So sloppy on the powerplays. Too bad Pavs and Z needed rest during the 5x3.

OT: Red Wings - Ducks Open Thread
Wings blew their PP opportunites, now have to kill off a 5-on-3.
Wow... makeup call time i guess. Horrible hooking call.
I can't believe that was called either (although it was a penalty).
Anaheim's special teams have certainly been better so far
I hate what they call hooking now..that second call was weak
Absolutely. That was just awful.
We fucking blew that period is my professional analysis.
Yeah, but at least it's still tied.
I guess, if we want to have a shred of positivity
or are there a pretty good amount of empty seats there tonight? I know it's the beginning of the period now, but I initially noticed that midway through the 1st
They are going to go with general admission seating...
Can anyone explain why NBC insists on using jokers like McGuire, Emerick, Olczyk, etc. when there are other options that are so much better? So happy to have Rick Peckham on this game tonight. Boston-Toronto has CBC's simulcast. Night and day difference from the AWFUL combination that they had for the Caps-Rangers game (Emerick, Olczyk, McGuire). Just call the damn game, stop the theatrics (it's a driiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive!), and the stupid personal interest stories during the game (no one gives a crap that two of the Islanders played for the Penguins last year, let alone that you need to tell us about it 8 times in two games). I don't know why, but the TSN and CBC crews just call the game, while the NBC crews try to make it a show. So annoying. Personally, I hate these "national" crews because they don't know crap about the teams (aside from the basic stuff that anyone knows) and repeat the same stuff game after game after game as if no one watched the previous games. It's such an uneducated broadcast and so annoying for fans that closely follow the teams. That said, Rick Peckham is the clear exception and I wish they would use him more, instead of continuing to put their awful trio on every "important" game. /rant. Sorry... Had to get that off of my chest, and I can't be the only one who this pisses off.
Clement, Clement, hands of cement?
I agree. I would also pay decent money to be able to watch the regional broadcasts throughout the entire playoffs (especially living out of market).
Or better yet, to get the CBC teams throughout.
I can do without Thorne, who seems to yell simply for the sake of yelling.
you are simply noticeing the difference between an American broadcast and a Canadian broadcast.
In America everything has to be exciting, in Canada they just call the damn game. Same thing happens with soccer announcers and its why having Gus Johnson call the next World Cup is the absolute worst decision ever made.
You're absolutely right, on all accounts.
Passing and puck handling seem kind of sloppy for the Wings. Either that, or they're really tired or banged up.
both defenders collapsed on the guy on the right and left a guy wide open on the backside. Howard saved us again
What!
WTF?!?!
Five minutes AND a miscounduct for checking?!
And of course they score right away.
I think we're in trouble. Barely clinging to a 0-0 tie the whole game and being outplayed the whole time. Hopefully Anaheim doesn't blow it open here
bullshit officiating all year long. Great job ruining a great playoff game, fuckwads. Tempted to just stop watching this bullshit league all together.
My sentiment exactly. There was absolutely nothing wrong with that hit.
it was a bad hit by Abs. I know the kid and pull for him despite some questionable decisions he makes. However, it was a dumb play by Abs. It was a textbook charge. Then Abs hit high towards the head. It will be 5 no matter which crew is officiating.
We'll have to agree to disagree.
West Coast Trash
Series!?
Take your red and white glasses off. It was a good call by the refs. I am pissed like you are being down 2-0 to the ducks. However, it is not the fault of Bettman or the Wings like we Wings fans love to blame for the Wings fault. The Wings are depleted on the blueline and with our more defensive minded forwards.
If you want to point the finger at someone, point it at Ken Holland. The lackluster free agent signings during the preseason and zero moves before the trade line led to this deficit of depth on the bench.
FUCK! They score right away.
Cocksucker refs.
Sorry, but it's true. Absolute joke.
Noooooo!
Pretty dumb post by me I see now. Hopefully I don't get sent to Bolivia for that.
But come on. That is the most ridiculous thing I've seen in hockey in a long time.
All of our shots are right into Hiller's gut. Make him work just a little bit, ok?
Someone explain to me why we are upset. Looked like abs left his feet and drove right into his head and shoulder at the same time. I think that's always been a penalty.
Maybe didn't deserve the boot
Didn't have a problem with the call but should have probably only been a 2 min minor. 5 and game is a bit much...
Because the ref that was 3 feet away didnt call the penalty...
But the national folks are saying he didn't call it because "he was so stunned" by how vicious it was that he was rendered him temporarily incapable of reaction.
