OT- Question for Soccer Fans (Lamar Hunt Cup)

Submitted by Butterfield on

Preface this by saying I enjoy watching soccer, but am not what you would consider a diehard.  I don't have a favorite EPL team or rooting interest in Champions League (although I was in London in '07 when Chelsea played Man U in Moscow and the scene was crazier than any superbowl hype I'd ever seen).

I came across this short piece on how the Michigan Bucks will be hosting the Chicago Fire in the Lamar Hunt Cup third round.  They will be playing at "Ultimate Soccer Arenas" in Pontiac next Tuesday night.  My question to soccer fans is this:  What kind of field (pitch, haha) will they be playing on?  It seems like an indoor facility but is it regulation size?  Does it have boards like the indoor soccer venues I knew as a kid or is this comparable to any outdoor field?  Just curious what the rules are for where games can be played and if there isn't any sort of standardized requirement for matches....

I remember it at one point being width 40-80, length, 80-120.  I always enjoyed the idea of having a square field, as retarded as that would be.  Am I just plain wrong altogether?  Perhaps it's different from league to league?  Do they all use FIFA regs?

Ultimate is a great venue. They have 2 full size fields, same as an outdoor field with regulation sizes, as well as mini practice field. The 2 regulation sized fields both have decend amount of seating, with one having more. MSU and UM often play here in spring games.

Most indoor facilities have smaller than normal fields, but ultimate is a newer kickass place.  they have basically a full size field in there.  As far as the regulation size of the field, you could look up the rules on the google machine for specifics, but basically there's a minimum for each of the field dimensions and a maximum.  Most of the time in the US the fields are a little smaller than in other parts of the world just because they double as football fields and they can't make them that much bigger even though everyone would like them to be.  Everything else about the field is standardized, like size of the box, goal, circle, etc.  I am kind of surprised they're playing this game indoors in the middle of May, however.  Seems unnecessary and they could probably get a fair amount of people to attend at a small stadium if they advertised it well enough.  Also, there are no boards.

I am assuming that the Lamar Hunt Trophy draws home teams.

Since the Michigan Bucks use Ultimate Soccer Arenas as there home stadium that is why they are playing there indoors in May.

Also this is a great opportunity to say big ups to a former Rochester Falcon, Freddie Braun. Freddie played college soccer at Louisville and then played for the Michigan Bucks on his way to the Portland Timbers of MLS.

This is an exciting time for the Bucks, and I really wish I could attend the game.  A little trivia: the Bucks were the first 4th tier team to knock out an MLS side in the US Open Cup, beating the New England Revolution in 2000.  Pretty cool honor, and here's hoping they can recreate that magic for next Tuesday's game!

OT for this thread, but didn't think it deserved it's own topic, but Justin Meram has scored his third goal in as many games tonight for the Columbus Crew.
