OT: proudest moment ever as a michigan fan

Submitted by andrewG on

My wife is in med school and just messaged me after rounds:

"i have a problem. i don't think i could ever treat patients who are ohio state people
we saw one today, and i just tensed up and felt really uncomfortable"

Could not be more proud.

Got me thinking, what are all of your proudest moments as a Michigan fan?

EDIT: this was meant to be more humorous than serious, and only to serve as a segue to the question at the end. apologies to all those offended.

They are choosing to "not get the joke."  This is the kind of thing you have to do when someone tells racial jokes or trys to engage you in some other type of classless, inapropriate humour.  I am a person who is generally anti-PC, but this one crossed a line.  It merely compounds the problem when you say things like, "I was just joking."  I got the sense you were not joking, that it made you genuinely proud that your wife would think twice about treating someone because they are wearing OSU gear.  A very un-Michigan thing to even think, let alone be proud about.  Your attempt to palm it off as humour was classless.  The fact that your wife had the thought was troubling enough, that she told you about it was further troubling, and it was simply inexplicable that you repeated it in a public forum.  You deserve to get castigated for it.  Hopefully you will learn a lesson from this.  I doubt it though, as you defend what you said thinking that more explanation or a vain attempt at re-framing it will solve the problem, when really what is needed is an apology.

... Watching Brian Griese get the MVP award when we won the  National Championship.  Hearing his dad choke up.  Keith Jackson did the game.  It was my senior year, and I was with good friends who would soon be scattered across the country.

I shed a tear. It surprised me.

Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,
Everything that's wonderful is what I feel when we're together,
Brighter than a lucky penny,
When you're near the rain cloud disappears, dear,
And I feel so fine just to know that you are mine.

My life is sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,
That's how this refrain goes, so come on, join in everybody!

Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,
Everything that's wonderful is sure to come your way
When you're in love to stay.

Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,
Everything that's wonderful is what I feel when we're together,
Brighter than a lucky penny,
When you're near the rain cloud disappears, dear,
And I feel so fine just to know that you are mine.

My life is sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,
That's how this refrain goes, so come on, join in everybody!

Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,
Everything that's wonderful is sure to come your way
'Cause you're in love, you're in love,
And love is here to stay!

As a alum of University of Michigan I have many proud moments ranging from beating OSU in the 100th game to graduation, but I have to say the proudest I have been of the University of Michigan has to be when Gerald R. Ford passed away.   Several members of the Michigan Marching Band volunteered and drove up to Grand Rapids to play the Yellow and Blue as Ford's casket was wheeled across the tarmac.  This is the proudest I have been of University of Michigan and my affiliation to such an outstanding institution.

That happens to be my favorite moment too, though here's the actual story:

We received word that the MMB had been asked to play at Ford's funeral while at Disneyland in California, doing a pep rally for the Rose Bowl.  Initially the director, Jamie Nix, made a speech asking if anybody would be willing to sacrifice their free day in Hollywood in order to go play for the procession (The band usually gets an extra day to be tourists, hang around and de-stress from the day before).  They needed to get 150 band members out of the ~270 who were there, so he was visibly concerned about getting the numbers together.

The response was overwhelming, and in the end they had to turn people away because virtually everyone had volunteered.  The 150 of us lucky enough to be chosen got a quick break after the Rose Bowl game was over to pack and shower, and then got a red-eye charter flight directly to Grand Rapids.  Everyone was really tired from the parade and the game (awake by 5 am for he parade if I recall), but I'm not sure the plane seats allowed too many people to get much actual sleep.  Our arrival in Grand Rapids was hazy in my mind.. all I remember is that somehow we got on a bus and wound up in a high school gym of some kind for initial music rehearsal and breakfast.

When Air Force One arrived with the casket and the procession, I remember being awed by the enormity of both the situation and the plane itself.  We had secret service all around us, and top members of all of the armed forces were there to salute the former president.  Our job was merely to play the Ruffles and Flourishes, Hail to the Chief, The Victors (Trio) and the Yellow and Blue, but it sure felt a lot heavier than that at the time.

