the list:

  • 2006 @OSU football
  • 2011 Frozen Four championship
  • 2013 Final Four championship
  • 2016 @OSU football.

As others have said, the biggest problem with this team right now is the pile of terrible contracts and the lack of star power.  Beyond Z, only the young guys are exciting to watch.  They will develop but it's going to take time, in part because of terrible contracts for Helm, Abby, Big E, Glendenning, Kronwall, Dekeyser, etc., which is a direct result of Holland doing a very poor job (other than drafting which has been above average).  Holland was good for a while but his management over the past say 4 years has been pretty terrible.

Mr I wanted to add Stevie to assistant to Holland, but Kenny inflated ego he said no. Steve Yzerman should be the Red Wings GM right now and we would not be in this s. Highest payroll in the NHL and the worst team?

I'm not a fan of Detroit, but this was one hell of a run. Similar to our bowl streak in college football up until 08.
