OT: Phil Hughes Turns Down 500k For One Out

Submitted by HelloHeisman91 on
Phil, a starting pitcher, has been offered the opportunity to pitch out of the bullpen to reach 210 inning on the year. He is currently one out away and that last out would trigger a 500k bonus. "I didn't think it was right." - Phil Hughes

He just said on air (I live in MN) that he would feel bad taking away a reliever's opportunity. He said they work really hard all season and some will get an opportunity to showcase their talents and make the team next year. It wouldn't be fair to them if i took that away from them (paraphrasing his comment).

Not really sure why some people can't understand that him pitching and then giving the money to charity isn't considered the "right thing" for him. He should be applauded, not told how to do the right thing. The guy has morals and is being a good human being.

I read an article yesterday that said how he missed it.  I felt bad for the guy, but he did get 2 different 125k bonuses during the year for hitting innings milestones.  That said, I don't know what I would have done in his position today.  I would want to go get that 500k, but he is making 7.15 million dollars this year.  If this means people don't think he's greedy, that's one way to go about it and I commend him for it.

He might be making sure he preserves his record K/walk rate.  Another walk w/o a K and he wouldn't have the record.  Name in history books >> relatively small sum of money for him.

He needed to get this takin care of earlier. He waited to the end and it rained on his parade. I guess I admire him for not pitching this weekend. On the other hand it doesn't seem very bright to turn it down a half mil.

should have taken the opportunity just to turn around and give it to charity.
Someone with morals, such as him, is better off with "free money" than a potential person with a morale problem.
