OT: Old Programs and Media Guides

Submitted by sundaybluedysunday on
I recently got a box of old materials from my father-in-law and got around to going through it today. It turns out it's a box of old football game programs and media guides (as well as one media guide from the basketball team), and some are from very important games and seasons. We're talking Bo's first game as a head coach, 1971 Michigan-Ohio State, 1998 Rose Bowl, etc. I'm obviously pretty excited just to have them, but I know next to nothing about how rare and/or valuable these are. So I guess I have a couple of questions that I'm hoping some people on here might be able to help me out with. 1. Is there a market for these? If so, where do people buy and sell. I'm not saying I would sell all or even some of these, but it would be nice to know. 2. What kind of prices would these things go for? Any other information would be appreciated as well, and thanks in advance!

I know my dad has been collecting them for years so I asked him how many he has. He said "been a season ticket holder since 1974.starting around appxomaitey 1975 I started saving them. I have most of them but missing about 10 - 15. Went 22 years not missing a home game. I want ro give you and matt and gab.. you need to keep them away from being wet or damp places." Pretty neat he has all those.

Media guide/ program open thread?
I have a media guide from 1995 with Woodson's autograph on his freshman profile.
Other cool items out there? Sounds like OP has a bunch of great memorabilia.

Yeah, it's pretty incredible. What I listed above is a small fraction of it too. There are lots of Ohio State, Michigan State, Notre Dame and others. Most in great shape, maybe 25-30 in all. And then maybe 7-8 media guides. It's quite the haul.

You could give some to Pizza House. They might give you some money for it. I know they hang programs throughout the restaurant. The M Den might also be open to reselling them. You might not get as much money, but, if they go to Pizza House, a lot of people will appreciate them. I really like looking at the programs when I go there.

about 95% of my Michigan programs throughout the years, except for those that got so waterlogged during rainy weather that they weren't worth keeping.   My oldest one is from the 1976 season, one year before I first had season tickets.  I'm also missing a few from 1977-1979, but my collection from 1980 on is only missing ones from rainy days or the few games I didn't attend (mostly a small handful of games skipped when my kids were very young).

They're something I'll probably never part with, but I have no idea what they're worth, especially a few that were kept despite being in relatively bad shape.

I just got the Citrus Bowl program in the mail. Not memorabilia now, but in 40 years it'll be looked at as Harbaugh's first bowl game at Michigan. I think Harbaugh will become the Bear Bryant of the 21st century.

There is definitely a market for them. My recommendation is to search eBay completed auctions. It will give you an idea of value. Take into account that like all collectibles, condition is everything.

My sister got me a Michigan-Wisconsin program from the 100 year anniversary year of 1979 to add to my collection.  I don't know however, what she paid for it as it was a birthday gift.

Sorry to say but I checked and what you have is completely and utterly worthless.  In the spirity of preservation, however, I would be happy to take these completely worthless and surely unwanted items off your hands, free of charge I might add, and will dispose of them properly so they are recycled and repurposed as scrap.  Give me your email address and I'll send you instructions on where to ship this worthless crap you're now in possession of.

No need to thank me.  Glad to help.

Each individual program I've seen goes for $8-15. The exception being a 1934 M-OSU program. You could have a lot of value in that collection.

I'd be interested. Depends on the game though. I got a schembechler autograph a few months ago, then bought a engraved name plate, then got the schembechler sports illustrated (without the original mailing address). My goal is to frame all the pieces together. Wouldn't mind adding his first program to the frame.

My favorite stuff to collect are REAL old Michigan pennants. I have around 10 from the 60's and earlier. I have a few from 60's bowl games. My earliest is one from the 20's...totally felt, stitched with string(pennants nowadays use clear fishing line type stuff), also has three sets of attached tassels. Very rare. One has a leather Michigan crest sown on with felt lettering. Probably from the 20's. Again, real rare. If anyone has OLD pennants, especially of UofM, Tigers, Lions, or Wings...let me know. I'll buy them.

I wish I'd kept more of the ones I had accumulated through the years - definitely kept ones that had autographs or were from particularly memorable games, so basically very select highlights from the last 25 years or so of Michigan football. My parents have some in storage from before then - my mother even kept a few from her time as a student in the 1960s.

It would be cool to see photos of what you have though!

There actually was a really cool Michigan sports memorabilia store on Liberty St. in Ann Arbor, but it just closed a couple of months ago.  It was a shame.  They had a ton of awesome stuff and I think they would also buy memorabilia.  I think the owner can be contacted but I don't have his info.

I have an original program from every bowl game Michigan has ever played, starting with the 1948 Rose Bowl to last week's Citrus Bowl.  Post 1975, most of them were obtained in person at the game.  The only bowl game I don't have is the 1902 Rose Bowl.  The last program I saw for that game went for over $20,000 in a Leland's auction about ten years ago.

As someone else replied, they are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them.  There are a ton of Michigan programs out there.

I would just pick a couple of them - either based on opponent, significance of win, or just really like the cover/art. Take them somewhere and get them nicely framed.

For the others, just sell them on eBay. Unless they are 69' game or the first game in the big house, don't see how the value moves much in the future.

I too have seen them around $8-15 online.

You should scan them all so that we can all see them. That sounds really cool. I got a bunch of newspapers with famous headlines from my grandma last year and it was intriguing going through them all.

I pulled out a few to page through during the holidays.  A few interesting things I found in my 1984 UM/Washington game program besides the Harbaugh photos, was Jim Mora jr. was an assistant coach for Washington and looked really young.

In the 1989 UM/OSU game program there was a picture of DB Mark "Bo" Pellini in it on OSU's roster. It is kind of fun seeing how some of the past players are now coaches or still in football in some realm.

If you don't want them, you should be able to post them on this site, and whatever you sell them for, a percentage should go to Brian/MGoBlog as a 'middleman' fee

I like to collect the program inserts from basketball games but haven't been able to go to many this season.

Anyone willing to buy/mail them for me if I reimburse? I'd be willing to pay a little extra as a thank you!
