OT: PETA Letter to UGa re: Mascot

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on
Following the recent death of the University of Georgia mascot bulldog, PETA has sent the University a letter recommending they use a robot or costumed mascot.
It is time for the university to put an end to the cycle of suffering endured by dogs who are brought into the world solely to represent the school's 'brand'
I'm placing the blame for SKYNET on PETA right now. (HT: Blutarsky @ Get the Picture)

shouldn't PETA be focusing on dog fighting...as opposed to some bulldog that is worshiped by thousands of fans and treated better than most people?

I'm becoming more and more convinced that PETA isn't a real activism organization, but instead is an elaborate SNL skit. Real activists couldn't be as ridiculous as PETA, could they?

at the expense of PETA, Georgia, bulldogs, dawgs, the SEC, "Laser Cats," Michael Vick, Bucky Badger, Godzilla, Mothra, Brutus Buckeye, Sparty, sexual relations involving animatronic entities, etc., that I am getting dizzy. I need to rest for a moment...

Frankly, if I were UGA admin, and knowing the likely political orientation of the majority of their fanbase, I'd hold a press conference in which I publicly burned the letter and declared I had no intention of being bullied by a pack of idiots and morons, and that the tradition of having a bulldog mascot will continue basically forever. Watch the money flow in.

(1) What suffering? (2) What's wrong with branding? PETA's logo includes a rabbit (not a real one, sure), and their site obviously uses real animals to convey their message... does the mere fact that PETA uses animals - even for "good" - mean those animals suffer as mere instruments of PETA's organization? WTF? To the guy who said PETA makes him want to kick puppies. Direct your anger appropriately. I'm a huge animal (dogs in particular) lover. PETA just makes me want to kick PETA members.

I don't blame them. Word on the street is that Georgia has been over-ordering its quota of dogs from local kennels each year and discarding the ones that underperform to stay under the NCAA pet mascot limit. It seems awfully convenient that UGA VII just happened to have a "heart attack" to clear roster space now.

I, for one, don't like the idea of a robot being used and abused for the sole purpose of branding and then being discarded for scrap metal once its useful life is over. Do you have any idea how scarce the precious metals are getting these days? They have rights too, you know!

I'm sure Uga is treated very well by his handlers at Georgia, being that as it may, it is someonewhat cruel to force a bulldog outside in the late summer/early fall in Georgia weather. I grew up with a bulldog and now have pugs. Both breeds suffer from the same issues as it relates to overheating, which is common in brachiocephalic breeds. My childhood bulldog nearly died from 30 minutes outside in a Michigan summer. Even if Uga's body temp. is kept at acceptable levels to prevent serious organ damage or death, you can bet he is damn uncomfortable in that Georgia sun due to his inability to properly cool himself. Unfortunately by attaching the PETA name to the message, the importance of the message is lost.
