OT: Pacquiao Marquez 4

Pacquiao-Marquez getting under way right now, I guess I'll watch, hoping for Pacman to win so that there is no longer any excuse for Pacquiao or Mayweather to keep ducking each other...though you know they will keep ducking.

Here's the best stream I could find for those interested:

Who knows

If he can't get out of this fight, probably never...

Pacman scores the first two rounds then gets knocked down by Marquez in the 3rd, this one could be over in 5...

heh.

There never was a Pacquiao era.

Roided up juicer.

Mayweather would have destroyed him...which is why Pac ducked him, regardless of the money.

Manny's fanboys will have to find new pastimes.

Down Goes Pacquiao

Mayweather would destroy this version of Pacquiao.

FWIW, he would have defeated the earlier roided up versions as well.

sure.

Like the last two seconds of the final round?

It wouldn't have been this close against Mayweather.

Money is that you?

Did you find this board to be your obscure fight commentary board?

But seriously, Pacquiao/Mayweather in 2010 would have been a good fight, but today, I think Pacquiao wouldn't stand much of a chance.

Floyd is a pathetic excuse

Floyd is a pathetic excuse for a person but he may be the best fighter I've ever seen... And I've seen them all (assuming there's video anyway). Manny was never in his league and he's a naturally smaller man to boot.

Round 5

Both fighters throwing HAYMAKERS at each other in that round. Maquez went down for a quick second, but both fighters were landing solid punches on each other. Score is likely close to even right now.

Idiot Pacquiao

He should have taken the money to get knocked out by Mayweather two years ago.

They were never in the same class as fighters.

Now he's losing to freaking JMM.

You can't make the argument

You can't make the argument that he wasn't in this fight. He's always wanted to brawl with Marquez and he finally got caught. Connecting at I think it was 33% before that.

Perhaps...

...but watching two declining boxers beat on each other doesn't cement Pac's relevancy.

Basically, he finally got caught by a guy Floyd Mayweather Schooled 10 rounds to 2 in 2009.

I've never thought he would

I've never thought he would take out Mayweather, and the Mayweather/Marquez fight pretty much showed everyone everything you needed to know. His legacy will just be the Marquez boughts (well, I guess the "Mexican killer" phase of his career more generally), and I would atleast be intrigued by them meeting up again. We'll find out if anyone else is in the next couple of months I would assume.

hmmmmmmmmmmm...

I'd be sad to watch them fight again.

I had Marquez at 2-1 coming into this bout due to inexplicable judging in their previous fights.

Marquez was going to have to knock him out to get the win, he wasn't winning any decisons and if they met again he wouldn't either.

At 39 Marquez has nothing to prove and should retire...as should Pacquiao.

Nah...

Marquez has a lot of age on that body at 39. I doubt Pacman fights him again.

Sad things is this is only going to make Mayweather demand more of the cut if those two ever fight, and I don't think they will.

Pacquiao would be an idiot to fight Mayweather

At this stage of their respective careers, Mayweather has not yet started to lose his edge but Pacquiao clearly has...fwiw, this is two straight losses for Manny. Mayweather would beat him soundly for 10 rounds and then Pac would go out.

Seriously, Pac should have taken the 40 million two years ago.

@Pacquiao Fanboys

This is what Mayweather did in 2009 to the "in his prime" Marquez:

  Floyd Mayweather, Unanimous Decision (120-107, 119-108, 118-109)

Pac's done. Any ideas about him fighting Mayweather or having any "legacy" by comparison are seriously flawed...

The steroids can only help you so much, clearly.

Between this and UFC on FOX 5, it was a great night for fight fans.

It was a bad night to be a legend/fan favorite, with BJ Penn, Shogun Rua, and Pac Man all losing.

So much for that marketing campaign

The guy who makes the commercials and gets the product endorsements right before the heavily-promoted fight gets knocked on his face.

Manny should have taken the money that was available for a fight with Mayweather 2 or 3 years ago. He still would have gotten his ass kicked, but he would have gotten the biggest payday in his life. Even if he does now agree to fight Mayweather, the money he'll get will be just a fraction of what he could have gotten.

Are you kidding? He and Arum made waaaaaaay more money by not fighting Floyd and allowing this "feud" to carry on in the press.

Almost the entirety of Pac's box office power stems directly from the fact that he has been promoted as the number one challenger to Floyd, and the only guy capable of beating him.

