OT: Oregon to Wear Pink Helmets...Uniformz!!!

Submitted by B-Nut-GoBlue on

Against Wazzu this weekend (and socks and cleats, duh).  I think we can all agree a nice uniformz debate would help temper things around here.  Why not discuss Oregon's methods in supporting breast cancer.  Also, they'll be auctioning 25 helmets off to raise funds for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.  Read more in the following link.

about Oregon and pink uniforms. If the goal is 'awareness'...I'd argue they hit their goal. It's not always about right, wrong, or perception, but perhaps the fact you are TALKING about it, which was their point. Not so much donating, etc. Our own government is a shining example of selfish wasteful decisions. Why should the NFL/NCAA be any different? Nobody REALLYcares...so long as you get yours.

I like the intent but everyone is aware of breast cancer already.  How about breast cancer prevention?  More thermograms than mammograms; nutrition, education, etc.  Enough money for harmful mammograms and drugs.

It's about separating you from your money, plain and simple.

I'm sure it all started out with good intentions.  But what they have figured out is, "hey, this pink shit sells like HOTCAKES!!!".  So now they are slapping pink on EVERYTHING and selling it to you, while donating a nominal amount to random breast cancer charity so that you can feel good about buying their pink crap.  And really, who can talk bad about supporting breast cancer without looking like a total dick?

You want to support breast cancer?  Donate money directly to a group that funds cancer research.  I'm no expert.  I'm sure someone on here will know which groups do this. I would bet the American Cancer Society does but I haven't vetted the situation.  Don't buy some pink crap where 90% of the profits go to the maker of the shit and a few pennies go to the charity.

I'm not saying it's a horrible thing altogether as maybe you were just going to waste that money on other shit anyway, but see it for what it is--a marketing gimmick.  They throw a few pennies at a good cause so that they can sell you more shit and you can tell yourself you should feel GOOD about buying their shit.

There are a lot of ways to make your money count a lot more if you really want to support a cause.

I recommend paying attention to what organization gets a "portion" of the profits from sales of whatever pink paraphernalia, looking them up to see if they actually follow through, and donating the cost of said pink paraphernalia directly to that organization.

Or, hell...donate to the Michigan Cancer Center.

We need our sisters, mothers, daughters and wives.

I just hope the funds raised float past the bureaucracy and arrive at the research lab because it's science and math, not uniformz and fashion, that make a dent in this.

I'm getting tired of all the pink this, pink that, pink everything.  Yes, I get the point that breast cancer is bad, and I hope they find a cure - but I hope they find cures for other debilitating diseases, too, even those that aren't associated with trendy marketing schemes.

I understand breast cancer is horrible and has caused tremendous heartache and trauma for so many people and families worldwide.  But, why is it that breast cancer gets a whole month of focus while heart disease, lung cancer, prostate cancer, suicides and other leading causes of death get nothing of the sort?

Behind all of this is an extreme fear of death- a refusal to live life on its own terms and go when called. Death is not failure, a long life is not necessarily better than a short one if a long life is lived in fear. A person who dies at 70 is not less dead than a person who dies at 30. I think this fear can betray a real lack of faith in anything beyond life- this is worse than breast cancer.