The national folks are idiots.
head was not the initial point of conduct. And we are fucking upset because it wasn't being called penalty initially, and than all of sudden because Anaheim reacted to it it becomes a five minute major, fucking bullshit.
Those were years ago. Yes, the wings get jobbed a lot. The boot was over the top and if anything else results that will be unwarranted as well. I'm not familiar enough to state an opinion regarding 2 vs 5 minute, but I think that's a penalty, especially now. If you want to bitch about inconsistencies, fine, I am with everyone there. The camera angle that was head on with the guy who got hit too me was the best one showing the points of impact.
Yeah same here, maybe he wasn't "targeting" the head, but it was a blindside hit up high and he left his feet. That's gonna get called most of the time
his feet were on the ice and he slowed down before the hit.
This. It's called a DVR. Use it before you say something dumb.
There's no real great angle that I have, but to me it looks like right as he makes contact, his feet are in the air. I dunno if it deserved the game misconduct, but I don't think it's as clean a hit as some people are saying.
And if (when?) the NHL suspends him, that will be bush league considering what other teams have gotten away with, especially against the Red Wings
get new glasses. I am personal friend of tghe Abdelkader family. He left his feet when he hit. That is textbook charging to anyone with a brain. Going high did not help Abs case. It deserved 5 minutes.
edit: how the fuck is this trolling. Get some perspective people.
Agreeing with you
Because:
1) He didn't leave his feet until after contact was made.
2) Initial contact was to the shoulder.
3) It was only to the head because the player he hit lowered his head.
4) They didn't call it initially, but rather used the TV timeout to talk about it together (after quite a bit of whining by Boohoodreau, I'm certain).
that was a pretty solid kill (almost kill). Ducks didn't really have a good chance aside from that
Can't believe we had so many odd man rushes despite being shorthanded.
except for the first 18 seconds, that was awesome
I do love any chance to see the stache on Bill McCreary. Classic!
thanks for adding to the crappy rep we wings fans currently enjoy. You are making us look like black helicopter Penn State fans.
FSD replay shows Abdelkader stopped striding before the hit, so charging is wrong.
The national NBCSN people are saying at least a two-game suspension.
I don't even know if that's really a penalty and it might get turned into a 5 min major / game misconduct / 2 game suspension? Holy crap. Where did that come from?
This kind of bullshit is exactly why the NHL will always be a distant fourth in popularity. Incompetent refs don't do anything to stop the bullshit thug tactics of teams like the ducks, and an aggressive, hard but clean check gets a game misconduct. I wouldn't put it past the fucktards in charge to suspend abdelkater for another game.
You mean the same idiots that decided not to call a blatant over the glass penalty at the end of regulation against the Capitals? No way...
Fuck Bettman.
Disagree completely. That was not a penalty.
Followthrough makes it look bad, but it's the wrong angle for seeing whether it's head contact - another angle showed body.
Exactly. When they show the angle that looks straight at the end line it's absolutely clear that initial contact was to the body (front of left shoulder) and then carried through to the head.
Didn't target the head. But definitely left his feet. Not sure it's a major, but definitely a penalty
On his feet until contact and initial contact was to the shoulder. Terrible.
Not saying it justifies a major and game misconduct, but Abdelkader should have kept control of his body through the hit, that's why he ended up in the box. I do agree it shouldn't have been a penalty, and charging was quite obviously the wrong call since he didn't meet either criteria.
15 years ago that makes the NHL's season ending best hits video. Total crap.
2 years ago would have been clean. Now its a 5 minute major and game misconduct? Hockey has changed so much in the last 10 years i can barely recognize it anymore.
No kidding... Wings/ Avs that's an average hit!
Hearing Valteri's name reminded me that I heard his name pronounced 'Fil-pu-lu' on sportcenter the other day. That was a first which is impressive considering that his name is butchered constantly
might've been a penalty anyway, but running in place sure helped the cause
Seems like we can't do anything 5 on 4
come on man
GODAMMIT, SHG for them.
didn't think the powerplay could get any worse... ouch
Well at least we can say the Abdelkader penalty wasn't a game-change
...in hockey. Gotta stay positive
Can't wait for the Eastern conference next year. Can't stand playing these pricks.
?
Given how sad our offense and PP has looked all game, I'd say that's pretty close to icing the game
We've had tons of opps this game. Most upset with us more than anything else.
We look pathetic tonight
Fuck it.
Terrible fucking D there
FML.
That's all.
Why don't we wait to see the outcome of game 4 before we call it a series.
Maybe it's just me, but why was Lashoff called to replace the injured DeKeyser? White, and Colaiacovo seem like the better options, they at least have playoff experience.
"Good penalty killer, makes a good first pass, very competitive"
Tigers up 14-1
Yay!
