I thought this was deserving of it's own thread as it is too important in case it gets lost in one of the other Boston topics that people aren't checking. Images of the two suspects have been released. Wolverines are pretty spread out over the country so yeah, not really sure what else to say other than if you think you know something there's information in the article to get you to the right people. Pass the message along to family, friends, co-workers, etc.

They prematurely said arrests had been made in the case, then did a 180.

Not sure why CNN is taking all the blame though.  It was every network including the AP.  The only network who didn't claim arrests were made was NBC.  So I guess we aren't going to link to CNN, CBS, AP, etc any more?

To be fair, they reported a "fact" that was given to them supposedly by a local law enforcement official who was not authorized to speak to the media.  The FBI later came out and said they had no one.  For a period of time, CNN's source stuck by his story so CNN doubled down.  That was probably their error.  Should have cut bait.

Except that, contrary to what most people believe, the intent of "news" channels, magazines, newspapers, websites, etc is not to report the news.  It is to make money.  Money is made by increasing readers, viewers, visitors, etc.  The "news" is not there to disseminate credible, 100% factual information to the public.  Obviously, the "news" has found that occasionally (okay, quite often) rushing forward with incorrect information is better than simply stating "There is nothing new to report about the bombing, stay tuned."

Ted Turner wasn't thinking, "Hey, I would like to create a channel which simply gives accurate, unbiased information to the public."  He was thinking, "Hey, I would like to create a channel which selects which "news" the public will be most engrossed by, no matter the actual value, and put that on the tv 24 hours a day."  (Think Casey Anthony... that isn't ****ing news, it is tabloid fodder for grocery store floors which the MSM doles out by the spoonful to people's fat faces.)

I disagree. Vice is becoming a news giant and they deal with here say and that's what I heard. they deliver facts with ZERO political bias behind it. you absolutely can have a fact based news and make plenty of money. in 5-10 years Vice will be as large as any mainstream media.

Look, I love Vice and watch their stuff all the time.  I'm about as "un-edgy" as you can be, but I really like some of the international stories.  But I can't stand behind the "they deliver facts with ZERO political bias behind it" aspect of your comment.  They're pretty left in their opinions and I forget where, but I just saw commentary about their North Korea story noting that they did make everything seem more bizarre than it actually was (I think the guy talking was on the same tour that they did, he did say it was wierd, but not to that extent).  Look, I think they do a pretty good job, but they have to cut ~40 hours of footage into 1, all the while trying make a narrative that is accessible to most viewers.

And the 5-10 years comment... I don't think you're considering just how MASSIVE the corporations that own the news sources are.  There are what, like 10-15 companies / people who own the vast majority of news sources in the country.  They're based out of skyscrapers.  Vice is probably produced in some mid-level rent office space outside of Portland.  They have found a good niche though.  Could certainly turn into something.  I'd go with user-created content that can be upvoted based on quality.  Right now, there just isn't enough on their site to keep me interested for too long.  A lot of their stories are pretty... interesting.

i'm not sure where you got some of your details on Vice, but a few of them are wrong.  Listen to any interview with Shane Smith (founder) and nothing was changed or made to look more crazy from North Korea. There is no political view behind their stories. is there a American view behind the stories? sure. unlike Fox,CNN and others they dont bash the left or right angles of any story. lastly saying that they are out of some small office in portland also provesthat you dont know that much about them. they have 30 offices from new york to istanbul. internet is becoming far more popular for news and Vice will be a giant player going that way.

I agree, although, I suppose I view it the opposite way. CNN should be a credible enough source that if they report something, everyone else should be able to assume it is fact, whereas CNN's source obviously wasn't credible and CNN should have done more to make sure the information they had was fact.

In anycase, I don't normally watch/read any of them. So this whole thing just reinforces why that is.

These guys are honestly the dumbest criminals I can ever remember.  They decided to carry out an attack on literally the most photographed street in the United States of America on that day.  Now that we have a remote idea of what these guys look like, I'm sure we will get some HD photos from a cell phone or digital camera that will really define their facial feautres.

Justice will be done, you sons of bitches.

... was there supposed to be a /s on that?

They're not criminals, they're terrorists.  They're not trying to "get away".  They're trying to make a statement and put fear into the American people.  What better way to do that than to bomb the most photographed street in America?  Moreover, if they are al-Qaeda linked, they're not trying to get away.  Hell, they might want to get caught / killed.  It is more publicity and they think they're going to heaven.

I hope they "resist" when they are found.  I wouldn't mind a trigger-happy cop putting a few into these guys.

but the 2nd suspect is...surprising. He looks like a standard bro you'd see on the 3rd floor of the Ugli. Not someone I would've expected to set off a bomb at the Boston Marathon.

Geez, the news is going to get someone seriously hurt or killed one of these days.  After the school shooting, they identified Lanza's brother.  This factory explosion, I've seen reports ranging from 5 dead to 70.  Do they honestly just guess?  Everything comes from "sources".  Bullshit that they can hide behind unnamed "sources".

"Sources tell me Braxton Miller is transferring.

Sorry, my sources must have been wrong.  In other news..."

If I can't pull that bullshit on a college football message board, why can multi-million dollar companies?
