Let's go Buffalo!
landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
Let's go Buffalo!
Hope the Wings demoralize them early and take whatever life the 'Yotes have left.
Damn western conference.
winging it in motown and check out his realligning proposal
I hate being in the Western Conference. Guh...
Link to the website please?
EDIT: Found it
Well this is sucking so far. Unreal atmophere in the Bell Centre though
crowds for hockey and concerts.
Odds on Phoenix getting another 5-3 tonight?
Yes they do!
Pittsburgh the least classy team in the league (more so than Anaheim).
Kunits will be suspended and should be in my opinion for a long time. 5 games at least that was the most blatant elbow so far this year. Worst than Cooke's (pittsburgh).
Kunitz will probably 1-2. I thought the Downey hit was also pretty bad (and something he's done and been suspended for before). I wouldn't be surprised to see him get 2-3, though with Torres not getting suspended for his incident last night who knows.
WTF...How did Torres not get suspended. No matter what people think of the hit, it would've been so easy for the NHL to end anything like this in the playoffs before it begins...
Of course we should've known the NHL would screw this up somehow...
Yeah, the Downie one is a headscratcher. Not only should it be a suspension, but it should have been a major penalty. The fact that the on-ice officials blew the call would make me tend to believe that they are much more likely to suspend him.
I have Pitt in a bet to win the series, so I am in the uneasy position of pulling for the Pens and against Stevie Y
All three games have been good so far
No kdding. Odd feeling, isn't it?
thanks man for reminding me that for the second time in my life, ill have to deal with the demise of one of my teams.
Ugh. Anyone found a stream?
I know the last one of the Wings ones works. I'm not sure about the others.
Just sing it please.
good night trash dogs
Here We Go!
Can you say sweep?
let's win this one first.
Shouldn't it be joBBing.com? Otherwise it's jObe-ing, which makes no sense.
maybe the heat scrambled their brains
Maybe it should be renamed Gobias Industries Arena
That's Gobias as in "go buy us some coffee"
Blindside hit on Lidstrom!! Fuckers!
Howard's been sharp tonight.
The Versus announcers don't seem to be reacting to his saves that much, but there have been a few incredible ones
Ha! Doan for crosschecking!
MAN that guy is a wiener
Why in the hell is doan going after Lidstrom? Goon.
Seriously? Calling Doan a "goon"? Really?
Much of Doan's game is "goonish" despite the fact that he's a good player and leader. He's not a goon with no skill, but he certainly plays chippy and, in some instances, takes cheap shots.
Doan is a guy who loves the game and plays like it. If on the wings, you would love him.
but he's not on the wings, and my only experience watching him has been in the playoffs the last couple years, and he seems to like liberties after the whistle. So,I don't like him.
Step one in becoming a better educated and more objective hockey fan is watching games other than games that your team is playing in.
I watch plenty of NHL hockey. Sorry if I don't watch/give a shit about the Phoenix Coyotes. Sorry I don't meet your standards for an educated hockey fan.
I don't know if you are educated or not. All I can do is go by your comments, which sound decidedly uneducated. Sorry if that ruffles your feathers.
"I watch plenty of NHL hockey."
How much of that "plenty" consists of games that Detroit is not playing in?
None here. I'm not the one who got butthurt over an off hand comment about Shane Doan. And I do watch plenty of NHL hockey not involving the wings, Mr Hockey Elite.
"Butthurt"? Not so much. I just thought it was an uneducated comment to make. That's all.
"And I do watch plenty of NHL hockey not involving the wings,"
I bet you do...
"Mr Hockey Elite."
Thanks. I take that as a compliment.
It's not all that uneducated. Doan was suspended more games this year than the entire Detroit Red Wings team. A team which includes Todd Bertuzzi, former captain of the NHL goon squad.
First, the Bertuzzi comment isn't really relevant. For example, how many games has Bertuzzi been suspended during his entire NHL career for events not involving Steve Moore? Second, it's somewhat hard to really fault a player of Doan's tenure all that much in that situation. Doan is in his 16th NHL season and for the prior 15 seasons that suspension would have never happened. I'm not saying he didn't do anything wrong, but rather that in a case like that it's hard to change some habits. Heck, just think about how many games Scott Stevens would have been suspended if he were still playing. That said, those three games of suspension for Doan this year consist of his entire career total. Not exactly the mark of a "goon".
and you only watch your teams in sports than aren't football because at some point it just is too much.
Last year Howard went on all fours outside the crease to cover the puck. Doan could have crashed into him, but instead jumped over him, couldn't stop himself from crashing into the boards and got hurt. I'll give him credit for that.
