I stopped reading after I saw the headline. Someone save us.
to play football, not to play trumpet
I stopped reading after I saw the headline. Someone save us.
As soon as you think professional sports can't get any worse...
No Pam. Its one thing to ruin a random Indiana-Northwestern game that no one is watching, but you will not ruin a perfectly good NFL game as well.
Now I get to look at that lovely Adam's apple on Saturdays AND Sundays! Joy!
Please let her be sent to the NFL network or something. If that happens, at least our ESPN 2 Michigan games won't be haunted by that suckubus anymore.
I don't watch NFL very often, so if she can get a fulltime NFL gig I'm all for it.
But your point stands.
Ok so I decided to skim some of the story. Why is she winning awards? Why does someone think she's a good announcer? Why did that guy write the article? Christ.
Good. They can have her.
I didn't read it either, but if this means she'll be less likely to cover Michigan games, then I'm all for it.
does that mean no more college games?
"THAT'S A HUGE HOLE!" - Pam Ward
"And that's the Giants in the Blue shirts and gray pants..." - Pam Ward
"Well, it looks like they're putting out the kick team. If they make this, that'll be 3 points on the board." - Pam Ward
"I want a stallion package." - Pam Ward
"The guy under center; he's the quarterback." - Pam Ward
John Madden. The Oracle of the Obvious.
"It doesn't matter if it's blatantly obvious or missing plays - bad announcing is bad announcing." - Dom Toretto (this may have been Pam Ward, I get their voices confused)
Please let her go to the NFL and away from the Big Ten. Pretty please with sugar on top.
than be anywhere even remotely close to the Big Ten. Isn't it ridiculous how all of these politically-correct equality drones buy into the whole 'trailblazing' meme with Pam? Dude, can you not hear or see how bad she is??
I hope she goes there and doesn't come back
But if Joe Buck looked like Samantha Ronson after a night out at Tao everyday, he probably wouldn't be a successful TV announcer either. She looks like she has two black eyes at all times.
I feel like Pam Ward and Suzyn Waldman might actually be holding women back by being the "trailblazers" -- they're so awful, it might make it harder for other women who might actually be good to get into the jobs.
Ward would be the wrong woman on ESPN to get a bump up to the big time -- Doris Burke should be doing more work at the broadcast table for NBA games and less as a sideline reporter.
announcing football. Not because there isn't a woman that might be good at it--I'm positive that there is more than one woman out there who would be technically excellent. But I simply do not want to hear a feminine voice announcing football games ever.
But I simply do not want to hear a feminine voice announcing football games ever.
...So you're saying you're ok with Pam Ward?
happened to her.
You sound like my husband, who won't ever let me choose a female voice for the Garmin GPS when he's driving.
But, honestly? I kind of agree with you.
And that's another post that may get my woman's college degree yanked.
Sounds good to me...as long as we are talking about NFL Europe. I don't know if that even exists anymore. Who cares, we can send her over there anyways.
Can we trade her for Gus Johnson?
I think she would fare better as a gritty Wes Welker type receiver in the games than calling them.
"...I wonder why no one has even bothered to at least talk to me about the possibility." Maybe because you suck? Take the hint. I believe that broadcasters like her lead to the invention of the mute button.
It only goes to prove that she's no dummy who's willing to play dirty. I'm no expert, but it seems as if she's trying to push someone into saying no so she can play the gender card.
Keep her as far away as possible from my beloved NCAAF.
every guy has a dream to chase, right?
Until I realized that I was getting Pam Ward confused with the sideline reporter Pam Oliver. Now, that I realize who Pam Ward is, I must agree that I strongly dislike her as well.
And I want to bang supermodels in between watching Michigan win every game by 100 points. That's probably a more realistic goal, actually.
Andrea Kramer -- Always looks like someone just pulled her tail. Also, her Tweety Bird eyes make me shutter to think what the baby would look like if she and John Clayton ever had a love child.
I don't care about the NFL as much as college football, so I'm perfectly fine with Pam Ward going to NFL. Then maybe we'll have competent announcers for Big Ten games.
Now we can have incorrect names assigned to players every weekend this Fall!
I'm a girl who CAN'T stand Pam Ward, but she is really the only woman that I can immediately think of that is calling college football. I would love to have her job one day (Ideally doing it much better), but I understand that it's more credible/less annoying to have people who have actually played the sport to call the games. I won't be offended by any of the responses to this question, but is it just better if it is a man calling the games? Just trying to get a feel for the general consensus from my lovely MGoCommunity.
I don't care if the announcer is mexican, is a woman, plays WoW all night, takes it in the pooper, murders people, steals from you, steals from me, whatever, as long as he or she calls the game properly (and isn't an idiot).
