OT rant - George Mason "stuns" Villanova

Submitted by jshclhn on

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=310772244.  The link from the ESPN front page currently says "George Mason stuns Nova."  Though thankfully the actual article itself has no such ridiculous claim.

I seriously dislike the tendency of media to throw around the word upset.  George Mason was a higher seed than Villanova!  Doesn't that mean they should be FAVORED to win?  George Mason was in a Final Four just 5 years ago - there was no stunning going on here.

Save the word "upset" for the Morehead States of the world.

That is all.

Actually thought the same thing. since when could a 8-9 matchup ever result in a "stunner" or an "upset?"

I really dont like ESPN. They should save the upsets and stuns for tomorrow when Michigan wins by 30

Illinois beating UNLV was on the "upset watch" on CBS.  I agree with you, that a 9 beating an 8, especially Illinois over UNLV doesn't scream upset to me.  I think its a promotional thing where people love upsets so they want to try to push the term as much as possible.

To be fair, stun doesn't have to mean upset.

It could refer to the comeback they made considering they were down by double digits at one point.

George Mason= Mid Major

Villanova= From big six or whatever it is in basketball

This will forever be seen by the media as an upset whether we agree with it or not.

If you actually watched the game you would know that Nova had that game for the taking and just blew it down the stretch. That was a bad loss for them.

George Mason's "Green Machine" Bball band, as lead by UM alum Michael "Doc Nix" Nickens. That band is ridiculous, puts UM's to shame sorry to say.
