OT - Please take that hat off

Submitted by VictorValiant on

(per mgoboard's policy, i'll try to make this post as apolitical as possible.)

michael moore, after years of sporting a spartan cap, please take the block "M" hat off.  i'd much much much prefer it if you weren't in our bandwagon.  thank you.

Well, Micheal Moore did drop out from UofM Flint. I guess that qualifies him to wear the hat.....?

Still though, this post is almost as political as the Tressel/George W. Bush post from the other day. Pretty unnecessary here, IMO.

.... you have to start a post with "i'll try to make this post as apolitical as possible," you've already failed.

Dude wants to wear a Michigan hat, let him wear a  michigan hat.  Just wish it wasn't such a ridiculous looking one.

Has anyone read Rivethead by Ben Hamper? Pretty good read about assembly lines. Small connection to Moore.

Please!  You express distaste for an individual closely associated with a political mindset, taking a photo from an appearance he gave in support of individuals who are pawns in a larger political game with immense ramifications for millions of Americans.  Just exactly WTF do you think makes your post apolitical?  The implied hatred for a partisan public figure?

While we on MgoBlog may possess varying political views, we are all united by our love of Michigan football.  Dear OP, when you get your next urge to post some hackneyed political point, please do so over at Redstate.com, or NRO online.  We don't need you injecting your political opinions in "apolitical" posts here.  A million negs.  Do you think that you are the only one who feels strongly about anything?

The irony is that your response is making this political, not mine. My post is apolitical because it's about a hat. Moore wearing a cap from my alma mater that I love is akin to seeing Spike Lee wearing a Bulls hat or Jack Nicolson wearing a Celtics hat. Lighten up people. If you want to get so serious today, send your thoughts and prayers to Japan and wherever the tsunami may affect lives.

Well, nobody is being that big of an ass to you.........

I suppose you did make a political post as apolitical as possible, but the fact remains that this post is about a person who we know about purely on a political level. I'm positive you would have received the same reaction if you posted a picture of Jon Stewart or Bill O'Reilly wearing a Michigan hat.

So we have a cast of individuals that we see as villains (for the most part, albeit with grudging respect in some instances).  Individuals like Kalin Lucas, Jim Tressel, Santonio Holmes, and Mark Dantonio are individuals that most of us who are not trolls can agree are loathsome.  More divisive figures, like political figures, elicit a much more varied response from us here, and understandably so.  Given that our country is roughly evenly split along ideological lines, one could expect that roughly half of MgoBloggers feel that in many ways Michael Moore speaks up for what they believe, and therefore do not look upon him with dislike.  Aiming a perjorative post at such a person inflames these extra-MgoBlog societal conflicts and brings them here, where they have no business being.  It appears that you (the OP) expect me to just take your dis of an individual that I admire in stride because you say it is about the hat and the hats he has worn in the past, rather than an excuse to make an ad hominem political attack.  I say that is a little disingenous.

the last thing i want to do is get into or start a political argument on the internet - in most cases, it is a colossal waste of time.  a social commentary i will make here is that it's too bad that people can't put down their red or blue colored glasses and talk about a public figure who's publicly supported a rival school with a hat now appears to be on the other side.  the world isn't black/white.  it doesn't have to be blue/red either.

... with this quote.

"a public figure who's publicly supported a rival school with a hat now appears to be on the other side."

If that public figure had been somebody whom you admired in every other way other than his team affiliation, then he changes his affiliation to be more inline with yours, you would not post it and say, "take it off".  You would post it and say, "He's seen the light," or, "I like him even more now."

You're upset because of the person, not because of the change.  It's okay to admit it.

Now, if you're post had been, "Hey Michael Moore is sporting a Michigan hat.  What's up with that?"  That is apolitical (though knowing the nature of internet boards, it would quickly become political).

Trying to claim this wasn't an attack on Moore for his world view is insidious.

wow, people are sensitive.    the op did not make a political statement.    he was asking why moore is all of a sudden wearing an m hat after wearing an msu hat in everything imaginable he has done for the past ten years.    he's saying it's just liek were fashionable now- not like he's really a supporter and THAT is why it is an appropriate topic on mgoblog because WE ARE ALL ABOUT PASSION and not being a fashionable fan.

and if it's because of some new found allegiance to m because of his years at flint that seems hypocritical.

and no none of this is because of his politics-  frankly if there was a connection then he should have been wearing an m hat long ago since i believe we are as an alumni group much more liberal than sparty and much more capable of holding our own in political dialogue-  why would he not have wanted us as his supporters versus msu.

again- this is not political.   nothing political needs to be read into it.

If Sarah Palin was photographed wearing a Michigan hat and someome made a post similar to this, it would still be policitcal.  It would have nothing to do with the hat and all to do with the personality.

Don't most people come to mgoblog to get away from politics?

On mgoblog, the only partisan debate in which I want to participate is this one: The Wolverines against the world.

When I was in school, I knew someone who was big in the College Dems, and he helped plan a speech from Michael Moore.  Prior to the event, Moore had my friend buy him a Michigan hat at Steve and Barry's or something.  I'm sure he just wanted to pander to the crowd.

I hate the camoflague(sp?) Michigan hats. Can we please ban those? If you wear a Michigan hat it needs to be either maize or blue. My one exception is the Michigan hat I have with pink highlights that was put out to raise awareness for breast cancer.

From a strictly fandom standpoint, I am wondering why he went from wearing a State hat for so long to U-M.  Kind of an interesting move for somebody who's known for his 'look' (if that's what you want to call it).
