OT: Rece Davis Replacing Chris Fowler on Gameday

Submitted by Bando Calrissian on

Come this fall, @ESPN_ReceDavis will replace @cbfowler on @CollegeGameDay @espn #CollegeGameday

Felt like this was coming after Davis was center stage in the CFP Gameday-type coverage and Fowler took on calling games this season, but still kind of amazing that Fowler won't be at the desk this fall.

I always forgot Fowler's name and thought it was Rece Davis until Rece Davis appeared, and I sometimes referred to him as "the guy on Gameday who's not Rece Davis but I always confuse with Rece Davis." I know I like Fowler more because I like the Gameday guy more, and I know I miss Musburger over Fowler. Basically, I like how it used to be when I was in college. Man I'm really starting to sound like an old man.

I like the move. Rece is very passionate about college football and will do a phenomenal job, I'm sure. I hardly ever watch game day bc I am a big English premier league soccer fan, but when I do it still brings me back to when I first started watching the show in the mid 90's

When I was in the MMB, I subbed for a basketball band gig Musburger was covering. I was absentmindedly walking out across the floor to get to the other end and bumped straight into him.  I don't know if it was the caked screen makeup or what, but he pretty much looked like a corpse. At least ten years older than he looked on TV.

That was in 2004.

Fowler's probably the best college football announcer of his era, though I like him more as a color man, as he does a great job with data and facts.

If only we could somehow bring Keith Jackson back to call the games while Fowler fills in the details...

I have no complaints about Reece, like him a lot actually. That being said, I like Fowler more and will miss him on CGD. Chris Fowler hosting Gameday on Fall Saturday mornings is all I've known in my lifetime.

I got an invitation to spend the day behind the scenes at Game Day when we played Alabama at Cowboy Stadium for the kickoff classic. I got to spend most of the time in the production trailers, and standing behind the Set. By the way, one thing that is interesting is that when you are sitting behind the set, you are facing Des, Kirk, and Fowler. The crowd is the front of the set and is looking at their backs. There are only a handful of people in front of them.

Along the way, I picked up a few things. I did not get the sense that anybody there (production team, etc) like Chris Fowler very much. There is definitely a pecking order, and Chris is the big dog. Several of the crew made comments that were negative toward him to this effect. They had nothing but good things to say about Desmond, Kirk, and David Pollack.

In the end, my contact with them personally was limited, but they were all very nice. Also, my wife has a crush on Rece, but fortunately she thinks I look like him. So this might be good for me.

Chances are most of us that like Musburger are older. We've been watching him our whole lives. I always thought he was at his best doing NFL pregame on CBS. I really liked him doing NCAA basketball also. I was shocked when they canned him. As far as Fowler and Davis goes, I always got the two mixed up. After a few weeks I'm sure I won't know the difference.

Musburger has it pretty good.  Get paid seven figures to leave your Montana ranch once a week, hop on a plane, grab a mike, and call a college football game. Dude makes it look way too easy.  Good for him.

This means Herbie and Des are the next to go. After no SEC champ ESPN will have to go full throttle. Look for Danny Kinnel(sic), who I actually like, and that Georgia
LB moron David something.

Musberger is an announcing god. Period.

As for on topic, this was pretty much telegraphed when Fowler got the PBP gig. God help the poor soul that has to try and wrangle Mark May in future.

Gameday was epic to watch in the 90's for me. But the last 14 years, I've pretty much only tuned in when they're in Ann Arbor. I do like Rece Davis, though. Especially since he calls us Meeeeechigan ala Ufer.

Is excellent...he's great whether he's doing booth play by play or in the studio. I watch more Saturday night games than I do Gameday so I'm personally happy. Plus I love his tennis coverage as well.

Rece Davis is a solid replacement, too. He'll do well
