OT: The Red Wing's new Datsyuk?

Tomas Jurco was the top pick of the Red Wings in the NHL Draft, and his moves with the puck are reminiscent of the Pavel. His stick handling is absolutely off the charts, but it seems like he has to become a better overall player before coming into the NHL. I'm not an expert or anything, so if someone else has a better scouting report or when he'd start in the NHL, feel free to chime in.

Check out the breakaway goal in the first video. Beautiful.

If you watch any of his highlights on youtube his stick handling is truly amazing.  I beleive the wings saw he was going to be available in the 2nd round which is why they traded their 1st round pick.  Lastly, it is nice to see the wings picking up players that are not 5 foot 10.  Jurco is listed at 6 foot 2.  Not bad.

still there.

I've been reading everything I could on the draft and I think I saw one quote that there were still 6 similarly wanted players on their board. They felt confident that at least one of them would be left 11 picks later, but they were very happy they still got him at 35 instead of 24 and still got Oullet.

But yeah.

Amazing stick handling. The shootout goal were nice. More spectacular than that rookie's in the NHL this past year where he spun coming down the ice, jerked to the side, faked a shot then scored.

The Wings may have a new top prospect next year even if tatar and smith don't make it on the roster this year.

More to hockey than good hands but yeah, he will be a good player at the NHL level. I just needed to see him in the last few seconds forechecking until I really saw his size and speed. I hope to see him soon in GR.

I'd love another Datsyuk, but that is a pretty high bar for a young kid to meet.  At this point, some bigger guys up front and defensive depth would be huge.  Sounds like the Oullett is going to be a very good player as well.

Jurco is certainly an interesting pickup; it is truly difficult to rate his play over the last year due to the quality of the team and a bit of up and down in his game during the regular season. Jurco did certainly assert himself in the playoffs, however so that's a bonus. Preseason Jurco was getting a lot of attention as a potential top ten pick due to his otherworldly skills/hands to go along with quality speed and agility. The knock on him is that he is not truly consistent, takes games off and shies away from the sandpaper elements of the game. When he takes the beating he lingers on the outside, basically.

My sense is that he fell to the Wings at 35 because most NHL general managers are not comfortable using a first round pick on a player who plays on the outside and who plays inconsistently. The contrast here is that Jurco certainly does have an immense skill element to his game; ust not one convincing enough to NHL GM's to offset the effort/softness questions in the first round.

I like the kid's moxie a lot and that quote regarding Pavel Datsyuk is a classic: "He is a similar player to me".

I can't wait to see what this kid can bring to the table in a few years. Saying he's the next Datsyuk may be a stretch, but I think he'll be close. I see him becoming somewhere between a Filppula and a Datsyuk. He has good size and a ton of potential if he can become a good two-way forward

The kid clearly has great hands.  Has anyone seen a scouting report on him?  Dats is an amazing puck handler but what makes him so good is how great of a defensive forward he is.  If Ken Holland drafted him, he'll be good.  I don't question any move that man makes.

Datsyuk is a stretch at this point, since Dats is such a complete player.  Plenty of these kids have great hands, but its not just about what you do with them on a breakaway or a shootout, its how you use them to create space for yourself on the ice, something Datsyuk is unrivaled at.

As long as we are discussing the Wings' draft, apparently Ryan Sproul (the 3rd 2nd round pick) seriously considered Michigan before ending up in the Soo with the Greyhounds.

After attending the team's 2010 Prospect Orientation Camp in May and the main training camp in late August, he left the club early in September to consider his options.

"I was thinking of going to university," said Sproul, who'd been talking to the University of Michigan about playing for the Wolverines.

Sproul missed the Greyhounds exhibition season and first two games of the regular campaign.

But former Hounds general manager Dave Torrie, who'd offered Sproul a contract following the Prospect Camp, finally lured the Mississauga native to Sault Ste. Marie.
