OT: Patterson Worse than Brandon?

Submitted by FauxMo on

Apparently, UT is charging members of the Texas Tech marching band $100 per ticket to enter the stadium and play this year at their game. This really, really felt like something Brandon would have done too. Could Patterson actually be more "douchebag money grab CEO" than Brandon???

(Can't get the link to the article to embed, but the information is all over the Googles and the Facespaces)

Brandon had the decency to at least pretend there was no budget to send the MMB to Dallas, because he knew it would piss off a rich alumnus enough to foot the bill.

But this? This is just wrong. Patterson can still go the Brandon route by waiting for the negative feedback and then having someone else in the department release a statement that it was all a clerical error or something.

Speaking of this, unless I completely missed it, #MMBToDallas was completely absent in BLL.  I'm curious about that because that even got mention during the broadcast of the Alabama - Michigan game, not to mention, you know, everywhere else.

This, however, is far more egregious and embarrassing.   I'm terrified Texas is going to make Michigan's situation look trivial in comparison.

Patterson's revenue sports coaching hires will ALWAYS put him above Brandon. Ok, maybe if he murders a subordinate he will be worse but that's about it.

Texas is like Michigan from a slightly different alternate universe.

Well liked coach who won a national championship but hung on a bit too long and the game passed him by:

Lloyd Carr = Mack Brown

Completely-outside-the-program new coach brought in after great success at a lesser school:

Rich Rodriguez = Charlie Strong

(too soon to tell how that situation will pan out entirely, but after one season + 1 game, the fans are grumbling)

Asshole athletic director who would give cancer to season ticket holders and then charge them for university-branded chemotherapy drugs:

Dave Brandon = Steve Patterson

Annoying "little brother" school suddenly rising to elite status while the home team flounders:

Michigan State = Texas A&M (2012) + Baylor (2013-?)

I kind of feel bad for them, but I also kind of enjoy seeing it happen from the outside this time.

Brandon did some really dumb shit but charging the band $100 to get into the game is literally* breathtakingly venal.

*as in caused me to exhale and then not inhale for a couple of seconds.

This is actually totally common in the Power 5 conferences.

Schools aren't giving up 2-400 seats to the opposing teams band for free. Usually the visiting schools athletic department covers the cost.... or they cover it out of their visitors ticket allottment.

“all Big 12 teams charge each other for tickets for the band or fans.” Additionally he said “UT was charged and paid [for tickets] last year.”

According to Texas Tech:

1) They were expecting it

2) That is face value

Texas Tech is going to be charging opposing bands $75.

http://www.kcbd.com/story/29996416/goin-band-to-be-charged-for-seats-at…

"Robert Giovannetti with Texas Tech Athletics tells us this means the band will need to pay $60,000 to play at that Thanksgiving game...

...

It's a cost Giovannetti said they were expecting.

"The business managers from the four Texas schools in the Big 12 talked in July," he said, "and decided that the schools would start charging each other's bands for tickets."

...

"They're being charged $100 per ticket, and that's just what Texas charges for the tickets in that section," Giovannetti said. "The Goin' Band is a big band."

When the opposing teams' bands play at Jones AT&T stadium, they will face similar charges.

"I think the section that they would be in next year, looking ahead, I would guess it would be $75 a ticket," Giovannetti said"

It wasn't a conference decision. It was a "The 4 teams from Texas in the B12" decision.

They ALREADY charged (and were charged) by the non-Texas teams in the B12.

According to a friend (who writes marching band drill as a job and is former director of the Wind Ensemble at Emory University) - this is commonplace across college football for large schools.

Usually it isn't a story because the athletic dpeartment at the traveling school donates a portion of their ticket allotment to the band.

From my friend:

"This is a fairly standard practice. The reason you don't hear about this often is that Athletic Departments across the country usually pick up the tab for the band when they are visiting an away stadium. Notice I say "usually," as I know there are exceptions. The biggest problem here is that it seems the Texas Tech athletic department is not going to pick up the bill for the band, expecting them (or the college department they are a part of) to come up with the money.

This is one of the reasons you DON'T often see a visiting band in the stands at your home games. This is one of the reasons many schools (like UGA) send a small pep band to an away game. "

Edit:  Missed the note below about Big12 ADs agreeing on the band ticket policy. Strange policy and definitely sounds DB-ish.

But Patterson sorely needs a slice of humble pie in his life.
