OT: Penn State fraternity suspended over online photos

Submitted by GoWings2008 on

I did my due dilligence and didn't see this posted, but...

The Kappa Delta Rho frat at PSU was suspended after private Facebook pages included pictures of nude women sleeping/passed out.  Police said that over 150 students and/or alumni had access to the pages.

Given their recent history, this is really not good for the school.  You'd think that after all the other crap going on in State College that kids would refrain from this sort of behavior.

Well, sorry but I just really hate Penn State in general, so while the university may not exactly be at fault here, I feel no guilt in taking any free chance to tell Penn State and/or Penn State fans to go fuck itself/themselves.

I'm not sure who else here has actually worked with a Penn State fan who cheered and partied when the wins were restored and wore a handmade 409 wristband, but as someone who has, FUCK THOSE PEOPLE. I feel no empathy for them.

I'll admit that I laughed and upvoted this.

But I've seen and met too many people who compartmentalize and defend Paterno saying he did nothing wrong *legally* and completely ignore that what he did was morally wrong, and their only justification of this is always some variation of "well he won a lot of football games for my school" or "he was a pillar of the community" to which my response is always "...who helped shield a pediohile from justice by not reporting it to the police."

Yes, fuck Penn State, but seriously, it seems like I see something every day now about what some frat has done. I don't get how this is somehow worse because it happened at Penn State. And, yes, I'm aware of what happened there before. There was a story yesterday that I don't think was posted here where an email sent out to other frat members ended with "above all, fuck consent".

"Regardless of the rush shirt let's get rachet as f*** during rush week. My d**k will be sucked and f***ed in compound basement whether you guys like it or not. Don't invite any n****r gals or curry monsters or slanted eye chinks, unless they're hot. Ziggy you're [sic] girl can come she's cool. Remember my n***as, erect, assert, and insert, and above all else, f*** consent ... d**ks untouched."

1)      Don’t do illegal and/or morally reprehensible things

2)      If you do engage in these activities it might not be a good idea to document them and post evidence on-line.

Society does appreciate that your level of stupidity makes it much easier to identify and punish you though.

Did anyone high up in the athletic department know about this and do nothing? Just a question, not insinuating anying...

Assuming not every brother they have is creepy as hell, they decided to post to a forum that a) likely had a non creeper who would have serious problems with this and b) tracks who took and viewed which pictures and when.

Seems legit.

This may sound a little paranoid but why can’t people figure out that nothing is really private once it’s in electronic form.  Think your boss is incompetent, a customer is an a hole, a co-worker is hot? Need to organize a cover-up of some illegal recruiting activities or bury an untimely arrest of a key player?  Don’t put this in a freakin e-mail.  That racist or sexist joke that was just so funny you had to share – e-mail, twitter, Facebook is probably not a good idea.  That hilarious picture of you taking a massive bong hit.  You might not want that to live forever on the internet.

Before you place anything on-line or in an e-mail just assume that anyone you don’t want to see it will. If you have questionable things you want to share and/or discuss with others try talking face to face or using a phone.  This is not to excuse the reprehensible behavior of taking photos of passed out girls but merely to point out how stupid people seem to be about modern communication technology.

First week of my post-college job, I was taught this: "Everything you type into that machine is a legal document. Only type it if you feel comfortable having it read aloud in a court of law"

Good advice to live by. I don't think many people get how permanent posting things online is

One of the first companies I worked for had an investment banking operation.  The guys on that side of the business were very vocal about every e-mail being discoverable and making sure you would be comfortable testifying about it in court.  They also pointed out that looking at your e-mail from the perspective of an attorney who was not on your side provides a good guide to what you should and should not say as well as how you say it.

At this point the only e-mail I send around potentially controversial and highly sensitive topics is “call me”

I think they didn't really want it to be private. The minute you show another person, it's not private anymore. That's the lure of the internet, isn't it? That we can get our exhibitionist ya ya's out while seemingly maintaining our privacy? How many cautionary tales does one have to digest to understand that once you share a photograph with one person, it isn't private anymore, and is likely to be shared with many people?

this line of thinking.  It seems like the entire world has gone from being voyeurs to exhibitionists in the last several years.

I'm not really that old, but I feel completely out of touch with most people in  a lot of ways.  I don't have a facebook, twitter, instagram, or any other social media account save for this one.  I've never taken a selfie.

I value my privacy and I take steps to protect it.  Besides, no one cares what I had for lunch today or how much I enjoyed watching whatever was on TV last night.

Thankfully the digital camera did not exist in the 90's.

My wife sent me a link about a guy who found a box of stuff from when he was a teenager.  He was mortified to rediscover his dumb teenage self, and proceeded to give advice on what not to do when you are a teenager.

Cute stuff mostly, but in it he ripped on his 12 year old girlfriend from 20 years ago, posting pics of her less than eloquent break up letters.

Sure enough, the very first comment in the thread was from that same ex-girlfriend, now 20 years older, calling him out for posting it.

Be careful what you post on the internet.  It never forgets.

Everyone is pointing out how this must be a Penn State thing, so much bad happens there. Am I the only one whose first thought was how many bad things have happened at frats throughout the country recently? This seems like a frat thing, not a Penn State thing.

Didn't Penn State have a sorority shut down about a year ago for posting photos which - put politely - were quite, oh, intolerant of others? I believe the photos were of people wearing sombreros and holding a sign to the effect of "Will mow lawn for weed and beer". Yeah, if you want to be removed from campus, go full tilt and demean entire swaths of humanity in a public forum, no half-measures, I guess.

This incident in the posted article, well, MSNBC mentions some of the comments that went with the photos - LINK.

Members of the group commented on the photos with remarks like “banged her lol” and “Lol delete these photos or we’ll be on cnn in a week.”

Very, very disturbing and disgusting.

Then that means it's not uncool and is respectful.
Everybody thinks just like me, right?

Seriously, are we as a society getting dumber? My mom was a teacher for 25 years and she still swears her students got dumber every year. I mean, have you listened to the radio in the last couple years? They have commercials, real ads for how to save money (feed the pig) and to tell men to "take time to be a dad". Really? We are so inept as a group of people that somewhere, the ad council thinks we need to be told how to save money, and if you have a child, you know like, spend time with them.

Sometimes, man. Sometimes....