Standing still for a long period of time with a metal instrument on a wide open tarmac on the day after New Year's Day in Grand Rapids isn't exactly the warmest of activities, but I can guarantee you that I won't forget that day any time soon.  Definitely the proudest I've been as a Wolverine!

It may more just be happiest moment, but in 2003 when we beat OSU in the 100th game or when Braylon went nuts on MSU in 2004 and we came back to win in 3OT. Those were both pretty amazing feelings. Hell even when we sacked Scheelhasse (sp?) to end the Illinois game last year felt pretty damn good.

The Mealer brothers walk out to the center of the field has to be number 1, just as every one else says. The whole stadium was silent and then erupted in cheers when he touched the banner, it brought a tear to my eye for sure.

But, I can definitely tell you my wors moment as a Michigan fan. Being at the Big House, the day we lost to App State. I have never been more humiliated.

I was just ten years old, but I got to walk on to the field in the Big House with my grandfather and meet the one and only Tom Harmon before the MSU game.  That game set a new college football attendance record at the time, and I got to hear it all when Harmon was anounced. I have more appreciation now for meeting one of the best players in history than I did at the time, but I distinctly remember the pride I felt for my grandfather at that moment. (plus I got a highfive from Greg Skrepenak, who was the biggest human being I had ever seen, and which was pretty cool for me as an aspiring offensive lineman)

1) Seeing Michigan's last second win vs ND in 2009 with son (age 7).

2) Stopping at truck stop in Ohio for bathroom break and having kids remind me, 'Dad don't buy anything we only poop and pee in Ohio."

3) Upon finding out that their teacher went to Michigan State, deciding on their own to end every single page of their assignment books (the book the teacher checks every morning to see that we checked their homework) with "Go Blue" written in Blue and Yellow highlighter.

Lloyd Carr's speech at Bo's memorial in the Big House is definitely one of them for me.  It's one of the best I've ever heard.  I'll always keep a recording of that.

My 2-year-old saying "daddy, more hail...more touchdown Michigan."

And in 2003 when we beat Ohio State and during the post game band show Carl Grapentine said, "the Michigan Marching Band salutes the Big Ten Champions" as we played The Victors. That gave me chills.

This is sad, but worth reading.  Our son was diagnosed with a heart condition called hypoplastic left heart syndrom.  It happens to .013% of all babies, so its pretty rare and always fatal if untreated and often fatal even if treated.

When we got the diagnosis, my wife and I were more than devastated.  After researching the condition, it became apparent that the only hospitals with decent results for treatment are Boston Children's (Harvard's children's hospital), Philadephia Children's (Penn's children's hospital) and Mott Children's.  Those hospitals treat the sickest of the sick children.  The fact that our son's heart condition was so serious that we had to call the Seal Team 6's of the medical field was incredibly humbling and scary.

So, my most proud moment of the University is when through a family connection, within a day of recieving confirmation of our son's condition, we were able to speak with the pediatrict cardiovascular surgeon at Mott Children's.  It made me proud that the surgeon, not just a pediatric cardiologist, at one of the top 3 programs for this rare and scary condition called us, and he was calling from Michigan.

That's all I want to say about this topic.

I'm sure you  probably don't want to talk abou this on the MGoBoard, but I want you to know that the whole Michigan family will be praying for your son. Good luck and if there is anything I can do to help don't hesitate to shoot me an email at darkblueexpress at gmail dot com

A close family member (who is an OSU fan, actually) had open heart surgery at Mott's about 6-7 years ago.  Due to complications from previous surgeries, his heart stopped on two separate occasions, and he, supposedly, single handedly cleaned out the AA blood bank of his blood type.  Today he is active and healthy and I attribute that to the great work they do at Mott's.

He was essentially paralyzed/extremely atophied after weeks and weeks of hardly moving.  To help motivate him with his physical therapy, they made him wear Michigan socks until he could take them off himself!

Easily my proudest moment.

Close #2: Just about anything Charles Woodson did, great childhood memories!

Where a player did something, or a poignant moment, non-game related.  An example of doing the right thing, and being proud to be from Michigan. But only the athletic achievements (other than the ones mentioned above) are coming to mind.

