OT: Oscars Open Thread

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
Sorry, someone else is going to have to pick up the 2-24 Walking Dead thread tonight; that will have to wait for tomorrow for me. Because it's Academy Awards night, and it should be a pretty good one. Some movies people actually have seen, and enough races that are truly up in the air. If you love movies, this is the place to be.

I've only seen Argo so I can't make a reasoned argument on the Best Picture Award. I thought Argo was excellent. My wife and I have Django next on our wish list - tickets plus baby sitter make movie night relegated to special occasions.

How were the other Best Picture nominees?

I have to say, I'm actually interested for the first time ever this year, because I've actaully seen every major movie that was nominated for all of the big stuff.  IMO- Argo all the way- it was the best I saw this year along with Skyfall and Les Miz behind it

I did see it, and I loved it.  BUT that's not saying much because I love practically every action movie or movie like that.  I read "No Easy Day" (the book about the mission) about a week before I saw the movie, so I was pretty pumped on the whole thing.  But yes, I did like it

I didn't really get an action movie vibe from zero dark thirty...I guess it moved too slow for me. I haven't liked very many of the Middle East-based thrillers in recent years (ie hurt locker, syriana), so maybe that has something to do with why I am not anxious to see Argo.

At the same time, I did appreciate zero dark thirty for not being very hollywood. I thought the Osama death scene was perfectly done (didn't make it overly dramatic). But I found the story leading up to it to be boring.

Argo should win tonight.

Daniel Day Lewis wins yet again.

Jennifer Lawrence gets her first statute

Christopher Waltz wins for playing the same character he played in Inglorious Bastards

Anne Hathaway wins for 15 minutes of Les Mis.

I'm going with an inside guess that Riva upsets Lawrence, but she's the safe bet. I think supporting actor is probably De Niro vs. Jones though. But you observation is spot on...I can just see them going "you're playing the same character, but this time he's a GOOD guy..."

Edit: wow, great call!

The Waltz characters are similar because they are supposed to be related.  The character in Django is supposed to be the great grandfather of the character in Inglorious.  I believe Tarantino is going to make another film with a character of the same lineage in between the two.

I've ever been interested in the oscars bc I've seen almost every movie up for an Oscar this year (gap year before med school...living the life of a retiree)

Unfortunately, one of the only movies I didn't see was Argo. I can't say why, but it just doesn't interest me.

Loved Lincoln.
