OT: Oscars Open Thread

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
Sorry, someone else is going to have to pick up the 2-24 Walking Dead thread tonight; that will have to wait for tomorrow for me. Because it's Academy Awards night, and it should be a pretty good one. Some movies people actually have seen, and enough races that are truly up in the air. If you love movies, this is the place to be.

Silver Linings had a terrible final act (the parlay plot device was awful), the Master was beautiful to look at but should have switched the Hoffman's and Phoenix's roles, and was a hot mess narratively to boot, Django, I kind of agree with. But Argo was an excellent Hollywood movie. It did a great job blending humor, suspense, and real drama.

Now, there are a number of glaring innacuracies and ideological problems with it, particularly evident with Zero Dark Thirty's nomination, but as a work of film, it was excellent and held it's quality all the way through.

It's running neck and neck for longest thread of the day after the game thread. Not bad. Small solace for losing the Oscar pool for the first time because they decided to "tie" a category.

Edgy monologue worked for me. . . .The Lincoln joke seemed perfectly suited for Peter Griffin engaged in a heated argument at the Drunken Clam. . . . "Brian Fantana" hitting his face on the microphone is a reminder that "Anchorman: The Legend Continues" is due to be released this year. . . .

Jennifer Lawrence still looks good tripping on the steps leading to the stage, but that wasn’t a good move for Tiffany (Maybe she was channeling Anne Hathaway’s appearance on "Between Two Ferns: Oscar Buzz Edition."). . . . The Channing Tatum-Charlize Theron dance movie might be interesting. . . .

First time since 2006 that the six major awards (best acting, directing, picture) went to six different films. How often has that happened? . . . Shirley Bassey singing "Goldfinger" joins my list of all-time Oscar highlights. . . . Knowing that the song had no chance of winning an Oscar, as a thank you to Seth MacFarlane, couldn’t they have had Norah Jones singing "Everybody Needs A Best Friend" with Mark Wahlberg and Ted on stage with her long BEFORE Adele sang "Skyfall?" . . .

Would Scarlett Johanson’s song, "Before My Time," from the documentary "Chasing Ice" have worked as a soundtrack for the "In Memoriam" segment? . . . Speaking of which, bad move ignoring Andy Griffith’s performance in "A Face In The Crowd" and Alex Karras as Mongo in "Blazing Saddles" in the "In Memoriam" segment? . . . Doubt that I’d see "Unicorn Apocalypse: The Movie," but, like Daniel Day Lewis, I’d be interested in seeing Meryl Streep as "Lincoln." . . .

Although I haven’t seen the movie, I finally learned that "Life of Pi" is not 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510+ hours long.

Holy shit. Seth McFarlane and the Oscars in general are receiving a lot of flack for *misogyny*. http://www.vulture.com/2013/02/why-seth-macfarlanes-misogyny-matters.ht…

I just. I don't get it.  People can't make jokes anymore. 50% of the population is immune from being joked about lest you expose yourself as a sexist pig.
