OT: Oscars Open Thread

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
Sorry, someone else is going to have to pick up the 2-24 Walking Dead thread tonight; that will have to wait for tomorrow for me. Because it's Academy Awards night, and it should be a pretty good one. Some movies people actually have seen, and enough races that are truly up in the air. If you love movies, this is the place to be.

I negged this thread because, as much as I like movies, the Oscars are stupid and insufferable.

Then I had a crisis of conscience and realized that if I didn't want people negging soccer threads because they think soccer is stupid, then I shouldn't neg something just because I don't like it.

And then I wrote a post on it, because I have nothing else to contribute to this thread.

That's actually probably going to be the most controversial part of the night. There's a huge VFX protest going on because of the industry's increasing reliance on VFX and decreasing compensation for VFX companies. Basically, tons of VFX houses are going bankrupt despite the industry relying on them more and more, including the company that just won the Oscar for visual effects. So it seems really crass that the guy was about to bring up the fact that the Oscar winning company was no more, only to get cut off.

I don't think that's why they cut him off, but it's going to cause something of a hubbub tomorrow, probably.

Biffed the big point one.

Edit: and my first one wrong after the first pick....Innocente. Had Mondays at Racine. Oh, well.

It's pretty bad that I could name every movie each of those clips was taken from... I may have an addiction (and a box set of every pre 2008 Bond film on VCR)

I was hoping they would have brought all the actors who have portrayed James Bond on stage.  That would have been cool and considering that a couple of those guys are getting up there in age, there won't be another opportunity like this again.

Overall, given all the hype they threw at honoring 50 years of James Bond, the tribute came up short for me.

It was a decently entertaining movie that stretched or fabricated the true story it was based on. I'm not sure how in the world it beats out any of those others for best editing, or how it got a best pic nod over The Master.
