OT: Oscars Open Thread

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
Sorry, someone else is going to have to pick up the 2-24 Walking Dead thread tonight; that will have to wait for tomorrow for me. Because it's Academy Awards night, and it should be a pretty good one. Some movies people actually have seen, and enough races that are truly up in the air. If you love movies, this is the place to be.

Yes, the special effects are spectacular, but it was the only way to make that film.  I read (and loved) the book, and it was an incredibly faithful adaptation.  Visually magnificent, but much much more.  (It doesn't all take place on the boat, by the way.)  The human story (and the animals are part of that), and that wonderful young man who plays the young Pi is not FX, nor are the parts of the story of Pi's childhood & family, but they're as colorful and entertaining as the middle section on the boat.  Not disappointed it didn't get best picture in a year full of good choices, but Ang Lee's directing award was well deserved in another crowded field.

Every time I hear Marvin Hamlisch's name, I think of Role Models...

Augie Farks: Naysayers tell me "You should be embarrassed", "You should not be fighting", "You look like a young Marvin Hamlisch". I say "Nay, I am not embarrassed", "I will fight", "Who the fuck is Marvin Hamlisch?"
Danny: He wrote the music for The Sting.
Wheeler: That's a good movie.
