OT - Ravens fire OC Cam Cameron - gutsy move?

Submitted by trueblue262 on

John Harbaugh let Cam Cameron go with 3 weeks left in regular season. Isn't this kind of an odd time to fire a coordinator? I can see if you are out of the hunt for playoffs, but they are in 1st place.

Being that he has ties to Michigan, I think its fair to discuss if he would fit on Hokes staff at any capacity. I know we don't have an opening, but we can still discuss it.

Oh yeah, 6-24-3.

18-37 is below the all-time winning percentage (.425 per Wikipedia), but it's Indiana.  The fact that he was not a successful head coach does not mean he isn't a good position coach. (We can look at other evidence to figure that out.)

I'm not a Ravens fan, but live in Baltimore so I follow them a little more closely than other teams. Anyway, I think Cameron got fired for not getting Ray Rice involved enough. Flacco may not be elite, but Rice definitely is, and Flacco isn't a complete bum. With the talent that offense has, they shouldn't be near the bottom in nearly all offensive statistical categories in the NFL. I find the timing odd, but not the decision. I'm surprised he lasted this long.

No.  Cameron has been awful as the Ravens coordinator.  Flacco hasn't developed at all, he ignored using Ray Rice, the 2nd or 3rd best RB in the NFL, for long stretches, and made a guy like Boldin all but a memory with his play calling.

Not saying that Jim Caldwell will be any better, I personally think he made his career off of Peyton, but Cameron was not gonig to be the savior of that offense to get them a championship.

I've argued before that Borges preferred offense is a vertical offense similar to Cameron's.  Cameron sounds like a dick in person but I'm not convinced he's a terrible OC.  I think being an OC is not nearly as easy as people think.

I endured the 1-15 season.  He was horrendous and the players hated him.  The next year the same team went 11-5 with noodle armed Chad Pennington and Tony Sparano.  I wouldn't hire him to coach a 11&12 year old flag fooball team.

Iirc, he was dumb enough to move randel el, the most dynamic player in the BIG,to wr to start his senior year and play a traditional QB. Eventually moved him back to QB. Sound familiar?

Borges without question. We've already seen the offense pick up with a QB that fits his style better. And he didn't practice at QB after fall ball til after Nebraska.

Needless to say I am extremely excited to see what Al does next year. If he falls flat on his face in big games, then we can start chattering. But this staff one year removed from a BCS bowl win isn't going anywhere unless they willingly do it.

Has had success coaching offense. Before Michigan, he was successful at SDSU. The last time Cam had legit success as an OC was when he was in San Diego with Wade Phillips as DC.