The moment those two fight the big pay days dry up.

If Floyd wins, Pac's still a legend, but no one gives a shit about him anymore because he's no longer the one great hope to beat Mayweather. So his box office drawing power would die.

If Pac wins, there's no more dragons to slay, and none of the casual fans who bring in the big bucks would give a damn any more, so his pay days would be severely diminished.

Arum blocking Pac from fighting Mayweather was the smartest financial decision he possibly could have made.

Floyd is the big money generator in boxing. Arum and Pac have exploited this to the tune of millions they could have otherwise never come close to banking.

Not so fast my friend.

Figure a 50/50 split in 2010 with the madatory drug testing that Pacquiao refused...would have generated about $50 to $60 million per fighter/camp

Now, you can't do that fight once, unless Mayweather just utterly destroyed him (quite likely but even Floyd in Vegas vs. Pacquiao would have been looking at 115-113 cards or something similar.

They could have manufactured another fight, same monies (more or less).

Now, due to his promoting himself and basically contracting services with Golden Boy Mayweather keeps a lot more than Pacquiao as a percentage. That leech Bob Arum keeps a sizeable amount for himself.

I suspect that Arum's motivation was probably, as you say, to protect Pacquiao's "legacy" by fighting the Timothy Bradleys and JMM's of the world. Guys that, literally in JMM's case, Mayweather dominated. Plainly, this strategy left a lot of money on the table and rather than cement Pacquiao's legacy, has virtually destroyed it.

Pacquiao makes what, $30

Pacquiao makes what, $30 million a fight? Had he fought Floyd in late 2010 and lost he would have missed out on 5 huge pay days that would make that $50 million look paltry by comparison.

There is also no way in hell a rematch happens. Which ever side wins is going to go running for the hills claiming absolute victory.

Playing the "Will they won't they?" gambit has been far more financially lucrative than cashing out in one lump sum.

Couldn't stay up to watch the fight.

Manny has been slowing down the last 5 fights.  I'm a big Manny fan, but Mayweather would obliterate him right now.

He needs to retire before those hits start piling up damage to his brain, and try to hold onto some of his money and enjoy life.

That's gotta be in the top 10 best KOs of this century

It's not often that champion-level boxers get KOd so thoroughly that they fall flat on their face like that.

I wonder how he broke it? Was it Juan's right hand or his face smashing the ground? Lol

"Ducking each other?"

It's Mayweather who has done all of the ducking.  Mayweather is like the bully who draws a line in the sand, dares someone to cross it, and keeps backing up and drawing new lines if the person takes the dare.  There has always been an excuse coming from the Mayweather camp.  Now that Pac-Man's skills appear to have eroded, maybe Mayweather will finally have the courage to try and get it done.

I didn't watch this fight, but Pac-Man's last "fight" looked more like a "work."  I really hope that Pac-Man is sandbagging so that Mayweather will finally fight him.  Mayweather never fights anyone he thinks he has a possibility of losing to.  If he thinks Pac-Man is washed up, he might finally say "yes" to a fight.

Then again, maybe Pac-Man really is washed up.

Well this says you are

Well this says you are wrong.

Seven-division world champion Manny Pacquiao reportedly agreed to fight Mayweather on March 13, 2010 for a split of $50 million.[112] However, the fight was canceled due to disagreements about Olympic-style drug tests. Mayweather's camp wanted blood tests by the United States Anti-Doping Agency, which would conduct random tests from training until the fight date.[113] The Pacquiao camp refused to provide samples, only willing to allow blood to be taken if the test were scheduled. Pacquiao's coach, Freddie Roach, stated that he would allow a blood sample to be taken if there was a cut-off date for blood testing or at least one week before the fight. In an attempt to resolve their differences, the two camps agreed to mediation before a retired judge. After the mediation, Mayweather agreed to a 14-day no-blood-testing window. Pacquiao refused, only agreeing to a 24-day window.[114] On January 7, 2010 Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum declared that the fight was canceled, offering a chance to fight Pacquiao to Joshua Clottey instead; Mayweather accepted the offer to fight Mosley

As Bill the Butcher's post shows, it's been Pacquiao

who's been doing the ducking. Mayweather was willing to submit to USADA random testing up till the day of the fight, but Pacquiao insisted on no testing within 24 days. Now why would any athlete refuse to submit to tests within 24 days of a competition?