Can they donate points to the wings?
GOOD LORD, cabrera 2 dingers 4/4 6 ribbis
At least they made the playoffs to keep the streak alive.
Been a stupid year anyways. Half of a season + no winter classic= fuck you Bettman
It's been a piss poor performance by the crowd as well. I think everyone was just happy to keep the playoff streak alive and now are focusing on the Tigers.
very bad game tonight. no effort on defense. no effort on offense. i sometimes question howards play
None of the goals tonight are on him, plus I think he's had only one bad game the past few weeks, in Calgary. If the Wings convert on any of their powerplays, especially in the first period, this may have been a different game.
Man, some people on here need to get some perspective. I know the Red Wings were a trendy pick to upset the Ducks, but c'mon, there's a reason they were a 2-seed and the Wings barely snuck into the playoffs.
The Wings were inconsistent all year on the blueline, had spotty forward play, and for the first half of the season our PP was borderline unwatchable. Exactly everything we saw tonight. Add on to the fact that the biggest reason we even made the playoffs (DeKeyser) is now out for 6 weeks, and yeah, we're gonna have an upward climb.
People around town somehow forgot the first 30 games of the season. It's a young team that does not have as much top notch talent as Anaheim. If Lidstrom and Stuart were still here, maybe this would be different, but they're not. That doesn't mention the free pass Ken Holland seems to get around town.
At least someone here has some decent perspective on this team. I love the wings as much as the next metro Detroiter, but come on people. This is a rebuilding year. To call a team that is a 7 seed rebuilding speaks to the quality of this franchise.
The Wings are do not have the depth on the blue line for a team composed of Cogs, Perry, Getzlaf and Teemu.
2 least favorite teams...Sharks and Ducks. Mainly because of their series against Detroit. Ugh, hate them. Go get them in Game 4.
It could be really bleak, and there's no telling how long it could last. Look at the two best teams in the league right now -- Chicago and Pittsburgh. What do they both have in common? They got good by being really terrible and getting high draft picks in multiple years. In Pittsburgh's case, they got really lucky in that they got two guys (Crosby and Malkin) who are once-a-decade type talents. But in the early to mid-oughts, both of those franchises were absolutely wretched.
There's no guarantee that high draft picks lead to future success. Just look at Columbus and Winnipeg/Atlanta. They have sucked forever.
they looked like the Wings of the first 30 games, which is almost exactly the time that DeKeyser showed up. His injury was massive for this teams chances.
Nothing like my fellow wings fans embarrasing themselves by blaming the refs. I am willing to bet none of you have played a second of hockey in your lives.
If you want someone to blame. Look at Ken Holland. He had the job of replacing Lidstrom and he did a terrible job. Especially when you look at it from the angle we depended on the recent WMU player Dekeyser to get us in the playoffs.
edit: How the fuck is this trolling? Wake up Wings fans. Not my fault I can see this situation without red and white glasses.
Suter and Weber. They chose Minnesota and Nashville. He offered great contracts to both of them.
I don't think Holland ever went after Weber, and Weber actually chose Philly, but Nashville matched the offer-sheet. Hence all the trade speculation around him
That's something I rarely say, and I definitely feel qualified to make that judgement, at the very least as much as anyone saying the referees were fine.
There's no reason anyone needs to have played to have an opinion on the game, and just makes the argument look weak. Look at softball, Patrick Murphy hasn't played an inning of softball in his life and won a national title last year.
Replacing Lidstrom was an impossible job. But if you ask me, Holland can be criticized for not getting more forward talent to work with in the free agent market the past couple of years. Holland has been sitting on a shitload of cap space lately for no discernable reason. Just to give you some perspective, you could swap out Dan Cleary or Valtteri Filppula for Alex Ovechkin or and still be under the cap.
the playoff streak in the offseason, so call me pleasantly surprised. I've been one of those guys that gives Ken Holland a pass, but not so much anymore. I kept expecting moves out of him coming up to deadline but he just shit the bed. Tootoo is what we got. Wow.
I hate to think of what it might mean, but I think the day is drawing near that the whole thing needs to be blown up and rebuilt.
It was a nice 20 year run but the reality is this team is in the rebuilding phase. I hope they have good scouts and coaches to get the team back to playing good hockey in a few more years. Only time will tell if they can complete the rebuilding process. All dynasty come to an end! I was too young to remember the glory years of the 50s. I was all excited when the Wings made the playoffs in '78 and we beat the Atlanta Flames. The wings were not that good back when I was a kid, the only thing we had was Reid Larson! but they slowly improved during the 80s.
