OT- PSU coaching search

Submitted by trueblue262 on

My apologies if this is not a worthy thread, but they are in our conference (for now anyway) and although it is nice to see another school have a coaching search go bad, it is infact bad for the B1G to have any school struggle to find a coach.

So, once the "Saban to PSU" rumors are officially proven false, who next?

Matt Millen? Or, better yet, Matt Millen will be part of the search, and is making a push to hire Marty Morningweg! Not far off as his son is either committed, or on the roster, right?

Start the Millen and Morningweg jokes now..........Or you can "defer"

Remember that the PSU President and the AD were terrminated/stepped down along with JoePa.

The interim President and AD are going to be reluctant to hire a permanent HC.  Tom Bradley could very well continue to be intermin HC until a permanent President and AD are hired.

That would give PSU the most flexibility until a permanent President and AD are hired.  The new President and/or AD might have a protege they might want to bring along with them.

Hiring a HC before hiring his bosses would be ass backwards.

Perceptive observation.

1. PSU needs to sort out the whole presidency issue then AD then the head football coach.

2. If the BOT conducts a nationwide thorough and exhaustive search and lands a coach before the presidency mess is sorted out, it will be a public relations disaster.

3. It would confirm the belief that football was way too important on the PSU campus. It will show the priorities of the BOT are misplaced - they are way too concerned about football and the school as a whole - sort of the whole underlying theme of the whole current scandal.

4. Probably they'll have to run with a bunch of interims while the presidency gets sorted out. Once that is done, look for a rapid series of appointments. It will be one of the new president's earliest actions.

5. All of these "dream coach" names being bandied about like Dungy, etc. - we should know now from our own experience and from the insight revealed in Three and Out that these "dream" coaches aren't going to happen. They are just talk show and internet board fodder.

These are some of the names being thrown out there on BWI:

Saban, Dungy, Gruden, Petersen, Richt, Munchak, Stoops, Golden, Schiano, Miles

Seriously, why would Saban, Stoops, and Miles leave their programs for the mess that is Penn State? I can't believe the amount of time their fans spend discussing those particular options...

I don't think that it is possible to predict what they are going to do with the football team without knowing what the hell they are going to do with the university as a whole. You know that it has to piss off the academic types (especially those with any level of fame) that their university is getting a black eye because no one could keep the jocks in line. This goes for any school that has this type of scandal. Penn State has to rebuild the image of their university because they let the football program get out of control. I assure you, most of the BOT could care less who the next football coach is. They are going to worry about being able to talk to people about Penn State without having to answer sex predator questions first.

would be an ideal choice. Former PSU star player under Paterno, very successful GM and HC at the professional level.

If not Hufnagel, then Craig Bohl of NDSU should be seriously considered.

Plenty of choices out there. Not too late to get a good coach.

It's a mystery to me why Foster's name hasn't come up. The only strike against him is no head coaching experience, but they're interviewing NFL position coaches. Foster has consistently great defenses, recruits in the same areas as PSU. It's been known for some years that he's looking for a head coaching spot. Maybe he's an unpleasant guy or is known to have some horrible flaw, but he seems an ideal candidate. Outsider, but not too far outside.

It could take a couple years, or potentially even longer, before the Sandusky matter is fully wrapped up.  I haven't followed his prosecution very closely, but the guy is pretty old and looking at some serious prison time, so I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to take his case to trial, and then there is the possibilty of appeals after that.  Plus it looks like there will be an NCAA investigation, and Penn State also needs to hire a new university president and athletic director.

Given all, that, I wouldn't be surprised to see them do something similar to what Michigan did in its basketball program in the late 1990s with  Brian Ellerbee.  They clean house (including firing Bradley) and bring in a placeholder type of coach just to hold the job for a couple seasons, then look to hire a big name once all the dust settles.
