OT: Pistons interested in Jennings/Rondo

Submitted by mgoblue720 on

Sources say Pistons have interest in Brandon Jennings or Rajon Rondo. Dumars says this is untrue and others say it won't happen because they would have to give up Knight and/or Drummond. This could be why they passed on Burke.

I think this would be a good trade and would be happy with this happening.

Don't want either players. Attitude problems and Rondo is coming off of a torn ACL. I think the pistons have made enought moves this offseason to get a 6-8 seed. Hopefully Knight can take the next step with help from Cheecks and Chauncey.

...the Lakers. EDIT: How is it "flamebait" that a month ago Kobe said in an interview that he loves Rondo and wants to play with Rondo and Chris Broussard just said Jennings wants to play for the Lakers next year?

First off: Jennings is a ball hog and Rondo would be a locker room cancer. We brought Chauncey Billups back the play solid minutes and help Brandon Knight's progression as a PG. I had given up on BK until this move. He is similar to Chauncey when he was younger and this is a smart move before it was too later to help BK. Second: The stupidest move we could make is trading Drummond. Honestly, Monroe is a sure-fire double double night in and night out. Why would you want to trade a 16 and 10 guy who only keeps getting better for someone coming off of an injury that has had behavioral issues? Especially with Rasheed Wallace there to coach up our bigs, this move makes no sense to me. Monroe and Drummond could be the top front court in the NBA in 2 years time. Let this work. No need to trade for any PG just yet.

Zach Lowe had a column at Grantland today on the Pistons. He conditionally liked the Josh Smith move, as they still have good cap flexibility for the next free agent class.  He does allow that it's going to create all kinds of spacing issues when the Pistons want to play their ultra big Drummond/Monroe/Smith front court, since none of those guys are effective beyond 15 feet.

The most interesting part of the column, however, was his contention that Monroe is a huge defensive liability and that his inability to defend the pick and roll is what has left the Pistons so defensively poor the past few years. Suggests they may want to try to move him mid season for a point.

Thanks for pointing out that article as I had missed it.   I agree with his point that a frontcourt with Smith and Drummond would be great defensively, but it would be tough to give up on Monroe.   Still, if the Pistons could parlay him into a good PG and/or a good pick in next year's draft it might be worth it.

Overall, I like what they've done this summer.   KCP looked good in the Summer League.  Datome looks like a good pickup and if they can figure out what to do with Smith, they'll definitely be much better.

Unfortunately, I don't seem them as any better than a 6 seed at best, which is likely a first round exit and a low draft pick (which goes to Charlotte I believe).

Joe just signed Josh Smith who plays PF. The Pistons are forced to move Smith to SF, which would be a poor choice, as he is not a great perimeter defender and it affords him "permission" to play more on the perimeter on offense when his strengths are attacking the rim. I like Monroe but the Smith signing seems to put his role in question a bit. I would consider trading BK and Monroe for Rondo. I would not trade Drummond. If he stays healthy, he is the one player on the roster with superstar potential in addition to being a big man and only being 19 yrs old. I am not sure Boston has a trade the Pistons should even consider for Drummond. As for Jennings, the Pistons shouldn't trade for him at all. He is a high volume shooter who dominates the ball and does not make teammates better.

I think SF is and should be his position. As far as PF goes, Monroe is the guy that I think should play it. You can always coach a guy up defensively. Let's face it, we haven't had the greatest of coaches lately. I'm hoping that Cheeks can at least help our PG situation--especially now that Big Shot is here and will also be able to help.

For the basketball side of this Joe acquired about Rondo and was told they're not shopping him yet, Boston is going to wait till the deadline to maximize the deal. The Pistons won't wait that long just to give away our young talent. The Brandon Jennings trade is a possibility as the bucks will lose him next season anyways

I would like rondo but wouldn't want to give up what they would want. I don't really want jennings. He doesn't make the players around him better which a good pg should do. Just as importantly, he doesn't know when to stop shooting...

I was hoping that Joe would sandbag for a great pick in next year's "draft of the decade."   Apparently, they are going to be honest and try to improve instead.  I wish he would have decided to "go young" this year instead.

Do not want either, especially Rondo. This team isn't a contender with either, and I'd rather leave options open for trades or signings later.

Especially if hes willing to sign an extention. A trade for Rondo would give detroit the worse spacing in NBA history. At least Jennings has a respectable J.

if Dumars can trade away Knight, Stuckey and Monroe, I'd be fine with it. Rondo is a top 5 PG in the NBA and those who said that Rondo isn't worth the trade is crazy because you don't pass up a top 5 PG just because he has attitude problems.  Beside the fight, Rondo have done nothing wrong since he went to the NBA.

Jennings is too streaky and doesn't make good decisions with the ball in his hands. He is too expensive for the Pistons to take on with 4 million left in the salary cap.  I don't think Jennings will take a MLE as well....

Monroe finished last season as a top 6 C in the league in terms of Value Added, behind Brook Lopez, Al Jefferson, Al Horford, Marc Gasol, and Dwight Howard.

  • (VA: Value Added - the estimated number of points a player adds to a team’s season total above what a 'replacement player' (for instance, the 12th man on the roster) would produce. Value Added = ([Minutes * (PER - PRL)] / 67). PRL (Position Replacement Level) = 11.5 for power forwards, 11.0 for point guards, 10.6 for centers, 10.5 for shooting guards and small forwards)

That metric isn't too applicable to Rondo last season due to injury, but his PER placed him at 11th, behind Paul, Westbrook, Parker, Irving, Curry, Wall, Deron Williams, Kemba Walker, Calderon, and Conley.

I'd have a VERY hard time being convinced that I should trade my emerging top five 23 year old C for a statistical top ten 27 year old PG that missed a significant chunk of last season.  Adding Knight and an expiring?  Hard pass.

You can't have him. Dumars should have picked Trey. Also, I laugh at some criticisms of Rondo. He's ridiculously competitive and will make your team better. If you don't believe that, you must have missed him playing the last five minutes of the game and overtime after tearing his ACL, and showing up for shootaround for the next game thinking he'd just strained his hamstring. Or when he beat the Heat in a playoff game with one arm. Or when he pretty much single-handedly carried the Celtics to 7 games in the ECF in 2012. And he's got a jump shot. While long 2s are generally a bad thing, he hits them at around 50%, so they're a fine shot for him. He's got this wonderful pull-up from 18 feet out to the left of the free throw line which he'll bury when teams sag off him. And his 3-pointer is coming along as well, but for most of his career he's played with great, veteran shooters, and his job was to get them the ball, and the shots he does take are late in the shot clock when the play has broken down. Last year was the first time he looked for his shot, and so he took better ones. Go pay too much for Brandon Jennings.
