No Pam. Its one thing to ruin a random Indiana-Northwestern game that no one is watching, but you will not ruin a perfectly good NFL game as well.

I hope to be like dang for large sections of the season.

You come at the king, you best not miss.

I'm a girl who CAN'T stand Pam Ward, but she is really the only woman that I can immediately think of that is calling college football.   I would love to have her job one day (Ideally doing it much better), but I understand that it's more credible/less annoying to have people who have actually played the sport to call the games.  I won't be offended by any of the responses to this question, but is it just better if it is a man calling the games? Just trying to get a feel for the general consensus from my lovely MGoCommunity.

I think it helps to have an ex-player or ex-coach as an analyst so long as they can actually explain things and speak coherently, but for PBP by and large most never played professionally and probably never even played in college.  I took a look at Fox's NFL PBP guys and the only one I could tell even played in college was Ron Pitts (who did play in the NFL).  On the other hand, at least three of them are sons of famous broadcasters (Buck, Albert, Brennaman).

To me the key is to get it right and to not talk just for the sake of talking -- this leads to saying stupid stuff.  Call the action appropriately and correctly, call the substitutions, set up your analyst, etc.  Do your research.  I don't feel like Ward does much of any of it very well.

for me personally, it is any woman and football announcing that I dislike.  There are many sideline reporters that are terrific and could probably call a game well, but to me, football is a masculine game with a singularly masculine personality to it.  My favorite boss ever was a woman, the best person who ever worked on a team of mine was a woman, and I love that my wife loves football and goes to our games with me.  I'm raising my daughter to love football.  But for me, a woman in the booth just takes away from the "grr" appeal that only football has.

I get the same feeling both ways.  There's something "off" about a woman calling a football game.  By the same token, I feel like it's almost....creepy, maybe....when you see a women's game of some kind (basketball, or in the Olympics) and it's only men doing the announcing and coaching and whatnot.  I don't know, it's weird.  Maybe I just want the voices I hear to match what I see on the field or court or rink or whatever.

I do know this: the worst thing that can happen to announcing is to have Pam Ward be the designated trailblazer that you can't criticize because it's like criticizing Jackie Robinson.  Because then she'll be the standard by which woman announcers are judged and then oh god what a horrible world if there's a whole army of Pam Wards invading the booth.

Unless by some chance there is a woman who plays or coaches in the NFL successfully (not just 'the first' or 'the only') or maybe gains recognition in her own right as a sportswriter, I don't think she should be calling a game. One of the nicer things about the 21st century is most people believe that if you've earned it, you've earned it - regardless of race, gender, etc. Otherwise what merit does anyone have to call a game above the rest of us at home on the couch? Picking a woman to call a game for the sake of diversity or political correctness rather than her own merit (as a man would) does no one any good in the long or short run.

By this argument, I don't think men announcing gymnastics or figure skating or whatever are that creepy because men have also earned merit in those sports. However, if somewhere in Bizarro world childbirth was an Olympic sport, I would be kind of unsettled if a man was doing the play-by-play.

The world looks better through maize mirror tint.

Still waiting on backup.
