Should be a good game and I am glad Miller has been playing lights out. Loungo has been playing well though and will almost defintely be a tougher obstacle than Brodeur was last game. Hoping US pulls it out.

Ohno is one of the unluckiest in speed skating, yet he still wins medals. A couple days ago he could have won gold if that one guy had not have knocked him off his path,yet the guy did not get a DQ.

Glad to see the US grab the bronze after Ohno's late push. The nature of the sport seems to leave the door open for controversial calls.

He also was in 4th until 2 Koreans took themselves out (well, 1 Korean took himself out and the other along with him). The DQ is really unfortunate but short track is inherently a game of luck; Ohno's been on the winning side of it a fair amount too.

Yeah, there's a lot of luck in the races, but I don't think referee decisions can be included in luck. I'm fine with DQs when it's indisputable that the contact took down the skater, but I think that's disputable in Ohno's last race -- it seems pretty clear Ohno didn't push the Canadian skater at all. But the ref reigns supreme, and that's really the one thing I dislike about short track speed skating.
I also think it's odd that an event final featuring two Canadian skaters in a Canadian venue would also feature a Canadian ref. That pushes the bounds of credibility.

He pretty much said so during post-race comments when asked about the Canadian ref.
Apollo seems to take it all in stride, though. He chalks it all up to just being part of the sport and moves on. Love watching the guy compete.

I have to agree. That was a bad call by the ref. The skaters are allowed to put a hand (or both depending on position) on another skater to let their presence be known and to try and avoid a spill. It was clear that he was doing this since he was taking the inside lane and had position. He was trying to let the other skater know his presence so he would not get run out of bounds. I have watched a few other races in these Olympics and have seen far more contact go unpunished.

Granted I know most of us are bias to the USA, but being that the rules seem so speculative it's worth pointing out the Canadian who took gold had his hand on the Korean who was in 1st at that time and then took a spill, but that never seemed to be looked @ or discussed? Granted he didn't maintain contact with the Korean as much as Ohno did with the 2nd Canadian, but with only (4) skaters in the final and with the 2nd Canadian being in 3rd rounding the last corner, why not take a fall to ensure yourself the bronze with the ref being for the home team, it's a can't lose situation.

That's all you ask from refs at any level. This wasn't it. Ohno puts a hand on a Canadian, the Canadian takes a dive, DQ. The Canadian puts a hand on the Korean, the Korean takes a dive, Gold Medal. With a Canadian judge.
I had a bigger problem with the other race, vs. the 2 Canadians and 2 Koreas, where Ohno had moved to second, he got shoved (worse than the shove Ohno put on the Canadian last night) by a Canadian...which killed his momentum and moved him back to 5, and he had to skate like wild to pass the 2 Canadians again to get bronze, rather than a better medal. And because he didn't flop on his ass and make a scene, they didn't DQ anyone.
Some of this Canadian nonsense is continuing to mar the games, which have been pretty much a mess.

Yes, you are biased. The Canadian who won didn't touch the Korean and anyone with a dvr and the ability to watch replay can see this clearly. Three judges (not just some random Canadian) confirmed what was clear...Ohno, trailing badly and clearly outclassed pushed because he couldn't do anything else.

The Olympic committee yanked it, because they're too big of pussies to show yet another way Canada has screwed up these Olympics, from dangerous tracks to horrible surfaces...heck, couldn't even "get it up" for the torch, but the video was up:

That's ALL you do. Because anyone who's not front running folds like a house of cards in a hurricane. ("Own the Podium" - you do know there's more than one spot on it, don't you?) Feel better about your country now that speed skating has ended your national embarassment and you have something other than hockey to talk trash about? Of course, it should be at least one less medal after last night...either the gold or the bronze had to go, you can't justify both.

Gold today in curling, snowboarding, speedskating...they like to spread them around a bit. My little nation of 33 million with 13 gold now; compared to Salt Lake City (US 10 gold) and a slightly greater population (about 9x) you'd think you could find some winter athletes. Of course, per capita Norway kills us (and you guys) for medals, but that's another topic.
Your delusions about the Ohno decision remain pretty funny. Well, good luck in the gold medal game for hockey.

Those guys have to make high stakes rulings on borderline situations. I can't believe the federation allows refs to rule on situations involving fellow countrymen. Making that simple change would at least remove the appearance of a conflict of interest.
They could also use a panel of three refs. Two of them would have to agree to DQ a racer.

Did you not see the race where the Korean teammates took each other out allowing Ohno to move from 4th to 2nd? Seems more lucky to me. You can tell by his reaction that he knew the DQ was coming. It was obvious he gave the Canadian a little push on the hip.

I know there have been studies done about bias while viewing sports, but do the people upset about the DQ really not understand that he pushed him out of the way?! I am american and a huge Ohno fan. With that said,Ohno definitely deserved the DQ. There was a push that caused the Canadian to trip. Even if it was a slight push, with the speed they are skating and angle of the turns, all it takes is a slight push to the hip.

Should he have been DQ'd too, by your understanding? How about the race where the Canadian pushed Ohno harder, and he dropped from 2nd to 5th, but skated back to 4th? Should he have been DQ'd too? Because if falling is the reason for DQing, A. it should be consistent and B. we're going to get a LOT of flopping.

Watch the replay, there was only one push, Ohno's. The Canadian didn't even make contact. By the rules of short track, that was an easy call to make with Ohno.
It seems a lot of people here are letting their nationalistic pride bias there view of the event.

I watched it, multiple times. I was calling on the second push before the tv guys were, when they were saying "the Korean just fell". Then they came back later and showed it again, freeze frame, and CIRCLED the push. It's plain on the video. Not sure how you could miss it. (We are talking about the Gold Medal Canadian pushing the Korean, and not the Canadian pushing Ohno? Because the latter did not happen).
And what about the other race, that you ignored?
But really guys, I obviously think Wolverine318 is wrong...but who negs a guy with -97911 for THIS opinion? He's got to fly off the handle a lot more for that...you're defeating the cause...

I am talking about the other push with gold medal Canadian. I didn't see push with him, but I did with Ohno. Ohno had a clear push, no matter how biased one is, and I am very USA biased.

Re-watch the race, and judge for yourself. To me it looks like Ohno puts his hand up, but it blocks, not pushes. You can see when the Canadian's body flops away, the hands isn't extending in a push. Then watch the gold medal winner do a swim move with his arm to get in front of the Korean, and it DOES continuing following through after the Korean falls.
Neither was much contact, and I don't really have a problem with the Canadian winning. I have a problem with consistency. If what Ohno did was a DQ, then what the winner did was a DQ; or neither was a DQ. All very selective.

You can see the Canadian push Ohno at LEAST as much as Ohno pushed anyone, knocking Ohno out if second, to 5th, and making him rally to get the bronze. Let there weren't even any symbolic DQ's.

Weren't you the same guys who were lecturing me on how great "Mr. Minus 2" Alex Ovechkin was and how he and his team of all stars were going to destroy the greatest hockey nation on earth? The Canadians had their motivations for that game and I am sure they will be equally motivated for tomorrow. The physical forecheck evident against Germany, Russia and Slovakia was not evident in any of the prelims; that should prove the difference against the small but fast American team. Maybe the goalie can save them again.
I have every reason to be confident.