He may not be a goon, but crosschecking Lidstrom after the whistle is goonish. He could go after someone closer to his size, at least.
At least it was old guy on old guy, I guess.
Yes, credit Doan for that. Also be aware that he clearly intended to knee Franzen into the boards last night when Franzen was down. So he avoids goalies but takes cheap shots at other players. He is not a good because he clearly has skill and plays the game hard (and yes, I am sure I would like him on my team) but he DOES take cheap shots on occassion (as does JovoCop).
Lots of wings fans there
Random question: Since Jimmy Howard played in the USNDTP, did he go to high school at Pioneer like many of the others do? I can't seem to find any info on the internet.
Yea he did, looks like he went for one year
A commercial completely in Spanish for the governments "Let's Move" campaign supposed to make kids not be fat?
Why are they playing a commercial in spanish during a HOCKEY GAME that is terrible marketing government.
Because the other team involved in this game is located (for now) in Phoenix?
A stream for those of us that don't understand that p2p thing.
Just be sure to NOT download the fake VLC player update they ask for. It's an add, probably not safe.
Here's some monkeys riding dogs herding goats instead
Niiiice. I gotta disagree with that penalty call though.
But the game is broadcast on Versus and Fox Sports Detroit. I guess I understand it in the Phoenix area, but why broadcast it in Spanish nationally?
I think the rational would be, right or wrong, that the vast majority of people who are not Red Wings fans or from Arizona could care less about this game and aren't watching, so the fact that it's a "national" broadcast isn't really relevant.
What does a player's ethnicity have to do with it?
Probably, but I still don't know what that has to do with the number of latino players...
I get that you're trying to make the "fan identification requires ethnic identification" argument. I think that's a stretch without much (or any) support in North American hockey, at least outside of Quebec.
I get your point, I just don't agree with it. I just don't understand watching a game or not watching a game based upon whether or not there are players who share my ethnicity. That just makes no sense to me...
The way I was looking at it, what percentage of the people watching this game, in Phoenix and across the nation, speak Spanish at all, or even as a second language, compared to those watching who speak it as their primary language. I'd bet there aren't too many people who speak Spanish watching the game regardless - its hockey not soccer
That's what I'm saying
I think he was just attempting to make a connection between anyone latino and hockey - whether being playing, coaching, or a fan - and he came up with one person.
not a lot of latino players = not a lot of latino fans = not a lot of latinos watching the game compared to white people
"not a lot of latino players = not a lot of latino fans = not a lot of latinos watching the game compared to white people"
You really think that latinos wouldn't watch hockey because there aren't many latinos playing in the game?
I just looked thru your comments in this thread and you seem to be the uneducated one...there is no way you can argue the statement that Doan is a dirty player
Care to elaborate on that? I mean, seriously, you're not going to find many people who would seriously argue that Shane Doan is a "goon" or a "dirty player". That's honestly one of the more bizarre statements to make. His career just doesn't bear it out. I mean, seriously, this is a guy who has been suspended three games in his entire NHL career and who who has only accrued more than 100 PIM in a season twice. Hell, he's only been over 75 PIM in a season four times. In a 16 year NHL career. That's hardly the mark of a "goon" or a "dirty player". But yeah, how could anyone argue that he's not a "goon" or a "dirty player". Silly me...
I get that youre trying to make the 'fan identification requires ethnic identification' argument. I think thats a stretch without much (or any) support in North American hockey, at least outside of Quebec.
I never said it "requires" ethnic identification. Sure, there may be some latinos watching, but literally it MIGHT be like 10% total.
You really think that latinos wouldnt watch hockey because there arent many latinos playing in the game?
I don't watch MLS soccer playoffs, do you?
"I never said..."
You do realize that I wasn't responding to you, right? That's why my comment came sequentially after someone else's comment, not your comment.
"I don't watch MLS soccer playoffs, do you?"
I don't watch the MLS period, but that has nothing to do with the ethnicity of the players. It does, however, have everything to do with the fact that I don't really like soccer.
I went to an MLS soccer game in Chicago - 90% of the people there were hispanic and the entire game was announced in Spanish, advertisments at the game were in Spanish, etc.
MLS attendance and fan-ship is widely the latino population.
On the contrary, hockey is a very 'white'/northern sport. It is naturally played in cold weather areas on ice, not found in most latino countries, so not many grow up fans.
You don't watch because you don't like it. Likely about 10-15% of latinos "like" hockey, thus maybe 10-15% of latinos might be watching this broadcast at this time. No one is talking about watching or not watching based on what race the player's are, but just the correlation between race and fan-ship by sport.
