OT: The Onion coming to Ann Arbor
ClickOnDetroit.com is reporting that The Onion will now be circulating their newspaper throughout Ann Arbor. Story lives here
The partnership will bring print editions of The Onion to Ann Arbor street corners, coffee shops, bars and bookstores for the first time. Local A.V. Club content featuring the best of Ann Arbor music, comedy, film and arts will also be featured in the newspaper.
Though I love The Onion, as I'm sure many of you do as well, I can't believe this will be a good thing for UM's own Every Three Weekly. I believe Brian wrote for it when he was in school and I loved reading it in the stands before football games on Fall Saturdays.
Whats a bookstore?
Favorite E3W headline ever: Course on Abortion cancelled after nine weeks.
April showers bring May flowers; Mayflower brings smallpox, white devils.
I think there's room for both, given that the E3W's best stuff is local to Ann Arbor and U-M anyway.
Aren't both of the publications free? If so, you can get you A2 an UofM humor from one place, and then get you national comedy from another. If anything, it would raise awareness about the area's selection of comedy reads.
unless the Onion plans to use students to write and they plan to start enrolling in classes, they won't be able to offer the same content that makes the E3W so great for A2
When did free distribution in Ann Arbor stop before? Mid 90's? This is great news. One of the little cultural advantages to living in Chicago was the free Onions everywhere. Glad it's followed me back to Michigan.
...in fact, Brian once good friend, Amol, started the E3W in 1998-1999 timeframe.
It was a moment of celebration in the beginning when you could actually find an E3W. There weren't any boxes or stacks of copies everywhere, you'd have to pretty much find someone handing them out. I remember getting more than a few copies in the concourse at Yost.
Jesus. Since you got off the trip about the Fab Five being horrible human beings, 90 percent of your posts are you reminscing about campus life during your college days.
It's nauseating.
I accidently moderated your comment as normal; I wanted to moderate it as flamebait.
Chill out. Reminiscing about college on a board that is highly populated by Michigan graduates and students is always acceptable.
Thanks for telling me what I should always accept. Your guidance is welcomed.
Hahahahahaha.

<br>...but for real...everything okay, Champ?
umad?
Got you.
Calmer'n you are.
I love The Onion, and I hope to someday wake up in my future apartment in AA, walk downstairs, and pick up a free copy of The Onion magazine hot off the presses.
It'll be great to have the Onion and the E3W.. Both are amazing. Back page of the E3W is always the best
Agreed. My favorite E3W back page was a giant picture of the Super Dome and New Orelans ripped to shreds after Katrina with a bolded caption that read, "FREE SHIT."
Anyone read the Gargoyle anymore?
Never been a fan of The Gargoyle.
we get that a lot.
We've still got a decent presence on campus - a lot bigger than we used to, at least.
The garg was pretty terrible from like, 2003 - 2009, but we've quadrupled our staff under the last two editors and print way more often (and sometimes stuff that's actually funny).
I pretty much ignored the Gargolye after my freshman year (07) but now that I work the overnight shift at the Fishbowl i started picking up copies when it was an especially slow night. Over the last year or so there has been a noticeable increase in quality, so keep on doing what you're doing; it seems to be working.
I read the Gargoyle religiously in the late '80s. When I left, I didn't read a print edition until my brother arrived on campus in '02 and gave me a copy during one of his breaks. It seemed very unfunny - in contrast to E3W which sold me with headlines like "North Campus Officially Renamed 'BFE'". Good to hear that the Gargoyle is getting back on its feet.
fwiw, i'd agree with that assessment. so way to go?
The Onion is great, but all of its satirical pieces are based on national stories. What I got from the OP is that the edition available in Ann Arbor will contain national content from The Onion and local arts/entertainment content from the AV Club (the more serious, cultural side of the operation).
Sooo rather than infringing on the Every Three Weekly's territory, I would expect the Michigan Daily's arts section to be in trouble.
The AV Club's local stuff is always really, really good. Which is more than I could ever say for Daily Arts.
There is a newspaper that used to be in this area called "Fun". Man I miss that one.
I will fight all comers over the last copy in any store.....love that paper.
As a current resident of Minneapolis, former part-time resident of Madison (both Onion cities), and once student in Ann Arbor longing for satire beyond the Every Three Weekly... this is a great proposition for all involved! Everyone pick up your Onion every week!