Thank You

Marquez didn't have a problem with Floyd's drug testing request in 2009. Then Floyd preceded to stomp him into a mud-hole. Pacman won two close fights with Marquez, had one draw and got KNOCKED OUT COLD in the 4th fight. This was his 5th loss; he is just not on Floyd's level. Full Stop.

Yes, because Wikipedia is

Yes, because Wikipedia is always 100% correct.

Manny agreed to a blood test 14 days before the fight:

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/05/26/10/floyd-silent-after-pacquiao-oks-14-day-blood-test

Also, there's this SI article that says it was a blood test, to a money split, but ultimately a pride issue with co-promoting a fight with Arum:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/bryan_armen_graham/02/29/mayweather-cotto/index.html

"For years, the issue of random blood testing held up Mayweather-Pacquiao. Now it's the purse split. The real issue is pride.

Bob Arum promotes Pacquiao. Mayweather is his own boss, contracting Golden Boy for promotional duties on a fight-by-fight basis. Arum used to promote Mayweather before Floyd left acrimoniously in 2006. Mayweather would rather pass on the richest prizefight in history than co-promote it with Arum."

So, let's look at the facts:

1 - Blood testing.  Floyd would get tested the day of the fight, Manny would OK testing 14 days before the fight.  Who looks better?  Floyd.

2 - Purse.  "He faces Floyd Mayweather, he's not getting 50-50," Mayweather said of Pacquiao.  "Not at all. No one is getting 50-50."  Floyd offered Manny $40 million with no PPV cut, while Floyd would be taking 100+ million in the PPV buys.  Pacquaio's advisor made a counter offer of $50 million each, a 45/45 split of the PPV gate, and the winner getting the remaining 10%.  Floyd rejected it.  Who looks better?  Manny.

3 - If Floyd really didn't want to co-promote the fight with his former promotor Arum, then obviously Floyd is the loser in this situation too.

Hate Pacquaio all you want, but stop denying the facts.  The random blood testing was an issue two years ago.  Recently, it was a money issue.  Maybe they were just ducking each other the whole time.

I wasn't "denying the facts" as you put it.  I simply replied to tater with a post showing that they were, in fact, both dodging each other.  Because he made the assertion that it was all Mayweather.  I didn't see any "hate" for Pacman in my previous post at all.  Like I said, I just provided evidence to show that Tater is wrong.

Thanks for playing.

@Tater

Are you serious?

In 2009 Mayweather absolutely destoyed Juan Manuel Marquez...same guy who fought Pacquiao 4x...same guy who drew him (and arguably won decisons in fights 2 and 3) before knocking his head off last night.

The 2009 JMM was a better fighter, younger, faster etc.

Mayweather didn't duck that fighter.

Pacquiao fans...srsly.

A gigantic portion of Floyd's

A gigantic portion of Floyd's drawing power is dependent upon his being undefeated (in addition to being a villain). If Floyd loses, the rematch will necessarily lose a whole lot of its luster.

If Floyd wins he won't fight Pac again, guaranteed.

You're assuming that no matter the outcome, whichever side wins isn't going to flee for the hills and "Nana nana boo boo!" the other side until the end of eternity.

I will never understand boxing.

You've hit one of the primary reasons that UFC has supplanted boxing in the eyes of millions of younger fight fans all over the world.

I prefer to watch boxing myself, but UFC is doing now what boxing used to do all the way up until the late 80s: make sure that fights between the elite fighters in each weight division happen with regularity. That's the exception rather than the rule now in boxing, especially in the heavyweight division. The proliferation of different boxing organizations and their title belts in combination with crooks like Bob Arum and Don King have made the sport a shadow of what it used to be.

The thing that MMA has going

The thing that MMA has going is that the UFC is controlled by one guy and what he says, goes. You hear it all the time from guys in UFC. If Dana says they will fight so and so, they will fight them. Boxing doesn't have that control. This is not to mention that Dana also does a nice job with some catch weight stuff that people want to see. I still think we will see a GSP/Silva fight in the future because that's what people want to see and Dana understands that.

Manny Pacquioa already wants a 5th fight

and he will probably get it. Not too many other fights I'd rather see. Boxing definitely could use a good American heavyweight to drum up the ratings...

Boxing needs a whole lot more

Boxing needs a whole lot more than a good American heavyweight. Right now I don't see a dominant fighter between Mayweather (mainly at 147) and the Klitchko brothers (240+), weight-wise.
