OT - one last Baxter Update?!

Submitted by TrppWlbrnID on

Back when I first started visiting this site, not a post could go by without someone asking for a "Baxter update." it was everywhere and this was when tomvh was still around and tim s. it might have been em0 or king of belch, but whoever it was it was my first exposure to an MGoMeme.

Anyhoo, the subject of the update, Dillon Baxter was a 5* rb who flirted with going blue but ended up at USC. He then left there after this past season, surfaced at SDSU and has now left, according to the tweeters. Of no real consequence here, just saying goodbye to a meme. Goodbye :(

Brent Schrotenboer (@Schrotenboer) 2/29/12 7:09 PM San Deiego State has dismissed Dillon Baxter from the team, less than 2 months since he transferred from USC

Man, talk about a bust.  He was the High School player of the Year to a few services and a consensus five star.  It just shows that nobody's a can't miss prospect.

I don't think the services only rate talent.  It's mostly that, but often you'll see guys with behavior or grade issues get rated lower because of it.

That said, a prospect's offer list is usually also affected by these issues, but Baxter's wasn't.  I just don't think people saw this coming.  I don't recall him every being labeled as an upstanding guy, but I don't remember anyone concerned about this stuff either.

Dave Baxter is exhibit A as to why we need an MGoHOF veterans committee. Can you imagine how this blog would have reacted to an afro like that? And is it just me, or does Frieder look like George McFly?

Baxter and Tate were friends and HS teammates.  Tate was the biggest reason we were in it for Baxter anyway.  IMHO the thing I like most about Hoke is that he's willing to turn a super talented guy like Yuri Wright down because of character issues.  There are always going to be your Boubocar's in a class that just end up freaking out.  There's no need to tempt fate.

to accept 2nd tier status, or become the SEC. Personally, I think there are traits that can overide pure athleticism. I think those traits come in shades of good and bad, and I am just fine with having Hoke & Co. make the tough calls.

What's that Baxter? You pooped in the refrigerator? And you ate the whole... wheel of cheese? How'd you do that? Heck, I'm not even mad; that's amazing!

Ever since I saw that kid, I figured he had character issues.  Someone that looks like they're from the cast of Jersey Shore just seems like an automatic piece of shit.

(lol)

I imagine it is pretty hard to get kicked out of a program at a time when you aren't even allowed to have much, if any, organized contact with the coaching staff.  Have to be quite a fuck up to receive the boot before you even have a chance to attend your first practice, but by all accounts Baxter was just such a guy at SC.

Also think the scouts missed just from a talent perspective.  He had some great open field runs and was from San Diego so the "he's Reggie Bush" comparisons were pretty rampant during recruiting, but Baxter is smaller, slower, and more upright/awkward running with the ball.  Never really impressed the few times he got to carry the ball in college.

Dillion Baxter was all hype. Yeah, the kid has a ton of talent, but you need more than talent to succeed in college, especially at places like USC who always recruit to end talent. Obviously Baxter did not like competition and couldn't adjust his attitude now will be looking for a 3rd college in two years to play at. Odds are he ends up in some FCS school. What a waste of talent. So glad Michigan didn't land him. Go Blue!

I'm sure he's thinking now that he will just enter the NFL next year and start playing pro.  In a couple years attending class and staying awake in study hall won't sound so bad.