Being in the stand at the Cap 1 on the first day of 2008 was pretty special. Seeing what those players and coaches did, against those odds, after that season...it was special.

And I'm not sure it was proud, as much as surreally content, but being around the Rose Bowl on January 1, 1998, after leaving the presentation inside, around the fans, the Gameday set, and going into the evening, just thinking....finally. We did it.

The first time I walked into the Law Library, late at night, after becoming a University of Michigan Student.  I'll never forget grabbing the door handle, and recollecting all of the famous alumni that had likely studied there before, and had opened the door just like I was then.  It was an absolutely sudden emotion that I didn't see coming, and it was fantastic.

It really made clear the legacy students prior have created and the responsibility that current U of M students and alumni bear to maintain it.

1) My proudest personal moment was after the 1/1/1991 Gator Bowl rout of Ole Miss.  I was in the M Marching Band and my parents lived in New Orleans at the time.  They came to Florida for the game, and then I went home with them afterward.

I was standing in line at a Wendy's somewhere in Mississippi on the trip home, still wearing my MMB sweatshirt.  An older gentleman (classic good 'ol by Southerner) wearing an Ole Miss shirt turned to me and said, "I don't even wanna talk about the game...  I will say this: yall's band kicked ours's band's ass."

2) Almost a tie for first was two years later waiting to go on the field for half-time in the Rose Bowl.  We were on the Washington sideline and some obvious backup QB (dressed, but wearing a baseball cap with no helmet in sight) started talking trash to one of the girls in the band.  All about how much better Washington was than Michigan, etc., etc.

I got the guys attention and a couple of jeers went back and forth.  I closed with, "You know what's sad?  I'm in the f***ing BAND and I'll spend more time on the field today than you will." The guy turned around and didn't say another word.

Apparently when his wife was diagnosed with cancer, her doctors believed it to be terminal.  After a while, they took her to U of M hospital, who were all like "yeah, not so much... we got this."  I believe she is still in remission.

It was basically the Simpsons episode where Mr. Burns was shot:

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was then taken to a better hospital where his condition was upgraded to "alive."

As an (old)  fan, nothing will ever come close to stuffing Woody and his undefeated, supposedly soon to be two-time national champion, greatest team ever assembled, go for two the year before to rub it in Buckeyes.  It put Michigan back on the map in football, and it started the legend of Bo. I watch that game every time I stumble upon it on the BTN.

holy shit, people are actually getting upset about what the OP said? Jesus, Christ.

Uh, my proudest moment will probably be on Nov. 26th, 2011, my last game as a student.

I negged not because I took it as some serious desire to harm patients who are OSU fans, but instead because (IMHE) it's neither funny nor imaginative, and doesn't deserve its own thread.

Just my worthless .02.  "I'm just some fucking guy."

1969 tosu/M game with my dad on TV. My dad said, "no one can beat those hillbillys". When Bo beat Woody, my dad said, "this guy is ok."

Then I got the lecture of always doing your best because you never know what you are going to get.

I'm not offended by the OP because I understand he is only kidding.

FWIW: I had a good friend get into a terrible accident on I75 near Dayton.  She was air lifted to tosu Medical Center and they were awesome.  Maybe not as good as the M Medical Center but great nonetheless.  She has severe brain damage now but at least she is alive because of those Buckeyes.  She transfered to Ann Arbor and those Drs raved about the awesome care she received at tosu.

I still hate tosu though.

4th row 35 yard line on osu side with my dad.  listening to osu players talk smack the whole game, watching woodson go against boston and pretty much render him average at best.  the famous fight happened right in front of us and spilled into osu's bench.  we win and see all the players getting roses past to them.  people were rushing the field and my dad and i sat there exhausted from yelling and jumping up and down. taking in the whole atmosphere was one of the top highlights of my life, especially being with my dad!  my dad and knew when we left we were going to win the rose bowl and national champioship!

This is surprisingly easy for me...

1. Graduating as a first generation college student and having the President deliver my commencement address (2010).

2. An outmatched, young 2010-11 hoops team getting devastated by Wisco and not giving up, when almost all would have.  The moment that D-Mo shot clanked off the rim I had never been more prouder of how my University was represented in an athletic contest.
