OT: The Premier League, who chokes least?

Submitted by Nobody Likes a… on

Now that the Premier league is reaching the business end we are faced with three utterly unlikely teams vying for the title. New boys Leicester, perennial hipster selection/late season faders Tottenham and Arsenal who are a team owned by a man who has the worst wig in all of sports and just haven’t been the same since seal team six killed their most famous supporter.

Given the selection features two teams who perennially fail to get the job done and one who most Americans couldn’t pronounce six months ago, the question is in the final months who chokes the least? I think Leicester holds on, Tottenham finish second arsenal find a way to finish fourth.

Who is your money on?

Arsenal will never win the league again under Wenger if they can't win it this year when both Manchester teams are struggling along with Chelsea.

I mean COME ON!!!

Leicester City!??!?!

21st century version of Blackburn is gonna beat you out for the title?!?!

Why do I always have to support the most underachieving sports teams?

I'm excited about this Rashford kid for MUFC who has been stellar in their Europa Cup match and then against Arsenal.  I hope for a CL slot, but MUFC has to beat Watford today (0-0 at HT).

I think Leicester may pull it out - they are a team of destiny, and their fans are great.  Can't stand Spurs or Arsenal, of course.

It can't be considered a choke job with expectations so abysmally low.  Is there any way Newcastle doesn't go down this year?

Tough to project, but if you're not rooting for Leicester, you're out of your mind (unless you're a long-time Spurs or Gunners fan).  They are the best Cinderella story in major sports in ages.  Results today were very favorable to their cause - Spurs & Gunners both had big opportunities to gain ground, and both blew it!  Next Premier League game for those two is against each other, so with another favorable result, Foxes could put some distance between themselves and their rivals!

I'm seriously hoping for Leicester. Liverpool has had somewhat similar trajectories to UM Football too. Insane history, last won a title in the 90's (94/97), insane first season under an inept head coach (Rodgers/Hoke) where everything fell to shit as soon as a once in a generation offensive talent left (Robinson/Suarez) and now the savior has come back (Klopp/HARBAUGH)

The north London derby is going to be nuts this Saturday. I hope Arsenal pulls it together but I think Spurs are the better side. Whoever wins that game is winning the league.

LC may be the only one who wants it at this point. I got laughed at by my Arenal fan co-worker at the beginning of the season when I said Spurs would be Top 4. Now he has pretty much conceded that.

But LC was 5000-1. Damn I wish I had a time machine.

The last two rounds have gone totally to LC's advantage... they have played like nervous donks not prepared to be top of the table at this point, still get 4 points... meanwhile ALL of their top 3 challengers drop at least one game, the Gunners two.  So despite playing like crap, they pick up a point on Spurs, four on Gunners, three on City, etc.

Frankly... don't count out Chelsea.  Not to catch LC, but they aren't out of the running for a Europe slot, at least Europa League (assuming they don't win UCL this year... like, good luck with PSG alone).  In the Prem, it's entirely possible they don't lose again and win most of their games -- seeing how they are playing for their new manager, and how everyone else is, wanna bet against them? -- they are going to put extreme pressure on MU, the Hammers and the others above them.  They are playing with house money, too, no one expected them to climb back into contention.

I think the top 4 will be, in this order:

1. LC (because... its inexplicable but, given the past week, looks inevitable)

2. Spurs (someone has to get second)

3. MC

4. Arsenal

5. West Ham (why not?  MU has been too unstable; right now they are counting on an 18 year old with exactly 1 Prem game on his resume to save them.  Hah.).

(And Wegner FINALLY gets fired.  This was their year, ripe for the picking.)

Last round, I believe, has CHELSEA v. LEICESTER.  What a game that might be-- LC could be in position to win, and Chelsea might be competing for top 4/5 slot.

Arsenal has finished 3rd or 4th every year for 10 years. Many of those years they were within earshot of 1st with 10-14 games left. A few times they've been in first with 10-14 games left or less. They always choke. Always.

So. If Arsenal wins this weekend, LC wins the league in a huge upset. If Spurs win, they will win the league.

When Tottenham were training in Toronto two summers ago I got meet and greet passes. As Harry Kane walks by he notices my Michigan hat and we start talking about Tom Brady. Long story short Kane then goes on to become the future legend in th 14/15 season and as far as I'm concerned it's because of our conversation about Brady

Let's look at the three contenders' remaining schedules. Also keep in mind that Arsenal are in Champions League (though soon to be out) and the FA Cup. Tottenham are in Europa League (though they have a tough matchup with BVB coming up)

Leicester City - @Watford, Newcastle, @Palace, Southampton, @Sunderland, West Ham, Swansea, @ManU, Everton, @Chelsea

Tottenham - Arsenal, @Villa, Bournemouth, @Liverpool, ManU, @Stoke, West Brom, @Chelsea, Southampton, @Newcastle

Arsenal - @Tottenham, West Brom, @Everton, Watford, @West Ham, Palace, @Sunderland, Norwich, @Man City, Villa

I think those schedules are pretty even. Leicester need to maintain a lead going into those last three matches. Don't want to go into those needing to get 7 points or something like that. Arsenal have an easy finish IMO. They should get 12 points out of those last five matches. Granted, Sunderland and Norwich could be fighting for their lives. Or they could be already down. Villa definitely are.

Going to be an interesting Saturday. Tottenham-Arsenal, Watford-Leicester.
