OT - recording games, PVRs

Submitted by NOLA Blue on

I am looking at recording the games this year, and do not want to pay a monthly fee for a DVR (so no TiVo, etc.). My searches for in-line video recording brought no rewards, but I see that today's gamers are recording their action in real time (with ability to later edit and upload clips... to personal fans?  ...sheesh, I'm getting old.  I thought Super Mario 3 was pretty high-tech, what with shadows and all.) - I digress.

MGoBlog is the internet's leading source of legit hype videos.  Does anyone have experience recording games with these PVR mechanisms?  Specifically, any thoughts on the Hauppauge HD PVR 2 line-up vs Dazzle?  Thoughts on software comparisons would be great as well (Dazzle includes Pinnacle broadcasting software - is this marketing hype, or a worthwhile consideration?)

My apologies if this has been discussed before.

Generally, people get DVR's through their cableco or sattelite provider. A few even offer TiVO (for a fee). One advantage of TiVO is that you can get their free PC program that allows you to upload video from the TiVo to a PC wirelessly. You can then convert to AVI (or any other format) and view the game/ movie/ show on any device.

If you are OTA or don't want to use your TV provider, then I believe Hauppage has some solid products, but don't have experience using them.

Another thought is if you wait a few hours, doesn't somebody upload the full game to a torrent site?

Am looking to capture the video that is going to my screen - not interested in DVRs as I am more interested in recording very few events each year - 15 Michigan games and 15 LSU games. OK, and a few basketball games in there as well. All in all, the video editing options of the PVRs are more intriguing to me than the ability to record 12 channels simultaneously for $15/month.

Rip the .mp4's from each of the sites.

this -

"I am looking at recording the games this year, and do not want to pay a monthly fee for a DVR"

is not going to yield you a recording any better than what's available on those sites.

I'm Verizon FiOS, and I believe its more along the lines of $15 a month. Just felt there might be a better option to maximizing the value of the television stream I am paying for, including being able to watch games I miss while at the hospital. I don't need all the tuners that DVRs come with... not enough time to follow 12 shows simultaneously. And it's looking like these "capture cards" even come with editing software. When M goes undefeated this year, I'm going to mash up one hell of a video to commemorate it.

Channel Master DVR+ might be what you're looking for. It doesn't have all the features of a TiVo or other DVRs (Can't tell it to only record new episodes, so it'll end up recording duplicates).
