OT - Premier League Championship Sunday

Submitted by bacon1431 on

One of the best days of the year for soccer fans is the last day of the season. All the games are played at the same time and there's usually something at stake at the top of the table and at the bottom. If you want a taste of what this day can be like, you can check out this video of Survival Sunday 2011, when there were 5 teams at risk of going down the final day: Link  And here's a video of the final day of the 2011-12 season, when City won in stoppage time to take away the title from United Link

Unfortunately, the Premier League has somewhat of a dull final day overall. The top spot is up for grabs. Manchester City sits at top and only needs a point to win the league. Liverpool need to win their match and hope City lose. The only other spots really up for grabs is one of the final Europa League places. Tottenham currently sit in the last one, with Manchester United 3 points behind, but hold the goal differential advantage by a wide margin. So if the Spurs lose and United win, the Red Devils will stay in European play next season (although I think it's best if they miss out and focus on the league next year).

But something that has never happened in the States before will happen today - every single Premier League match will be televised.

10:00 a.m. ET: Manchester City vs. West Ham United – NBC
10:00 a.m. ET: Liverpool vs. Newcastle – NBCSN
10:00 a.m. ET: Tottenham vs. Aston Villa – USA
10:00 a.m. ET: Southampton vs. Manchester United – SYFY
10:00 a.m. ET: Cardiff City vs. Chelsea – CNBC
10:00 a.m. ET: Norwich City vs. Arsenal – MSNBC
10:00 a.m. ET: Hull City vs. Everton – Bravo
10:00 a.m. ET: Fulham vs. Crystal Palace – E!
10:00 a.m. ET: Sunderland vs. Swansea – Esquire
10:00 a.m. ET: West Brom vs. Stoke City – Oxygen

And of course, European soccer provides a wonderful excuse for day drinking here in the States, so I'll be cracking open some brews throughout the excitement.

I work with a Liverpool supporter and I can think of nothing worse than having to listen to him talk about the greatness of Liverpool for the next 4 months! Liverpool supporters act like they invented the game and know everything. It's quite annoying. Like some terrible combination of a smug Yankee fan and the self-pity of a Red Sox fan. I have no special desire to see Man City win it and would prefer they didn't, but they are the lesser of two evils (IMHO).

It's really a no win for me. As a huge fan of parity in all sports,  I despise the money spent by City and the other top teams. And even though I haven't been alive for any Liverpool dominance, I can understand my English and longtime soccer fan friends' annoyance with their fans and arrogance. I'm just hoping for some excitement.

GoBlueRandy, I wish it were just that. I'd be ok with that and could handle it. I work in an office in Newcastle and the majority of my colleagues are NUFC supporters (obviously) but there are Chelsea, ManU, Arsenal, etc. supporters too. Every single one is rooting for Man City. That sort of distain can't be just because Liverpool supporters are proud of their heritage. I wish that there was more parity in top flight football, as it's not competitive beyond the top 5-6 teams, which is a shame.

Guys, do yourself a favor and get into the Championship (2nd tier). Games are on Bein Sports once or twice a week. It's fantastic. My Wolves got relegated from it last year, but it was the most enjoyable season of soccer I've ever had following a league. Only 14 points separated the last playoff spot and the final relegation spot. There were 14 points b/w 1st and 3rd in the Prem last year. And 12 points separating 7th and 8th. And that's with playing 8 games less, allowing fewer games for teams to separate themselves. Wolves got relegated receiving 1.1 points a game. That would have been good enough for 13th in the Prem last year.

One downside to this is they started them all at the same time, so right now every game is at halftime. They should include some kind of red zone channel to this!

Gotta be really careful how you handle the drop. In the last 15 seasons, the following teams were relegated from the Prem and ended up in the third tier w/in a couple seasons after that: Coventry (administration), Charlton Athletic, Leeds, Norwich, Portsmouth (4th tier, administration), Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Wimbledon (now MK Dons), Nottingham Forest, Bradford City (fell to 4th, back in 3rd now), and my Wolves. Blackpool, Birmingham City almost joined the group this year and they beat out Barnsley, who had a couple seasons in the Prem. Second tier is the most competitive league in the world and it's tough to get out of. And not hard to fall out of either and it's a long way back from League One. Thankfully my Wolves were promoted on first try. But ask Sheffield United how easy it is to get back to the Championship. Next season may be the best Championship year yet as most of the clubs will be fairly equal in size.

I will never watch European soccer with those fake injuries. Great sport, but so fucking annoying. They should get a red card for faking.

Ok first you arent watching much. I have seen a hundred Prem games on NBC this year and cant remember even one obvious fake. Thats an urban myth.

The real issue is flopping to draw fouls. But the NBA has that problem just as much.

I've seen Paul Pierce carried off the court and wheelchaired to the lockeroom,, only to come sprinting out of it later and score 20 points in a quarter. And nobody on a football field has ever faked an injury to slow down a hurry up offense.......

Yes, in basketball and football it happens every few games. In soccer every 5 minutes. I played soccer my entire childhood to 12th grade and loved it. I simply said the faking is annoying and you all know it is. You accept it and I don't. I also dislike pro basketball. I love football and hockey. I love to play soccer, but am turned off by the faking in Europe. You like it and I prefer leagues in Brazil. My favorite team is Fortaleza. Yes they have some faking too, but a tenth as much.

Where did i make excuses? I watch Prem and Chsmpionship every week and it is not as bad as you say. There is diving/flopping, but there is tons of that in Brazil as well. I do not know what you're talking about when it comes to faking. I can count on one hand the amount of times I've seen it this year. It's more prominent in continental Europe. So you should probably be complaining about Serie A and La Liga specifically and not in a thread about English soccer. If you ink it happens every 5 minutes though, there's probably no point in arguing with you though as that is so far fetched.

Derby and Brighton (club that Sunderland's manager Gus Poyet was previously employed at) will play the second leg of their Championship Promotion Playoff in about 10 minutes as well. Derby won the first leg at Brighton 2-1 (no away goal rules in Champ. Playoffs).

Pretty good season for Arsenal. 79 points and probably/hopefully/maybe the FA Cup for a squad that fought more injuries than anybody all season.

Derby up 3-1 on aggregate against Brighton with about 8 minutes til half thanks to Wil Hughes goal. Derby are managed by former Middlesbrough and England national team manager (umbrella guy) Steve McClaren. If you want to see one of the craziest playoff finishes, you should watch this clip from last season http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7AeHvFNMaBI

Ok. I'm going to make an effort to get into soccer this year. I need a team to root for in Europe. I have an initial idea of who I like but I'm taking all suggestions. Shoot me your recommendation and why?