Erin Andrews does an outstanding job!
But really, I don't think it matters -- she is just brutal.
I think it helps to have an ex-player or ex-coach as an analyst so long as they can actually explain things and speak coherently, but for PBP by and large most never played professionally and probably never even played in college. I took a look at Fox's NFL PBP guys and the only one I could tell even played in college was Ron Pitts (who did play in the NFL). On the other hand, at least three of them are sons of famous broadcasters (Buck, Albert, Brennaman).
To me the key is to get it right and to not talk just for the sake of talking -- this leads to saying stupid stuff. Call the action appropriately and correctly, call the substitutions, set up your analyst, etc. Do your research. I don't feel like Ward does much of any of it very well.
for me personally, it is any woman and football announcing that I dislike. There are many sideline reporters that are terrific and could probably call a game well, but to me, football is a masculine game with a singularly masculine personality to it. My favorite boss ever was a woman, the best person who ever worked on a team of mine was a woman, and I love that my wife loves football and goes to our games with me. I'm raising my daughter to love football. But for me, a woman in the booth just takes away from the "grr" appeal that only football has.
Thanks for the honest response. I can totally understand that.
I get the same feeling both ways. There's something "off" about a woman calling a football game. By the same token, I feel like it's almost....creepy, maybe....when you see a women's game of some kind (basketball, or in the Olympics) and it's only men doing the announcing and coaching and whatnot. I don't know, it's weird. Maybe I just want the voices I hear to match what I see on the field or court or rink or whatever.
I do know this: the worst thing that can happen to announcing is to have Pam Ward be the designated trailblazer that you can't criticize because it's like criticizing Jackie Robinson. Because then she'll be the standard by which woman announcers are judged and then oh god what a horrible world if there's a whole army of Pam Wards invading the booth.
...you mean there's more of her out there????!!!!!!
Unless by some chance there is a woman who plays or coaches in the NFL successfully (not just 'the first' or 'the only') or maybe gains recognition in her own right as a sportswriter, I don't think she should be calling a game. One of the nicer things about the 21st century is most people believe that if you've earned it, you've earned it - regardless of race, gender, etc. Otherwise what merit does anyone have to call a game above the rest of us at home on the couch? Picking a woman to call a game for the sake of diversity or political correctness rather than her own merit (as a man would) does no one any good in the long or short run.
By this argument, I don't think men announcing gymnastics or figure skating or whatever are that creepy because men have also earned merit in those sports. However, if somewhere in Bizarro world childbirth was an Olympic sport, I would be kind of unsettled if a man was doing the play-by-play.
Please get her away from college football.
and I nominate her for the Oakland Raider coverage; since they almost never show up on my tv screen.
In that case, let her do all the blacked out Lions games.
She would stick up for Pam Ward, and call me sexist when I complained about her announcing. Now that she knows a bit more, she complains even worse than I do - if there's going to be a token female announcer, Mrs. Lo wants it to be someone who's going to represent the gender well.
This is my first year not playing fantasy football since 1998 so this is just one more reason that I will probably not watch an NFL game this year.
She would almost be an improvement over Tony Kornhiser. Not a joke.
He is great on PTI, but should stay out of announcing.
That is all.
Is there going to be NFL Europa Part Deux? Send her over!
I would post how I truly feel about this, but it might be the post that gets comments closed, so I'm not going to. Suffice to say that I don't think she should be calling peewee football.
I work Sundays so the TV volume is never that loud anyway.
I would prefer that she work on Sundays as opposed to Saturdays. I can see her announcing the Lions on a regular basis.
I'd prefer she call Towson-Hoftra field hockey games on CBS College Sports.
She probably would do great covering the great outdoor games. I gurantee she has tons of flannel in her closet.
I think she would do better calling games if she would just talk in her natural voice tone which just so happens to sound like James Earl Jones.
he always cover games of absolutely no importance and which no one is watching.
Wasn't she reprimanded for saying something about an injured Marshall player a few years ago? Yet they are looking at moving her up to the NFL?
I guess it kind of makes sense. ESPN was in trouble for some sexual harassment suit, so they save some face by putting a token female in the booth.
Hell, I'd follow her anywhere!
That episode with her pissing and moaning during a commercial break when there was a kid down on the field during a Marshall game, and she obviously didn't want to have to adlib when they cut back to live. There's no room for that. Send her to play by play Women's softball, she'd feel a lot more at home there, she might even find a new girlfriend.
Pam Ward is a bad announcer - like every single one out there not named Brent Musberger or Al Michaels. She's hardly extraordinary, and hardly worse than the D-team clown that Fox and CBS roll out now.
