OT: Patterson Worse than Brandon?
Apparently, UT is charging members of the Texas Tech marching band $100 per ticket to enter the stadium and play this year at their game. This really, really felt like something Brandon would have done too. Could Patterson actually be more "douchebag money grab CEO" than Brandon???

Brandon had the decency to at least pretend there was no budget to send the MMB to Dallas, because he knew it would piss off a rich alumnus enough to foot the bill.
But this? This is just wrong. Patterson can still go the Brandon route by waiting for the negative feedback and then having someone else in the department release a statement that it was all a clerical error or something.

Speaking of this, unless I completely missed it, #MMBToDallas was completely absent in BLL. I'm curious about that because that even got mention during the broadcast of the Alabama - Michigan game, not to mention, you know, everywhere else.
This, however, is far more egregious and embarrassing. I'm terrified Texas is going to make Michigan's situation look trivial in comparison.

Indeed. I was surprised there was no mention of this in Bacon's book. The anger over the original announcement was more intense than the reactions to the seat cushions and noodle.

It was covered in Fourth and Long

But I think it still at least deserved another mention in this book.

Patterson's revenue sports coaching hires will ALWAYS put him above Brandon. Ok, maybe if he murders a subordinate he will be worse but that's about it.

The jury is still out on Strong. Yes, he was a much more heralded hire than Hoke. But by this time in his Michigan tenure, Hoke already had a BCS bowl win under his belt.

UM also had a much much stronger core than Texas did when both coaches made their debuts
September 11th, 2015 at 2:21 AM ^
Which is a stunning situation. UT can recruit a team full of 5-stars without leaving the state. They have the in-state recruiting advantage Ohio State does, times ten.

Texas is like Michigan from a slightly different alternate universe.
Well liked coach who won a national championship but hung on a bit too long and the game passed him by:
Lloyd Carr = Mack Brown
Completely-outside-the-program new coach brought in after great success at a lesser school:
Rich Rodriguez = Charlie Strong
(too soon to tell how that situation will pan out entirely, but after one season + 1 game, the fans are grumbling)
Asshole athletic director who would give cancer to season ticket holders and then charge them for university-branded chemotherapy drugs:
Dave Brandon = Steve Patterson
Annoying "little brother" school suddenly rising to elite status while the home team flounders:
Michigan State = Texas A&M (2012) + Baylor (2013-?)
I kind of feel bad for them, but I also kind of enjoy seeing it happen from the outside this time.

How about the John Beilein = Shaka Smart hire???
September 10th, 2015 at 11:45 AM ^
Except Brandon didn't hire Beilein while Patterson did get Smart

I was amazed at how much negative response the Strong hire seemed to get. They didn't honestly think Saban was coming did they? At the time, I thought Strong was the most obvious choice in the country, by a long shot.

Should just bring these and politely decline paying the fee.

EVERY home game has corporate sponsorship.
i.e Texas vs. Rice Presented by Southwest Airlines
Wow this guy is awful

The Texas fanbase didn't lose their shit over that?
September 10th, 2015 at 11:49 AM ^
You don't want that sponsorship, Southwest. Texas fans will exclusively NOT fly Southwest because you did that.
September 10th, 2015 at 4:10 PM ^
man, their home schedule stinks. 6 games, with the best one being played in Dallas, and not even in the Cotton Bowl anymore.
September 10th, 2015 at 11:25 AM ^
Brandon did some really dumb shit but charging the band $100 to get into the game is literally* breathtakingly venal.
*as in caused me to exhale and then not inhale for a couple of seconds.

This is actually totally common in the Power 5 conferences.
Schools aren't giving up 2-400 seats to the opposing teams band for free. Usually the visiting schools athletic department covers the cost.... or they cover it out of their visitors ticket allottment.
“all Big 12 teams charge each other for tickets for the band or fans.” Additionally he said “UT was charged and paid [for tickets] last year.”
September 10th, 2015 at 11:52 AM ^
Or less. Not this.
September 10th, 2015 at 11:56 AM ^
According to Texas Tech:
1) They were expecting it
2) That is face value
Texas Tech is going to be charging opposing bands $75.
http://www.kcbd.com/story/29996416/goin-band-to-be-charged-for-seats-at…
"Robert Giovannetti with Texas Tech Athletics tells us this means the band will need to pay $60,000 to play at that Thanksgiving game...
...
It's a cost Giovannetti said they were expecting.
"The business managers from the four Texas schools in the Big 12 talked in July," he said, "and decided that the schools would start charging each other's bands for tickets."
...
"They're being charged $100 per ticket, and that's just what Texas charges for the tickets in that section," Giovannetti said. "The Goin' Band is a big band."
When the opposing teams' bands play at Jones AT&T stadium, they will face similar charges.
"I think the section that they would be in next year, looking ahead, I would guess it would be $75 a ticket," Giovannetti said"
September 10th, 2015 at 1:14 PM ^
That was a very stupid conference decision, then. Teams will stop sending the bands, which removes one more CFB tradition that makes CFB fans come back year after year.
September 10th, 2015 at 1:44 PM ^
It wasn't a conference decision. It was a "The 4 teams from Texas in the B12" decision.
They ALREADY charged (and were charged) by the non-Texas teams in the B12.
According to a friend (who writes marching band drill as a job and is former director of the Wind Ensemble at Emory University) - this is commonplace across college football for large schools.
Usually it isn't a story because the athletic dpeartment at the traveling school donates a portion of their ticket allotment to the band.
From my friend:
"This is a fairly standard practice. The reason you don't hear about this often is that Athletic Departments across the country usually pick up the tab for the band when they are visiting an away stadium. Notice I say "usually," as I know there are exceptions. The biggest problem here is that it seems the Texas Tech athletic department is not going to pick up the bill for the band, expecting them (or the college department they are a part of) to come up with the money.
This is one of the reasons you DON'T often see a visiting band in the stands at your home games. This is one of the reasons many schools (like UGA) send a small pep band to an away game. "
September 10th, 2015 at 3:38 PM ^
So much for Patterson being a "monster that makes Brandon look like a libertarian."
September 10th, 2015 at 12:29 PM ^
Oh, I didn't know that.
It's different when schools bring their marching bands to the big house because the visiting bands have always sat ON the field so there's no seats to be lost. I'm actually surprised all schools don't do this.

Edit: Missed the note below about Big12 ADs agreeing on the band ticket policy. Strange policy and definitely sounds DB-ish.
But Patterson sorely needs a slice of humble pie in his life.