"No one is talking about watching or not watching based on what race the player's are, but just the correlation between race and fan-ship by sport."
You obviously missed the prior thread on this subject because quite a few people here argued just that.
"Likely about 10-15% of latinos "like" hockey, thus maybe 10-15% of latinos might be watching this broadcast at this time."
Do you have anything, at all, to back that up with?
I don't watch hockey to just watch people play a sport. Does anyone? If you do it for that reason why not watch curling? People watch a certain sport because they like that sport - but there is a correlation between fanship by sport and race
"but there is a correlation between fanship by sport and race"
Do you have anything, at all, to back that up with? I mean, seriously, I'd like to see some data on that.
has some of the best hands in the league.
Based on how few latinos I have seen, both as a hockey fan and player for my entire life, either playing or watching hockey. That number is very very low. I estimate that maybe 1-2 out of 10 would "like" hockey...I know a lot of latinos and literally 2 consider themselves hockey "fans"
Got it. So it's just your personal observation. If we're going the "personal observation" route, instead of the actual data route, I'll counter with this: when we were STHs in Tampa Bay we saw a lot of the demographic that you claim doesn't like hockey at the games. And by "a lot" I really do mean A LOT. I suppose my question for you would be: have you ever been to an NHL game in an area with a high population of that particular demographic?
Do you disagree that the number of soccer fans has a disproportionately large number of latino fans relative to the population? Or that hockey fans are disproportionally white? Other sports are more mixed in terms of fanship, like basketball and baseball...but hockey and soccer are definitely corelated with race in terms of fanship.
Correlation does not equal causation. You're jumping to the conclusion that latinos watch soccer because latinos play soccer and that latinos don't watch hockey because latinos don't play hockey. You don't have any evidence to support that conclusion.
that is all.
I agree..he is a bitch. Its been nice to see Helm give him a few shots this series.
I don't disagree that there are SOME latino hockey fans. Areas where there may be a large population of the aforementioned demographic and also have an NHL team in the city are all BIG cities with a LOT of people. A small percentage of a large sub-population in those areas would certainly lead to a strong support at the games in said city.
You do realize that the other team involved in this game is located (for now) in Phoenix, right? And that Phoenix has a large latino population (over 40%), right? Which might explain the reason for the commercials in spanish (which, after all, is what started this discussion)?
Also, for what it's worth, I'm sure that everyone else who is reading this thread and who doesn't care about what you and I are talking about would appreciate if you would reply to previous comments made instead of commenting like you are. It's not really fair to everyone else to have to wade through this conversation to find the posts about the game. In other words, use the "reply" button.
Another PPG for Phx.
they need to shore it up if they want any chance at going far this year.
That one was a lucky bounce off a player's hip.
just makes me nervous vs. the better teams.
That was a pure luck goal. Sometimes they go for ya sometimes against. It's the nature of hockey. Our pk was great on that with 3 clears and only 2 shots. Unfortunately one took a crazy bounce.
Definitely. They were just average during the regular season and the fact that the percentage so far in the playoffs is lower, especially against this team, is definitely an issue.
3 down and 1 to go.
3-0 series lead. Get a sweep, hopefully more time for Zetterberg to heal up.
AND the tigers are winning here in seattle!
in Winnipeg and sent them to Phoenix. Let's finish their tim in Phoenix and send them BACK to Winnipeg. How ironic.
I love my Wings!!!!!!!
That had to be one of the more poorly officiated games I have seen recently. The fact that the Wings completely outplayed PHO and yet somehow the officials decide that the Wings should be the more penalized team keeps the score at least close. How many PHO crosschecks and interference calls are going to go uncalled? That call on Abs was terrible (Jovo was holding his stick and it occurred right after Doan took a late run at Lids) and the call on Homer was terrible also. And yet no calls when the Wings are cross checked to the ice on scoring chances in front of the net. Terrible. And credit the Wings for winning it anyway. Should have been about 7-1 without the gifts.
Word on the street is that NHL, NBC, and Versus have reached a mega 10 year deal.
I keep missing the NHL on ABC but maybe it was watching all those Red Wings games on ABC as a kid, or Gary Thorne. Don't really have a problem with this.
Not just word on the street; it's confirmed. Ugh. As a person who thinks that the production that both NBC and Versus puts on, this is awful. Here's why: "Between them, NBC and Versus will telecast 100 exclusive regular-season games, nearly double this just-completed regular season total." Nothing like totally sticking it to the people who shell out money for CI who will now get less games on CI for, likely, even more money.
I hate it when the Wings aren't on FSD. Or CBC.
