OT-PS3 Slim

Submitted by mdaddio110 on
I just sold my Wii and saw that a smaller, more affordable PS3 will soon be available. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10313110-1.html?tag=mncol;txt I'm in the market for either a Xbox 360 or PS3, and will be playing sports games primarily. Which system do you guys prefer? Does anyone know how the Playstation online gaming compares to Xbox Live? I appreciate your input.

PS3. Hands down. I've had both a 360 and PS3 and PS3 is the best for sports. I'm the same way - I play sports 95% of the time. PS3 also has free online gaming where as you have to pay for Xbox Live. Go with the PS3.

I've generally enjoyed sports games on the PS3 more. Now that it is at a MUCH more reasonable price point, I think its a viable purchase for someone who largely sticks with that genre.

xbox is ok but I like the ps3. i've never owned an xbox, but i still like the playstation series best. ps3 only breaks like 3% of the time whereas the 360 breaks 33% of the time and playstation network is free. i'm hoping to buy my ps3 in a couple days.

but it was shortly before the purchase of NCAA 2010. Slightly annoying. I'm pretty sure it broke because it overheated, and I'm pretty sure the fan broke because I dropped my ps3 accidentaly, so I'll chalk that up to a my bad. I love my ps3,though, and I think the graphics are better at least slightly and I think the sports games look more realistic. EDIT: The one issue I have had with my ps3 is my analog sticks on my controllers wear out and start to stick. Maybe it's just me or something I did to it, but it's slightly annoying. I'll probably have to get some dual shocks when I get new ones.

I own a Wii but it is unable to read disks at the moment. I think it'll be fixed for free by Nintendo though. I'm planning on getting a PS3 slim when it comes out and when I get my security deposit back on the apartment I just moved out of. I actually don't play sports games too often. I'm a fan of RPGs, RTSs, platformers, and occasionally an FPS or third person shooter. I've found that I really like Madden on the Wii but I don't like NCAA. For some reason, I have a much more difficult time throwing the ball when I want to and to whom I wish with NCAA compared to Madden.

They are similar grapically...BUT...the PS3 has a better controller (in my opinion) and plays Blu Ray discs. The 360 plays HD-DVDs..which...yeahhhhh. Get the PS3

The 360 won't play HD-DVDs. To get that to work, you had to buy a seperate thing that was like $100 or so if I remember corerctly.

Vote me down all you want, but seriously, pop an HD-DVD (if you can find one) in your xbox and see what happens. It'll be one of two things and they both rhyme with jack shit. 360's don't play HD-DVDs. You have to buy some extra crap -- just like you have to to get wireless connectivity. Goddamn, fanboys are annoying. WTF am I even having an argument about this for????? It's like talking about the awesomeness of the 8-track...

That is correct. I never bought one for my X-Box but my friend did and now that HD-DVD's are all but obsolete, it was a wasted investment. If the 360 did have an HD-DVD player in it, don't you think it would have cost around the same price the PS3 did when it came out? It's because of it not having one that it was and is still cheaper than a PS3. EDIT: This was in response to kgroff531.

I recently made the switch to the PS3 after my 360 broke for the second time and I couldn't be happier. Online play is free and the controller rocks. I primarily play sports games as well. Also, if you are a big baseball fan, try out MLB 09: The Show. It is a great game.

at the 300 dollar pricepoint its not even close, you get a great blu ray player, free online play, wireless connection (which the x360 doesnt have) 1080p graphics, more powerful graphics and audio chips, way less likely to break down (RROD), better controller, more hard drive space, a better web browser, rechargeable controllers, and a better more diverse list of exclusives (epinion, 360 has nice FPS, and third person shooters, but besides that not much). pick up the PS3.

...and just get both. I have a 360, a Wii, and a Blu-ray player, but with the $300 slim coming out, I'm planning on selling the Wii and blu-ray and getting a PS3 instead. I'll still probably play the 360 more because I like a lot of their games, but at least I won't have to decide between the two anymore. And hey, if/when my 360 breaks, I'll have a backup system to go to. If I didn't have either right now though, I would probably go with the PS3 despite the fact I've always had an xbox. For what you get, its a great deal.

Just pre-ordered the PS3 Slim through Sony. If you sign up/get approved for a Playstation card, you get $100 back on your first Sony purchase over $299. The new PS3 is $299.99. BOOM, PS3 for $200.

I think I got my PS3 for $500 when I got it 2 years ago. I have the 60 GB which might be the best version because it has 100% compatibility which Sony has since cut due to huge production costs. Even though the PS3 has since dropped in price and now comes with a rumble controller, it was STILL a better buy than the XBox 360 at the time. The 360 unit might have been cheaper, but you have to pay extra for wireless, $50 to play online ($50), and possibly for other things but I don't remember. Think about it: 2 years subscription online and that's $100 less on the remaining difference in price. Plus 360 is a piece of shit anyways. PS3 comes with everything built-in AND Blu Ray. Playing online is free. All the games that 360 proponents told me I would be missing out on are available on PS3 except for Halo 3, but it didn't even matter then. You just need football, boxing, and GTA 4 and maybe Warcraft (stands up to Halo). 360 gets some exclusive content including streaming Netflix (damn you Bill Gates!) and PS3 no longer has backwards compatibility, but that's bubkus. The fact that PS3 is only $300 should make it even more of a no-brainer. Besides, have you ever seen Dark Knight on Blu Ray on an HDTV with surround sound???

I agree with the PS3 crowd, but the blu-ray capabilities are less than desirable. You can't bitstream Dolbe TrueHD or DTS-MA (lossless formats) to a separate receiver. It makes no sense to not include this as an option, and is really frustrating since I would prefer my NAD A/V receiver do the decoding. That said, amazing for games and decent for blu-ray. No reason not to get the PS3.

I asked a similar question on the board not to long ago. The consensus on the board was to get a PS3 but I eventually decided to just go with the 360 because that is what all my friends have. I'm living in Arkansas now and being able to play my buddies back home in Michigan has more than vindicated my decision. I was a little worried about making the switch from the PS2 controller to the xbox controller but got the hang of it really quick.

all of the features everyone else mentioned but what i really love about my ps3 is the SD card reader. I can use my ps3 as a back up hard drive for all of my photos, video, and music.

Off Topic: Per College Football 2010(PS3): MSU has 3 players that would start for Michigan: Cousins(QB) edges Forcier 85-83, Greg Jones(MLB) edges Obi Ezeh 91-88, and Cironi(LT coming off shoulder surgery)is much better than Mark Ortman 91-82. Michigan's other 19 starters are better than MSU's.

360: I love Live and I have from the beginning. It works pretty much flawlessly, and it integrates well with pretty much every game. Usually I can pickup my subscription for $30 each year if I find a deal, so for the price it's 100% worth it for me. Communication with friends / others players is extremely easy and again integrates flawlessly into every game I've played. I've RARELY had any issues with lag / download speeds that I haven't been able to attribute directly to my ISP. PSN: It's free, so really I can't complain too much. However, I find it hard to navigate through the menus to find things, personally I find the home thing to be a needless distraction, and I've had more than a few issues with lag. Communicating with friends is also a bit awkward; it doesn't seem to be integrated too well. Between the two, Live is the clear winner for me and I'd happily pay for a PSN subscription if it meant upping the quality to Live levels. YMMV
