An NBA head coaching job for a talented, yet underachieving team - that is .5 games out of the playoffs - should be attractive to any coach without a job.

The best dogs ever and tend to live long lives for their size.
We rescued a GSP from a pheasant hunting preserve last year because she just don't hunt birds and is terrified by loud noises (think shotgun). Our last GSP lived 15 wonderful years.

They haven't been doing a very good job of tanking for this year's talent-rich draft. Firing Cheeks gives them a perfect excuse to start collecting ping-pong balls.
Ultimately, Cheeks wasn't good enough to make chicken salad out of chicken feathers. Nobody is.

Which is cheap ass Gores fault, could've amnestied him for the cap room instead of selling the draft pick.

Is a Sparty alumnus............so perhaps the Izzo discussion may have some merit. His time seems to be up coaching college players anyway. Good fucking riddance.
February 9th, 2014 at 2:34 PM ^
Do you even watch college basketball? His team is widely considered to be title contender.
February 9th, 2014 at 4:32 PM ^
Izzo's team may be playing well and close to first place in the B1G, but just look at the guy. He seems to lose control of his emotions quite a bit these days. Is that a way to (1) fire up his team or (2) pressure the refs? I think that is indicative of his attitude toward coaching kids.
But yeah, I watch the games, particularly when I attend UM's home games and then on the tube.

I thought the Smith signing happened because they decided not to keep Monroe for the long term. I'd be a little surprised to see him on the roster next season.

If a coach believes he can get us to play defense, I think they'll salivate over this roster. Jennings, Smith and Drummond (and KCP if he develops, which he will IMO) were built for transition play but you gotta get stops to do that. But it's a nightmare lineup for the halfcourt (well, the front court is at least).
February 9th, 2014 at 9:53 PM ^
Jesus what are you smoking? This roster is a disaster and has been since 2008.

February 9th, 2014 at 11:29 PM ^
there is no one on this roster that winning rosters woud want. The rest of the team is either high volume, low efficiency scorers or limited-skill depth players. They suck
February 10th, 2014 at 12:25 AM ^
I can't think of a team in the league that wouldn't start Monroe?
February 10th, 2014 at 8:37 AM ^
The roster is much more talented than other jobs that are open or will be in the summer. As I said, if a coach thinks he can get the team to play defense so they can get out in transition, it's a good roster for it. Jennings, Smith and Drummond can all run up and down the court like deer.

As many of you may have read in my long winded rant earlier this month; Maurice Cheeks is not an NBA level coach or mind. The other thing is that Dumars needs to go, he hired him, and the last 4 train wreck coaches to have coached this dumpster fire of an organization. Dumars has consistently shown that he has no clue how to compete in todays NBA. I'm not sure what further proof anyone needs.
February 9th, 2014 at 12:52 PM ^
Dumars lack of building an identity with the team is what undid his tenure. His coaching hires and FA signings are reflective of uncertainty. We were known as a defensive and team oriented organization when we were most recently successful. But his FA signings and coaching hires are reflective of uncertainty and desperation. I partially blame Gores as I think he wants the team to win now, even though buying a good player that doesn't fit anywhere into the team makeup isn't the best way to do it.
February 9th, 2014 at 12:53 PM ^
So Dumars gets to hire his 1,498,241,418,412 coach now? Thanks for the Championships as a player, and as a GM but it's time to leave Joe.

Why do this when you're a half game out of a playoff spot.
February 9th, 2014 at 1:04 PM ^
We're currently out of the playoffs because Cheeks is terrible. Also this move likely is related to the availability of Lionel Hollins.
