OT: Ray Rice Assault Video released

Submitted by Lionsfan on

This morning TMZ got a hold of, and released the full video of the Ray Rice incident from this past spring. Previously, there was only video of Ray Rice dragging his unconcious fiancee from the elevator.

It's pretty ugly. To summarize for anyone who doesn't want to watch it- Ray Rice and Janay Palmer enter the elevator. They appear to be arguing, the doors close, and Ray Rice hits her in the face. He backs up from her, and she steps toward him and then he punches her, and knocks her out.

Don't know if I saw it on here on not, but there were a few places where people were arguing that we didn't know the full story, and speculation maybe she attacked him. It's clearly not the case, and the fact that Roger Goodell supposedly had full access to this video when he made the suspension decision, and only chose Rice only got a 2-game suspension is disgusting.

Update: The NFL claims they've never seen the video until today:

"We requested from law enforcement any and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator. That video was not made available to us and no one in our office has seen it until today."

Yeah I saw it and apparently so did Godell before he unleased the "iron fist" of the NFL and suspended him for TWO WHOLE GAMES.  The fury!

I mean it's not like Rice did something as horrible as hanging out with guys smoking weed like Josh Gordon or anything.  Sheesh.

I stand corrected - you are right.  But then I have to ask why not wait to announce the punishment or give maximum and then back off if the video somehow made Rice look better than it appeared.

Either way I'm with you.  Godell gets a second bite of the apple - he better take it and throw the book at him.

is that if the NFL gave more than the ole' college try there might be some legal backlash against the NFL.  In other words the gray area where TMZ operates in obtaining "leaks" prolly wouldn't fly in the war room of NFL lawyers if someone was to propse trying all posible options for obtaining the full video.

which we do not live in.  First off, I am not a lawyer nor have I paid the utmost attention to this story so im not clear on the timeline of events.

That being said the one thing I can think of that sounds reasonable is that if there is an open police investigation the NFL would not try to circumvent that in any public way.  They may have/could have thrown their weight around behind closed doors to obtain the tape but I assume that is risky as well.

This prick deserved to be banned for at least a season. If I were in charge, and I had access to this video evidence, I'd ban him for life. How pathetic.

While there is NO excuse to ever do this, I want to know what she did.

What could she possibly do to make Ray Rice knock her out. In an elevator. In public. On video...

I said there is no excuse. I want to know what triggered it. Not saying that she earned it because hitting a woman is never okay. What would make a famous RB act so stupid and violent in public to his wife? That's all I'm asking.

His response was clearly wrong, but it is not wrong to find the cause. Alcohol, drugs, underling emotional problems...something is not right here and we should try to find our what it is.

Ray Rice's actions were criminally and morally contemptible. Nothing justifies his actions. But looking for a cause is not wrong. It isn't " blaming the victim" to seek an understanding why it happened.

I can't imagine a scenario in which knowing what she said or did is useful to me or anyone else on this board. It would be useful if I wanted to be in a romantic relationship with Ray Rice, I guess, and I didn't want him to punch me. I can't imagine it being very informative in any other scenario.

I don't know Ray Rice, neither do any of us, probably, and I don't want to. He did something wrong and we all know it. He happens to be famous. That's about all that is relevant.

What's far more interesting is that the NFL already looked dumb and awful and heartless for their reaction to this. The video doesn't give us ANY new information. We all knew -- the police report says it -- that Rice struck her with his hand and that's what rendered her unconscious. Now we've all seen it, too. It's not information that's new, it's our visceral reaction to domestic abuse.

.....Of the guy on NFL Radio (Sirrius) this morning that pointed out that she was unconscious because  her head hit the railing, and it probably wasn't the second punch that did the damage. Words cannot begin to explain how rediculous that comment is. Un-Effing-believable. The real sad part of this situation, indeed, is that the woman continues to think he's a worthy husband, most likely, due to his deep pockets. When he gets back to the NFL, off his suspension, I hope he's treated like he's in the clank. I'm sure there are some gentlemen who feel strongly about what he did, and might want to take it out on a guy running up the middle.....

Everyone is really taking my question the wrong way. I didn't say or assume she asked for it. But NO ONE just goes and knocks out their wife because of nothing. I want to know why Ray Rice would just go and do that. That's all. It's probably some stupid insane reason. And clearly he's not right.

No value? 1.3 million women AND 835K men are assaulted every year in the US by their intimate partner.

Maybe people on this blog unfortunately have had experience with that kind of shit?  What if people care and want to learn about what really happened (chronology of events), or want to better understand domestic violence, warning signs, etc.?  How is that over the line?

This same woman who was brutalized by Ray Rice decided to MARRIED HIM one day after he was formally indicted by a grand jury on third-degree aggravated assault for striking her unconscious.  Not unusual for victims of domestic violence perhaps, but it's still way fucked up. Nothing to see here?

Look, call the NFL management the bunch of incompetent, hippocrite fuckwits that they are. Call Ray Rice a violent, knuckle-dragging monster with anger control issues, or a misogynist, if that fits better.  But I don't agree that  questions can't be asked about the victim(s) in this case, or that nothing can possibly be learned from the chain of events leading up to it. That's horseshit.

I fully understand that for some, they don't want to know any more. Guy hits girl and they're done. OK, well, that's up to them.

"I want to know what she did." I have no problem with what you are really asking, but the way you framed the question makes it sound like she definitely did something to provoke what happened. I know that is not what you meant, but that is how I read it and probably a lot of others as well.

Rice was waiting for his then-fiance near the elevators. As she walks by him, he either yells something at her or spits at her. His head snaps as if in a spitting motion but you cant see if anything flies from his mouth. She throws a light slap and connects. They then walk on the elevator, where Rice does the yelling/spitting motion again, and like earlier, you cant see anything coming out of his mouth. She throws a light elbow, as if to back him away from her. Thats when he punches her. She stumbles, and then tries to walk up to him. He hits her again. As she's falling, her head hits the rail in the elevator and she become unconscious. The OP didn't tell the full story, but that's it. If you haven't seen the video and were just asking a legit question instead of "blaming the victim", then I don't see why you got negged. If not, I see why.

I don't think it's battered woman syndrome.  I think it's a case where his fiancee had the options presented to her by Rice's lawyers or the Ravens' lawyers.  Assuming that she wanted to stay with Rice (a big assumption, but it seems that's what happened), she could do one of two things:

1) Tell everybody what happened, and watch Rice get suspended for a long time and lose millions of dollars; or

2) Take the blame for provoking him or whatever, and have Rice hold onto his paychecks/endorsements.

It's fucked up, but she doesn't gain anything by Rice being suspended.  It was in her own self-interest to take the blame even though it's now apparent that doing so was a crock of shit.
