but how much does setting the record count given that shootout wins didn't exist back in the day. It is obviously still impressive, and a good sign if the Wings can get home ice in the playoffs.

Don't you use your fancy logic here, boy. This is the internet!
Hail.
Eh, they can only do what they can do, and it's still a hell of an accomplishment. It'd be different if Babcock ripped his shirt off and had one underneath that said, BEST HOME TEAM EVAR or something, but that isn't going to happen.

Shootouts are not the only thing that have changed in hockey since back in the day. Equipment, players skill, and rules have all changed. One could argue that the Wings streak is more impressive considering the overall skill level of the league is much higher. Go wings.
"Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is." -Vince Lombardi
Then why even call it a record? With anything in sports you can say it doesn't compare across eras. A shootout is more or less a coinflip to decide who gets an extra point.

I was saying that it would be just as impressive as the Flyers record in the 70s. I don't think the shootouts take anything away from potentially 20 straight home wins. Shootouts are hard to win and to win 3 of them during the streak only adds to it because of the unpredictable nature of them.
"Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is." -Vince Lombardi
But back in the day those would have been ties, and thus streak-ending. The Flyers didn't even have overtime to break the ties. They had to win it in regulation.
Whatcha gonna do, little brother?
You would be hard pressed to find a coach in the league who actually thought that winning shootouts meant you were a better team. At best it means you have a better set of 3-5 guys who can score on breakaways and a goalie who is lucky/good enough to stop them.

I see your point and tend to agree somewhat. However, the Flyers of '76 and Bruins of '29 or whatever year it was also probably weren't playing with their minor league goaltender in the last three games of their streaks. The fact that the Grand Rapids goalie won us the last 3 games makes it pretty impressive.

Nice to join you all for another Wings potential record tying match.
Am I naive for thinking that if true nobility still exists, Nick Lidstrom is one of its practitioners? Sometimes it strikes me that I could be.
Comrades - you don't care a damn about it, do you?
He's got an umlaut. That's royalty baby.

Some of the changes in the lockout were good, I don't love this one. Is that reviewable? If not, it should be, since the play creates a stoppage anyway.

I dont think they should review plays like that. It was nearly impossible to see if it hit the glass on that play, and I don't want hockey to turn into football where every other play needs to be reviewed. I'd rather leave it in the refs hands on the ice, and if they screw it up then it gives me something to complain about.

I'd like to see it become reviewable. Over the course of an entire season, it might get reviewed five times per team, and it's a call that results in an immediate stoppage and a penalty. Most of the time there's not any question, but you could tell the officials lost sight of it, and a second look would be warranted.

Nick Lidstrom is now second all-time in games played for the Wings.

I love Joe Louis Arena... if they ever build a new arena for the wings they should take these boards with them. They give a 'home field advantage' most other rinks dont have.

Top shelf for Brayden Schenn. Joey Mac is going to have to play a little better for the Wings to pull this off tonight.

If we played them 6 times a year, I bet we'd come to hate the Flyers a lot. They're a bunch of headhunters out there.

I think Eastern teams tend to have more goons than Western teams. There are more long standing rivalries (Boston-Montreal, Pittsburgh-Philly, and even the 3 New York/Jersey teams) that are generally more physical than a regular game.

Flyers score a lot of goals and there's a reason Joey isn't a starting goaltender. I knew they were going to make it hard on us to tie the record. Hopefully we can step up and get this win.
