OT: Oklahoma QB Steve Davis dies in Indiana plane crash (1976 Orange Bowl)

Submitted by markusr2007 on

I read about this plane crash near South Bend earlier, but they announced the names of the dead and injured today.

Sadly, one of the dead passengers was Steve Davis, star wishbone quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners 1975 team that played Michigan in the 1976 Orange Bowl.  Davis also performed sideline reporting for ABC college football, including one with Bo Schembechler (don't remember the game) as the teams went in before half-time.

You can catch the full footage of the 1976 Orange Bowl on youtube, a game famous Michigan's all-white uniforms. Oklahoma won the game 14-6.

Condolences to Mr. Davis' family and OU.  I'm sure a little No. 5 may be on the Sooners' helmets this fall.

I saw the news report today...sad that anyone has to die, let alone someone who was undoubtedly a childhood hero for someone who was a college football fan.

Prayers to the family of Steve Davis.

I saw this on twitter.  Thoughts go out to friends and family.  Not that one human life is worth more than another at all, but I did not expect it to be a historic football player.

Prayers to the afflicted and affected.

I send my condolences to his family and Oklahoma fans.  Watching the 1976 Orange Bowl is one of my early memories as a Michigan fan when I was in high school.  Michigan played one of the best college defenses of all time.  I still remember listening to Bob Ufer calling the game.  RIP Steve Davis.

I was listening to a sports radio station here in Oklahoma and they were talking about it, including that one of the things Davis was most proud of was working himself up to the starting QB position, since when he joined the Sooners he was eighth on the depth chart.
