In this dicussion, is that Josh Smith "gave himself the nichname 'Mid Range Shawty' a couple years ago," That alone, should keep him gainfully employed.

Well, you'd be 100% wrong. NBA athletes are some of the most underpaid of all the professional sports. How many other sports leagues have maximum contracts that cap the amount of money a player can make?
For example, according to Forbes, Matt Ryan (QB of the Falcons) made $42 million in salary/bonuses last year. That's only $10 million less than LeBron James ($17.9), Kevin Durant ($17.9), and Derrick Rose ($17.6), the last 3 NBA MVPs, made combined.
Matt Stafford made about as much ($33 million) as the two best NBA players combined (Lebron and Durant).

As far as giving out shitty contracts that wildly overpay players, MLB is king.
These were the 10 highest paid baseball players in 2014...
Ryan Howard - $25 mil
Cliff Lee- $25 mil
Zach Greinke - $24 mil
Robinson Cano - $24 mil
Prince Fielder - $24 mil
CC Sabathia - $23 mil
Joe Mauer - $23 mil
Albert Pujols - $23 mil
Cole Hamels - $22.5 mil
Mark Teixeira - $22.5 mil
A lot of LOLs on that list.
