OT: Places to eat in Los Angeles

Submitted by Steve Lorenz on
I am relocating to LA for a few months and am simply wondering where the best places to eat are. I want to indulge! Thanks in advance.

If you are looking for a really trendy spot to eat, try Katsuya in Hollywood. They recently opened up another location in LA Live in downtown. If you are lucky you might see some of those fake celebrities. Another note, downtown LA is no longer the s-hole that it used to be. They really revamped some of the area with LA Live and the new apartment complexes. However, the surrounding areas still needs some work.

So here's the knowledge: Roscoe's - a timeless classic Fred 62 - amazing 24-hr diner with delicious food Japon Bistro - possibly some of best sushi I've had, and great value as well (say hi to William if you go) President Thai - fantasic thai food (just don't confuse it with PresidentTwo) In 'n Out - Burger? Burger. Food trucks - cheap, greasy, unhealthy. and delicious. Zankou chicken - Get the tri-tip shawarma for the best middle eastern food you will ever eat. ABC cafe - where else can you get 6 dollar steak and eggs served asian style at 4 in the morning? Cafe Habibi - awesome hookah bar, great middle eastern food, fun times with friends.

I used to live by Cassell's, very good burgers. Also, if you like a good deli, Langer's on 7th street near downtown is the best there is. Canter's in on Fairfax, and it's the more trendy place, but by all means Langer's is better. The best sandwich I've ever eaten is their Pastrami special, with cole slaw and russian dressing. Unbelievable. Kinda pricy, but you probably can't finish it. If you like Indian food, go to Anarkali, on Melrose near La Brea. Best I've found in LA. The Farmer's Market at the Grove is also a cool place to eat, the lady and I eat there a lot (before she spends all my money at Nordstrom). If you have friends, go out for Korean BBQ in Koreatown. All you can eat meat you grill yourself at your table. My personal favorite. There are a number of them on 6th and on Olympic between Vermont and about Western. My last piece of advice: Go into some hispanic restaurant (Mexican, Guatemalan, Salvadorean) that you normally wouldn't. Chances are the servers won't speak a lot of English, you'll get something you're not familiar with, and you'll love it. I'm engaged to a Guatemalan and I've done that a number of times, always with good results. The shadier the place looks, the better the food probably is.

If you're downtown and want something on the cheapish side, try The Pantry at the corner of Figueroa and 9th. If you're in the same area and want to carouse with drunk USC sorority girls, you can't lose at the 9-0 (901 Bar and Grill).

Seconded on the Galley. It is very good but a bit expensive. You can also get a great breakfast in the restaurant inside the bowling alley on Pico and 3rd. It sounds weird but it is good, I used to live two blocks from it. In Venice, General Mao's Kitchen cannot be beat for Chinese food. It is BYOB, as well.

I would definitely try some Korean BBQ in K-Town, a few I would recommend: Soot Bull Jeep - Cheap and delicious! Chosun Galbi - More expensive, but very nice modern atmosphere Also I would recommend going to Lawry's Prime Rib, Where they serve your cut of Prime Rib on a silver cart. Also of note, this is where Rose Bowl Participants go to dine. Bon Appetite!
