OT: QB Tyrone Swoopes commits to the University of Texas
The number 2 QB in the country (according to Rivals) Tyrone Swoopes, has committed to the University of Texas. He has a lot of maturing to do as far as his QB play goes, but his ceiling is limitless. He'll get compared to Vince Young from the start, but he has a better arm than Vince. I like him, but his mechanics are scary, and he needs to learn how to play the position. Smart kid, and most scouts say he's very coachable, so you can't ask for much more than that. But at these things go, he can run, and throw the ball with power, so of course Rivals ranked him uber high.

Just wait another year-and-a-half or so, he'll be compared to Devin Gardner. He's going to make everybody forget Vince Young.

His film reminds me of Devin's more than VY's. Both are definitely slower than Vince was, and not as dynamic in the open field, but still naturally athletic. Devin looked better in the passing game than either of them, though.
If anything, it'll be an interesting experiment in how Harsin can adapt his offense to a dual threat qb. I guess not too much unlike watching the Borges-Denard hybrid offense develop.

But what have you seen from Devin that has you convinced that he's better than VY or even outstanding? He hasn't played much so hasn't been able to demonstrate much. He hasn't shown much in spring games, and there (apart from coaches saying they are happy with him) hasn't even been a lot of practice buzz around Devin. Now, maybe that means nothing and he will light it up when Denard leaves, but it seems to me only his recruiting ranking from three years ago supports that view. I'll be thrilled if you are right of course, but just wondering where the conviction comes from.

This is a different year for Texas. With the sudden surge in Texas A&M interest, Texas's Junior Day (Normally a recruiting free for all) only netted Texas one recruit. That should tell you all you need to know,

Texas usually has big Junior Days, but I heard they took a new approach this year. I never heard it hade anything to do with Texas A&M though.

You all need to relax, this is a kid that is a top 3 QB in the country along with our own Shane Morris.
Morris and Swoopes are going to have many battles on the recruiting front ala Mallett and Clausen.
I'm sure every Michigan fan would prefer Morris and every Texas fan wants Swoopes...should be fun to watch these guys progress over the next year.
One thing I'll say about Swoopes, he's got a LONG way to go as a passer. However, he's a very dynamic runner. Right now, he's a WR that can throw rather than a QB who can run.
